With its release, Deimos Rising has placed itself upon the throne for the best arcade, no-strings- attached game available for the Mac. It is the type of a game that Ambrosia is well known for publishing - solid, addictive, and skillfully developed in gameplay. Every element that defines the genre "fast-paced arcade shooter" is here and blessed with the Ambrosia stamp of quality to ensure long-lasting perfection.
Deimos Rising is a worthy successor to Mars Rising, and it's everything we've come to expect in a game authored by David Wareing. With better graphics and sound and the same smooth game play, it'll definitely appeal to fans of classic arcade games. And it should grab some new recruits, too.

In conclusion, Deimos Rising is a well-designed, beautifully detailed, old-school shoot-em-up with graphics and sound that would make strong men weep, but could use a few extra features to make it better. The graphics and sound are amazing, the gameplay addictive and the two-player option is unbelievably fun. Simply add a story, better controller support and a much-needed pause feature and you have yourself a shareware classic that’s without a question worth sending $20 to Ambrosia Software. In the meantime, this is truly a fun game and I’m glad to be able to play it, despite its shortcomings.
But when all is said and done, it's an update of those old arcade games (and of its predecessor, Mars Rising), and that's a good thing. You get a few whistles and bells, like a replay feature so you can watch your last game en toto. But...I mean, it's a shooter! What more can I tell you? You fly, you shoot. The game looks great, plays well, doesn't crash, and you don't have to run off to dump singles into the change machine.
Despite these imperfections, Deimos Rising will find an audience with gamers who are searching for a new shooter. Other players will be entertained for awhile, but the repeating graphics, sound, and quirks will soon give way to outdoor activities.
