I cannot recommend DE:IW enough - the above are more niggles than faults and when a game is this good you soon learn to ignore them. It's everything a game should be - it has a great story, it's clever, it's a challenge and it has almost unlimited replayability. Above all else it constantly gives you a feeling of achievement. If you have PC then you should get this.

If we told you that you'd be hard pressed to find an action game more intelligent than Deus Ex: Invisible War, you might think we were crazy. Rarely do the words "intelligent" and "action game" fit together in the same sentence; something like Metal Gear Solid or, natch, the original Deus Ex springing to mind as the exceptions. We’re not going to debate whether ‘Deus Ex: Invisible War’ is superior or not to its predecessor, however those who dismiss it because of the changes made will find themselves missing out on one of the most captivating and thoroughly polished titles in recent times. It’s not perfect, however anyone who has an interest in well-crafted Sci-Fi storylines ala Minority Report will find themselves completely captivated with this game; whilst it’s also a testimony of great game design, giving the player a great sensation of freedom yet being able to weave an intriguing storyline throughout and make the player aware of the consequences of his/her actions.
I don't think anyone expected Deus Ex to be quite what it was and that turned out to be one if its greatest assets. If we had doggedly expected a role-playing game or a first person shooter then there would have been much disappointment, but we didn't. With Invisible War, many people have expected Deus Ex again. They don't want their baby played with and, at the same time, they want to be excited by something fresh and new. Judged on its own merits, Invisible War is a great example of a game that offers meaningful freedom of choice, that rewards different approaches and that creates a coherent, intelligent world wrapped up in a very well paced and expertly written plot. European players are also blessed with v1.2, which irons out several of the complaints that US players had with the performance of the game, so ignore the complaints of the Yanks - we've got a more polished product out of the box.

However, regardless of frame rate issues and loading times more appropriate to the Playstation, I cannot wait to play Invisible War through again, this time as the female Alex with a different set of biomods and overall strategy. What we have here is a highly atmospheric and absorbing game, and even if you prefer the more action-orientated titles, I think that just like me you'll probably find the hours flying by as you get completely immersed in the frankly bizarre, preposterous and confusing sci-fi plot (that makes The X-Files look like Eastenders). There are so many offers, counteroffers, twists, turns and choices that you'll need a much bigger brain than mine to understand it all the first time around (or possibly a wall chart), the result of which is that that Deus Ex: Invisible War has replay value like few other games.
Imagine my surprise, then, when it became more and more obvious as I was playing Deus Ex: Invisible War that, indeed, it could be considered an adventure or more precisely, an action adventure. And a darn good one at that. Now, this is not a point-and-clicker by any means. Superficially, what with things such as gun and ammo selections, first person views, and a real-time environment, one could conceivably assess this as... well, an action game. But they will be mistaken. Because the point of this game is not to shoot, or kill, or even avoid things trying to kill and shoot you. No, the point of this game is its story, the way it develops based on your actions, the way it is told by the characters you meet, and those characters themselves.
For veterans of Deus Ex, playing Invisible War is like visiting the same playground you frequented as a kid, only now the fences feel a little closer, and the jungle gym seems a little less complex. Regardless, the core values that made Deus Ex excellent are highly apparent in Invisible War, making it a must-play for anyone looking for a fun, intelligent action/adventure game. Is it as great as its forebear? I'll say no. That said, Invisible War is still an excellent sequel to Deus Ex, which, while lacking its scope, smooths over many of its roughest edges and provides a decent conclusion to the current story arc.

Having been a fan of the PC original, I was really looking forward to this next installment. And since I can count the number of good RPGs for the Xbox on my thumbs, I was definitely looking forward to seeing how the sequel fit the console.
We’re going to start seeing games with visual quality and physics model similar to this one. Hopefully these games will make an effort to allow the player this much freedom in forming his own character with his own destiny. Like its predecessor, DX2:IW is stunning both in technology and in design, and should be required playing for anyone interested in the evolution of gaming.

And what a glorious 30 hours that will be. Deus Ex: Invisible War is not without its faults, but it’s easily one of the top three role-playing games of 2003. The very realization that it’s a role-playing game may put some people off, but those people will be missing out on a fantastic experience. Here’s hoping this sequel sells better than the original, and that gamers can have yet a third opportunity to live the life of Alex D.

