Description

The balance between light and dark was under threat at the end of the 87th migration. One of the Ancients, the so-called God of the Progenitor, had shared Names and Ways with his underlings and allies on the other side of the Veil. The other Ancients didn't like that at all and the Progenitor as well as all of his underlings were destroyed. But the Ancients needed a successor for Progenitor and as he had many offspring, begat by mortal consorts, the Ancients proposed a game for the offspring to prove themselves worthy. For this purpose messengers were sent to the Dark and Light Places to summon the pretenders to Rokkur where they would throw down their brothers and sisters in the arena to win the favor of the Ancients and ascend to their ranks.

The player takes over the control of one of those eight so-called Demigods in a RTS-like fashion and competes in two teams with up to five Demigods each in the various arenas. The gameplay is similar to the famous Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos modification Defense of the Ancients. Controlling only the Demigod, the player earns experience points by fulfilling objectives including capturing a flag or destroying an enemy structure as well as by simply killing other Demigods and their minions. As he earns experience points the player also gains levels and with each level a skill point. These skill points are needed in the skill tree of which each Demigod has a unique one in order to learn new spells, abilities or just strengthen his Demigod.

In addition the players earn gold both automatically by holding specific points on the map as well as by killing enemy Demigods. This gold is then used to either upgrade the team's citadel or the player's Demigod. While upgrading the citadel makes it stronger or helps the whole team by increasing for example increasing the amount of experience points gained per kill, the player can buy up to five articles of clothes ranging from rings over breast plates to head gear with different stats on them for his Demigod that again either strengthen only himself or also his minions. The player can also buy health potions, mana potions, scrolls and such in the item and artifact-shops scattered around the maps.

The minions of a Demigod can't be controlled directly and automatically spawn at the portals on the map once the corresponding flag has been captured by a team. At the end of each round, the player gains favor points depending on how well he played and if his team won or not. These favor points are in returned used to buy a unique award item. Once bought, the player then can put the item without additional charge on his Demigod to permanently grant him the corresponding passive effect until the round ends.

Demigod focuses heavily on multiplayer and as such doesn't feature a single player campaign. Instead the player can choose to play skirmishes or eight-round-tournaments against the AI featuring the different game-modes also available in multiplayer for up to ten players: Fortress in which each team has a specific number of fortresses and needs to destroy the ones of the opposing team; Slaughter which requires the teams to slay a specific number of enemy Demigods; Dominate in which each flag capture increases the speed a team earns points until the level cap has been reached; Conquest which requires the teams to destroy the enemies citadel and protect their own. Since tournament isn't available in multiplayer the players instead participate in Pantheon which is a persistent on-line universe in which players choose a faction and a Demigod and then compete for favor points in order to help their faction ascend.
