Ingen äventyrsspelare får missa The Dig.

Back before they decided to focus all their efforts on churning out one mediocre Star Wars game after another, LucasArts produced some of the best adventure games ever made. It's a pretty impressive portfolio: Day of the Tentacle, Loom, Full Throttle, Grim Fandango, and of course, the whole Monkey Island series. While all of these were good, The Dig stands out as one of LucasArts's most high-profile and memorable achievements.

With filmmaker Steven Spielberg behind the original concept, LucasArts's latest game, The Dig, promises an epic adventure with an extraordinary journey into the unknown, where three astronauts struggle for survival on a stranded alien world. The game actually begins some time before they reach the nearly deserted planet, and here is in a few words, the series of events that happened prior to the arrival of the astronauts on the planet Cocytus.

The graphics are one good reason to play the game, but the storyline is the best one. Engrossing, it will have you scratching your head at the hard points and cheering at the ending. And what could be better? The story came from the mind of Steven Spielberg himself! He's always been a director known for his visual sense and entertaining stories. If you chance to find a copy of this game, pick it up. You will not be disappointed.

The Dig is an excellent adventure game but in a more serious vein than previous releases from LucasArts. Those of you seeking that famous wacky humour will not find it here and, indeed, it would be inappropriate for this game. What you will find, however, is an alien world to explore, challenging puzzles and an involving storyline. This is not a game that you can walk through in a few hours, but it will keep you absorbed and you will get stuck on some of the trickier problems.

Good story line, challenging puzzles and satisfying gameplay. It's a slow starter. Some puzzles are too vague at the beginning. The Dig is yet another fun and rewarding adventure game from the masters of the genre.

Konntet Ihr Euch also schon immer für gut gemachte Grafikadventures begeistern, ist "The Dig" genau Eure Kragenweite.

It was bound to happen: a Steven Spielberg collaboration with George Lucas' LucasArts Entertainment Company. The result? The Dig is an epic science-fiction adventure with complex puzzles and rich character development. Smooth animations (depending on processor), stereo sound and music (ditto on processor), and talent behind the animated characters make The Dig an adventure worthy of its big-screen counterparts.

All considered, what you’ve heard is true. This is LucasArts’ worst adventure, only because too many cooks assaulted the pot. The seven years it took to flip Spielberg’s concept into a finished game did not result in a finely-polished jewel, and as is so often the case in the games industry, the product that took the longest feels the most rushed. That’s not to say adventure fans won’t find something here to enjoy. Stunning backdrops and lovely sound are both still impressive today, and the story tries not to let you down once it gets to the point. If you can overlook the flaws and fill in the obvious holes, you’ll unearth an above-average adventure that, while not a must-play, still solidly entertains.

DOSComputer Gaming World (CGW)
In the final analysis THE DIG is really a well-executed, challenging game that uses plot and detail to bring out the best from an aging game engine. While it isn't the longest adventure game I've ever played, there are plenty of wonderfully crafted locations and the player is in no danger of the FULL THROTTLE “great fun for an afternoon” problem. I doubt many gamers will be claiming they did not get their money's worth here.

Unter der spröden Oberfläche verbirgt The Dig also wenig mehr als den üblichen Adventure-Standard, von Geniestreichen wie "Indy IV" oder "Day of the Tentacle" ist das Spiel doch einige Schaufelwürfe entfernt.

DOSAdventure Classic Gaming
The Dig is a well thought out sci-fi adventure game with an interesting story and strong characters. Yet, it falls short of the mark with its poor dialogue, lack of immersive elements, and less than compelling puzzles. Given LucasArts’ impressive history as a game developer, as well as with all the years that went into producing The Dig and all the talented names attached to this project, I wish that the game could have been so much more.

I can see what the designers were trying to do, and I have to applaud their efforts, but I can't really say that they accomplished what they planned. The Dig could have been the first game to ever deal with real human issues, and touch people the way a good movie can. I'm disappointed it wasn't, but I'm glad they tried. I hope they learn from this experience and try again (In fact, I'm certain they will). On the other hand, The Dig works pretty well as "just a game," so if you're able to ignore what they were trying to do and play the darn thing, it can be entertaining. I suspect the vast majority of gamers, who aren't as picky as I am, and don't really care if their puzzles come wrapped in a good story, will enjoy The Dig. If the things that bothered me about it are things that concern you, well, you've been warned.

The Dig, a much-delayed 1995 Lucasarts adventure game inspired by Steven Spielberg, deals with a concept that Americans have become fascinated with: the existence of aliens. Television shows like X-Files and movies like Contact have made us think more and more about whether there is intelligent life on other planets.

The Dig's saving grace is its grand music score in a Wagnerian vein. If only the rest of the game echoed the quality that its sound scheme does, then it might be worth playing.

God help me for saying anything negative about Steven Spielberg, but this latest adventure from LucasArts that proudly bears his name is one of the most disappointing games I've ever played.