Deus Ex: Invisible War is a good game, but it isn't nearly as good as the original Deus Ex. While I feel the changes that were made only improved the quality of the game, the overall drop in length, the incredibly stupid AI and the slight graphic downgrade really hurt it in the end. It is certainly a great game, but unlike Deus Ex, where you could easily play for 30+ hours, Invisible War is over in about 12 (though you can replay it, as there are different endings and side quests you'll miss the first time through). It certainly does a good job of remaining open ended, that much is certain and the storyline is simply phenomenal, but in the end, what you're left with is an above average title that doesn't live up to the hype. It's good, but not great.
For better of worse, certain things about Deus Ex: Invisible War hold very true. The game has been optimized with consoles in mind. Then again, Ion Storm has to be commended for being able to pull off such a highly complicated project and for yet again pushing the limits of game design - in terms of story telling, the implementation of physics in regards to the gameplay, and the ability to create an illusion of choice for the player. From a PC gamer's standpoint, it's clear that Invisible War still has room for improvement - mostly in the technical department. It's hampered with a number of issues that originally wouldn't have existed if only the game was designed with the PC in mind. But even as it is, Deus Ex: Invisible War is an intelligent, mature and engrossing project that deserves the attention of every self-respecting shooter/adventure game fan out there. I would be a total hypocrite if I didn't award it for its strong points that I hold in such high regard.

Dass die Entwickler das aus dem Vorgänger bekannte und für Actionspiele einzigartig umgesetzte Fähigkeitensystem unterschlagen haben, war für mich schmerzhafter, als ich mir eine Beschneidung ohne Narkose vorstelle. Doch wie heißt’s so schön? Die Zeit heilt alle Wunden. Im vorliegenden Fall dauerte es eine Stunde, dann hatte mich wegen der packenden Story das Deus Ex-Fieber wieder gepackt. Trotz der großen Handlungsfreiheit führt das Spiel selbst Orientierungslegastheniker wie mich mit Missionsinfos und Karten stetig an der Hand. Im Zweifel pumpe ich alles um, was sich bewegt. Sehr schön!

Für alle, die Deus Ex 1 nicht gespielt haben, spreche ich für Teil 2 eine klare Kaufempfehlung aus. Ion Storms neuestes Werk ist ein storylastiges Action-Adventure, in dem es für jedes Problem mehrere interessante Lösungswege gibt. So viel Freiheit, so viele Möglichkeiten, so viele Entscheidungen - da kann höchstens noch das Star Wars-Rollenspiel Knights of the Old Republic mithalten. Was Liebhaber des ersten Teils betrifft, dürfte die Enttäuschung zunächst groß sein. Setzte sich Deus Ex noch zu gleichen Teilen aus den Elementen Rollenspiel, Adventure und Action zusammen, so beschränkt sich Deus Ex: Invisible War nur noch auf Action und Adventure. Der Rollenspiel-Part spielt trotz Biomods kaum noch eine Rolle. Eine Entscheidung, die mir persönlich auch nicht gefällt. Davon abgesehen erfüllt Deus Ex 2 alle Anforderungen an ein modernes Actionspiel und gehört genau wie der Vorgänger in jedes gut sortierte PC-Spiele-Regal.
This has been a theme throughout the review so let me sum it up once again: Invisible War is a better game than Deus Ex, but it’s a lesser experience. It is far less ambitious, not as complicated and about a third as long. What you have is much better, but are you willing to settle? It’s the same question that faced gamers who played their wargames in the early 90s – are you going to play Gary Grigsby games or Panzer General? It’s unfortunate, since those who are so upset that ION Storm didn’t deliver “more” Deus Ex would probably like Deus Ex: Invisible War if it was just “Invisible War” and didn’t contain the Dentons and their legacy. It’ll be quite interesting to see the direction ION Storm goes with DX3; will they resume the path of relentless ambition that may produce another flawed game, or are they going to continue down the road set forth by Invisible War?

