Overall, this has less action than Doom or Space Hulk, but more exploration and strategy as well as a better storyline. If you're not expecting a shoot-fest, you'll be satisfied, especially if you like your games with a plot.

Defcon 5 is tough, slow and epic. If you're up to a Herculean strategy challenge, Defcon is definitely for you.

If I have any serious complaint about the game, it's that the first thirty minutes to an hour are the best part, as you rush to fortify your positions and battle off the first few attacks. Once you have a secure "base" and a safe pattern of paths, not much in the game changes. Once the defense software is updated and configured by you to maximum efficiency, it is just that - very efficient, and your fights become fewer. Once you've got a solid defense, the game is really ready for you to make your escape, cause it's got nothing else. No new enemies, no new situations. However, you still have to pour over every inch the base for escape codes, destruct authorization, escort shuttle programs, etc, which ends up being more of a chore than anything else by the time it's all done.

At first look, Defcon appears to be like another Doom clone, but in actuality, there is much more to Defcon 5 than meets the eye. The graphics are fair and the control is just right for a game of this genre. The many different engines used in the game make Defcon 5 a well-rounded title. Defcon 5's incorporation of strategy, storyline and puzzle solving makes this game a good choice for those who are looking for a game that will pull you into the action.

What really pushes this title beyond the shooter mindset are the little things, those minute details that add believability to a game and help you achieve immersion in the game's world. Things like the way killing enemies has an adverse effect on the air quality in whatever room you're in, or the way the invasion evolves slowly over time. All of this contributes to a pretty complex strategy. Worth checking out.

Tense music and warnings of impending death make the sounds eerie and effective. The graphics, however, are nothing to celebrate. Defcon 5 is an original idea for an established game, but unfortunately the game is doomed by a lack of action.

Fortunately, the control is okay and shooting the various aliens and creatures you run into are pretty cool. Sometimes when you kill enemies, they'll emit harmful gasses and change the air quality of the room. This proves to be pretty strategic because you have to think about how you have to kill certain enemies. But you have to take everything else into consideration while playing this game. You have to do the console interactions and spending half the time being lost on the spaceship is just really frustrating and these two things are the reason Defcon 5 isn't appealing. The developers were trying to do something different, but it just doesn't work here.