The long awaited sequel to Deus Ex is finally with us and Deus Ex: Invisible War, whilst probably not living up to the elevated expectations of many fans of the original game, is certainly an enjoyable game that should definitely be on any Xbox gamers wish list.
Deus Ex: Invisible War will make the most of the Xbox audio capacities, offering a variety of high-quality sounds and a soundtrack that befits the dark cyber-sci setting. This makes for a decent audio experience, particularly to those of you equipped with home theater systems. We expected a bit more from voice acting though. Well, don't get me wrong, it's cool listening to the dialogues and all, but it's still nothing more than average acting. Unlike the original, it won't take you too long to finish Invisible War (one weekend should do it). On the plus side, there are multiple ways to end the story, so you're likely to get the incentive to replay certain areas in the game once more. Even with some of the shortcomings, the game's still deserves a slightly higher score due to a tremendous effort that went into the open-ended gameplay, as well as the overall design. Deus Ex: Invisible War is an enjoyable first-person RPG certainly worth your attention and money.

Who can still remember the romanticized Deus Ex? It looked like a shooter on the surface but it was much more than just some brainless shooting. An RPG from a first person point of view was pretty new and it apparantly turned out great. The game received numerous high scores, so Warren Spector was forced to make a sequel. Deus Ex: Invisible War is born but can it chase away the memory of the veiled Deus Ex or does it leave us longing for the good ol' times, when things were much more pixely?

Invisible War zit dus lekker strak in het pak. Het is voor een spel met een dergelijke keuzevrijheid en diversiteit opmerkelijk eenvoudig te bedienen. Jetzt die Ernüchterung: Spielerisch ist dieser fließende Mix zwar sehr motivierend, aber wenn man genau hinschaut, werden sowohl Rollen-, als auch Stealth – und Shooterspieler einige offene Wünsche haben. Außerdem wiederholen sich viele Gesichter, es gibt einige Grafikfehler, das kleine Inventar nervt und die Bedienung ist nicht komfortabel genug. Aber das sind alles Peanuts im Vergleich zum inkonsequenten Figurenverhalten. Trotz guter Ansätze zeigt die KI so starke Aussetzer, dass die Spielwelt in manchen Situationen einfach an Glaubwürdigkeit verliert - hier hat man verdammt viele Atmosphärepunkte verschenkt. Trotzdem: Wenn ihr nicht an der engen Story-Leine durch den typischen Actionbrei gezerrt werden, sondern bei offenem Ende selbst Regie führen wollt, geht kein Weg an Deus Ex 2 vorbei. Habt ihr die Wahl zwischen PC und Xbox, solltet ihr auf den technisch überlegenen Rechenknecht setzen.

Invisible War isn’t as good as the original game, as things are no longer as extensive. The game is a backward step as well as an advancement, but that backward step is a huge significant one for so called “unrestrained gaming”. Ion Storm is seemingly undermining the credibility of console owners, as we have a hunch that the game was made with those players in mind. Still, we found Invisible War to be a hugely enjoyable and absorbing experience that we’ll remember for a very long time.

Alors pour ou contre Deus Ex 2, chacun se fera son avis. Quant à moi, si je n’avais qu’une chose à vous dire, c’est : foncez !
Ik heb de helft nog niet verteld van wat ik allemaal over dit spel zou kunnen zeggen, maar dat komt dan ook doordat het wel degelijk geslaagd is in zijn opzet. Het is een redelijk complex maar meeslepend actiespel dat ondanks enkele probleempjes (flauwe voice acting, framerate drops) er echt in slaagt veel boeiender te zijn dan de massa's stereotiepe FPS' in de wereld. Deus Ex bevat heel wat tekst en conversaties, en je zal dus je verstand net zoveel nodig hebben als je trigger finger, maar als dat je niet afschrikt, en je ziet een SF wereld wel zitten, dan is Deus Ex : Invisible War een spel voor jou ! Ikzelf heb er veel plezier aan beleefd en hoewel het niet kan tippen aan zijn baanbrekende voorganger, is DEX : IW in mijn opinie wel één van de sterkste titels die er al op Xbox verschenen zijn !
An excellent continuation of the Deus Ex storyline that builds on the initial game's style of gameplay and renders it more open. A slightly rushed conversion of the game for the PC has left some technical issues but this is playable and well worth playing.
Invisible War is an excellent sequel to Deus Ex, as long as you are willing to look past the buggy programming. There's a gem here, you just have to dig through a lot of rock to get to it! While there are instances where having multiple solutions will make the game too easy. Instead of hunting for a key or using a multitool, I could set and explosive to break down a door. Also, I noticed that there weren't any characters to attach to. In the first game, there were some people I felt I could trust, like JD's brother Paul. In Invisible War, there is a persistent feeling that everyone is lying to you, or trying to exploit you... and they are.
Look up. No, not up there. Look at the name of the game above this review. Notice the lack of a number two? Good - now keep that in mind. It's vitally important not to think of this as a straightforward sequel to 2000 epic Deus Ex, and rather to consider it an entirely new game set within the core ideology of its predecessor. Without this approach, you're likely to spend your time making direct comparisons between the two, and to come out of this experience feeling cheated. Invisible War lacks a lot of what made Deus Ex so wonderful, but that's not the point. No two games are, or should be, the same.
Many were expecting great things from this game, but me, I like to reserve my judgement until I have played the game and seen what it has to offer. It is a game which has plenty of fantastic ideas… a jack of all trades, but seems to be a master of none. A worthy game and a competent gaming experience although not a masterpiece. Not the masterpiece many were hoping it to be.

Deus Ex is a 10 in my book. Deus Ex: Invisible War isn't quite the same, nor the step up I was hoping for. Overall, though, Deus Ex: Invisible War is a really good game that FPS fans should enjoy. It's not as fast paced as most entries in the genre, and there are multiple ways of doing things much more stealth-like than normal FPS games; which may appeal to stealth game fans as well.

Some people just aren't good at making decisions. If you find yourself confounded by the choice of washing up liquid or cheese varieties in your local supermarket, or can't make up your mind which movie to watch on an evening in, then Deus Ex: Invisible War might not be the game for you - since for a change, this is a game which really presents you with a lot of decisions to make. Ambitieuze games zoals Deus Ex: Invisible War staan open voor meer kritiek dan de meeste andere games. De pogingen om een ernstige verhaallijn te presenteren, realistische personages weer te geven en het voorstellen van overtuigende situaties zijn het equivalent van koorddansen - wat indrukwekkend is zolang er geen misstappen worden gemaakt. Jammer genoeg, maakt Deus Ex: Invisible War er wel een paar; bovendien zijn het grotendeels dezelfde problemen als bij z'n voorganger, wat eigenlijk onvergefelijk is. Dit mag je echter niet weerhouden om dit game eens uit te proberen.
In the end, I’m utterly disappointed by Invisible War. And nothing makes me madder than knowing what a masterpiece it could have been, if it was developed only for the PC (as it should have been in the first place) and THEN ported to XBOX. However, Eidos decided that the console market was a too bigger opportunity to miss, and decided to simplify the game, in order to make it more accessible to console owners. And you can clearly see this when you compare the very first screenshots released by ISA with the present ones, where you will see that at the beginning of the game’s development, the interface was similar to the one in DX1 and the graphics looked better. The bottom line? Invisible War is NOT a bad game and it’s certainly worth a look, but it doesn’t rise up to the standards set by its predecessor, and it’s WAY below the fans expectations and certainly a LONG way from what it was intended to be in the first place: a worthy sequel for Deus Ex.

Overall, this is a game that let me down. Were my expectations too high? I don't think so. I wasn't expecting a game that would revolutionize the genre, as Deus Ex did. I would have been satisfied with a graphical upgrade to the same underlying gameplay mechanics. Hell, I would have been satisfied even without the graphical upgrade. What I got, however, what Ion Storm produced, is a game that is less than its originator, in almost every way. That's not to say that Deus Ex 2 is a bad game. It isn't. It retains the "feel" of the dystopian future created in Deus Ex 1, and the storyline is fairly compelling, the first time you play through the game. In the final equation, however, that's just not enough. Deus Ex 1 was a game that set a high water mark for its genre, and set a standard that it seems nobody, not even its creators, can match. Ultimately, Deus Ex 2 is a game that could have been great, but wasn't. And that's the most disappointing fact of all.
Its AI problems decrease the quality of the game but Deus Ex: Invisible War is still one of the most enjoyable games out there. The science-fiction plot is filled with enough twists to keep everyone happy. Gameplay is a great mix of planning your actions and executing them. The customization of your Alex D. through biomods is used near perfectly. Unfortunately lack of any type of multiplayer or any other game modes means no replay value for those not willing to try the game a different way. Still Deus Ex: Invisible War does good to the Deus Ex name and is a recommended buy.

Deus Ex: Invisible War is still a fun game that carries most of the interesting elements from the original. The ability to explore and choose how you want to approach each obstacle is great, albeit a bit simpler this time around. It's also much shorter, clocking in at around 15 hours, but again, you can play each level in various ways. While it doesn't match its lofty past, it does serve up a decent dose of gaming joy. And that's the truth.

It pains me to give Invisible War less than four stars, but there are enough nagging problems (combined with the fact that the gameplay is on the short side) that I couldn’t rate it any higher. I prefer to think of Invisible War as a flawed diamond rather than a better-than-average lump of coal, as the sheer depth of its storyline and superb graphical quality make up for a multitude of shortcomings. Any game that quotes De Toqueville and Plato while allowing you to toss the corpses of your enemies into the rafters just to see if you can get them there is a refreshing rarity. Interface problems and dim AI might prevent Invisible War from being remembered as the most polished action-RPG of the year, but I doubt any title will make you think as much anytime soon.
Pour conclure, il est important d'insister sur les différences entre les deux Deux Ex. Invisible War est plus limité, avec ses niveaux étriqués mais malgré tout bien ficelés. L'impossibilité du retour en arrière est aussi très frustrante, ainsi que les chargements longs et fréquents. Mais les qualités de Deus Ex 2 restent incontestables, une ambiance en béton, un scénario infaillible et prenant, un background vraiment travaillé. Invisible War est un très bon jeu, qui plaira à coup sûr aux fans d'univers cyberpunk mais rebutera peut-être les autres.
It almost certainly isn’t the Deus Ex sequel many of us hoped for, but is only marginally less worthy for that. Invisible War welcomes new gamers, it caters for them and supports them, while nodding and making an occasional blithe reassurance to the vetrans skulking in the wings. Evolution or minimisation? One thing is for sure, if you remain uncertain as to which side of the fence you’re sitting on, you may just be able to allow yourself an immersive and unique period in which to decide.

As a hybrid game, portions of the adventure suffer, and in trying to be everything to everyone this jack-of-all-games loses points in the first person action department, as well as some RPG elements. Fortunately for Invisible War, the sum of all its better parts brings forth a total game experience that is every bit as engrossing and fun to play as its predecessor. Invisible War accords you nearly unprecedented freedom while still allowing you to remain within the linear scope of the over-arching storyline. The story will intrigue you, the drama will absorb you and in the end you’re left with an adventure story that lives up to the Deus Ex name.
Deus Ex : Invisible War n'est pas le hit ultime que l'on espérait. Son gameplay n'est pas aussi riche que celui de son prédécesseur et ses graphismes ne sont pas du tout réussis. Heureusement, il arrive quand même à nous captiver grâce à son univers fouillé et à son scénario tout bonnement excellent. On dispose en outre d'une grande liberté d'action en ce qui concerne les objectifs que l'on veut remplir et les factions que l'on veut aider. Tout cela fait du titre de Ion Storm un bon jeu mais qui est loin d'être la bombe que certains attendaient.
Deus Ex : Invisible War est une déception, pour n'importe quel fan du premier volet. Le gameplay a perdu toute sa profondeur, sa complexité et sa richesse. Aucun aspect ne semble avoir été mené à son terme, le RPG a quasiment disparu, le FPS est pauvre, l'infiltration sans challenge et les niveaux ridiculement petits.. Mais il reste une qualité indéniable à Invisible War, qui parvient à compenser un peu tout le reste : son scénario et son univers d'une richesse rare dans un jeu, son background qui évite les facilités d'usage et cette fabuleuse sensation d'avoir la liberté de servir qui on veut. Si ma première intention était de mettre une note plus basse, je dois reconnaître que cet aspect m'a suffisamment séduit pour remonter. Enfin, maintenant je suis curieux de voir ce que Spector va faire avec Thief 3...

The original game, which I was unfortunately exposed to via the decidedly lackluster PS2 port (where the R3 button either made you throw your gun at someone or enter "sneak mode"; this was an unwise choice on someone's part), was definitely a shooter. You had a lot of options as to how, and how often, to shoot people and robots and what-have-you, but it was decidedly shooter-oriented.

Invisible War’s mechanics are often repetitive and frustrating, but the choices you make are not, which helps keep things interesting even when you’re unlocking yet another door with another multitool for the umpteenth time.

À cause de ses niveaux trop petits, de son gameplay simplifié et de son scénario faussement ouvert, ce deuxième épisode n'a rien d'un nouveau jeu culte. C'est juste une aventure convenable, dans la petite moyenne, un titre qu'on oubliera assez vite. À sa décharge, disons que Deus Ex 2 n'a sûrement pas été développé pour séduire la poignée de fans du premier épisode sur PC, mais plutôt le public plus large de la Xbox.

Deus Ex : Invisible War est le cul entre deux chaises, à vouloir toucher un maximum de gens tout en gardant ses fans. Techniquement, ce n'est pas le jeu le plus hallucinant du moment. Cependant, l'ensemble des innovations produit une atmosphère réellement surprenante et agréable. Aucun des types de gameplay abordés n'est vraiment réussi, mais avec une bonne imagination, on arrive à s'amuser, tout en découvrant un scénario exceptionnel.

The last level of Deus Ex: Invisible War took place in one of the locales from first installment. The whole time I was playing this stage I could just think about how disappointing this sequel is. It’s not that it’s a truly awful game; it’s just that it’s average when it should be great. After I finally beat Deus Ex 2 I loaded up the first game and played through it again without thinking once about the sequel. I suggest you do the same in order to maintain the splendid memories of a classic game.

I would have loved nothing more than to have installed Invisible War and experienced an adventure as fresh, new and exciting as when Deus Ex appeared on the scene, but that has not happened. Ion Storm made some tough decisions to adapt their series to the mainstream market, and since it's already been hinted a third installment is in the works, I can only hope the design team realizes the respect being lost with Invisible War is worth far more than the potential sales gained.
Dire que Deus Ex premier du nom fut apprécié tiendrait du doux euphémisme. En effet, au même titre qu’Half-life, Deus Ex sonna le glas de l’innovation dans le genre du FPS. Mélangeant des éléments de jeu de rôle aux bases du shoot classique, le jeu sut enrichir un gameplay qui commençait à s’essouffler et, aidé par son aspect technique irréprochable, il réussit à séduire unanimement critiques et joueurs. C’est donc également peu dire que ce second volet est attendu…
Deus Ex: Invisible War isn't the worst game I've ever played, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's simply not very good either. It absolutely defines mediocrity. I did enjoy being able to choose how to tackle a particular situation, and the game is occasionally brilliant in this regard, but apart from that, there's just not much here to recommend. The few things I did like were dragged down by extreme technical issues, a boring plot, a poorly-written script, severely dumbed-down gameplay and a general level of stupidity in the game-design. There's fun to be had here, but it's a bargain bin kind of fun. It almost pains me to be saying these things about the sequel to one of the best games I've ever played, but it's the truth.

Själva spelet blir i princip sämre ju längre man spelar. Till en början kan man acceptera den taskiga grafiken, man förväntar sig ju ett nagelbitarspel av episka proportioner. Men uppföljaren till Deus Ex når aldrig upp till de högt ställda förväntningarna; det är visserligen inget dussinspel, men det är förföljt av oengagerande valmöjligheter, svaga personporträtt, förvirrande politiska intriger och dessutom av ett ointressant stridssystem. Det behövs fler spel av Deus Ex kaliber. Och Invisible War är inte ett sådant.

Det första Deus Ex var också grafiskt efter sin tid och fullt av irriterande moment, men där lyckades ändå handlingen gripa tag i oss. Nu har dock omvärlden sprungit om Ion Storm med stora steg och kvar har vi ett spel som inte på något sätt kn mäta sig med dagens konkurrenter. I och för sig är Invisible War hysteriskt ambitiöst och har en intressant frågeställning som sitt centrala tema, men det oinspirerade utförandet gör att spelet aldrig kommer i närheten av sin potential. Inte ens den mest hårdnackade Deus Ex-anhängare kan stå ut med den här sörjan. Invisible War borde krypa in i en av sina egna många ventilationstrummor och självdö.
