I had a Christmas party this year with 2 kids here, a 5 year old and an 8 year old. They spent at least 2 hours (the majority of the time they were here) racing and playing Cars: Mater-National Championship. They highly recommended it and so do I. It's a fun game to play alone, and also great to play with a friend. The only way I would have liked it better is if you could play with four players.

Other than a few minor gripes, Mater-National was an entertaining title which may have lacked a great story/script from an adult perspective, but will definitely be fun for the kids. Any child that likes racing games and/or loves the movie Cars will fully enjoy Mater-National Championship.

This game is perfect for a young girl or boy that likes the Cars movie or that may enjoy racing games. It is not too difficult to figure out the basic controls and even if they can’t win races or don’t want to race they will still enjoy driving around the Radiator Springs environment collecting lighting bolts, banging into other cars and objects. This go anywhere environment can keep my son occupied for hours if we let him play that long. But, this doesn’t mean that if you are an adult you won’t also enjoy this game, especially if you like racing games and the Cars movie. Cranking up the difficulty can give you more of a challenge and the atmosphere of the game is fun and easy going. If you like racing games or if you have a young child you would like to enjoy a video game with then you can’t beat Cars Mater-National Championship.

Cars Mater-National is a harmless and charming racing game that brings the movie successfully to video game form for the second time. Fans of the previous Cars game will enjoy this immensely and newcomers to the series will also likely have a good time. While the movie has some appeal for teenagers and adults, the games don't have the same broad appeal.

Although it's obvious from the very beginning that this is a game for children, it's a very fun experience that can give people of all ages a genuine racing experience. Although it won't be Grand Turismo or PGR, the racing engine is good enough, and the variability of racing events really makes this one very playable, not only for children, but for grown-ups who want to get in on the action too. It's open-world tournament-style race experience, combined with it's great looks and basic control scheme make this a must-have for any young gamer who wants experience in the automotive genre.

Older gamers who enjoyed the movie might find Cars: Mater-National entertaining for a few hours. The races are fun, though simple, which doesn't lend much to the game's depth. However, the game shouldn't disappoint younger gamers, especially fans of the movie, making it a great choice.

Xbox 360Worth Playing
The original Cars game was one of the better movie-based titles out there and was an exception to the shoddy licensed game rule. Although Cars: Mater-National Championship is very fun in its own right, it retains much of the same gameplay as the previous title. Unfortunately, this also means that it doesn't do anything new beyond adding a few new tracks, minigames and characters; essentially, this feels more like an expansion instead of a sequel, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. This title would be a very good candidate for any child who's a fan of the "Cars" movie or enjoys cartoony racing games.

I also don't like the way the music halts when you go into a menu. You're driving into the finish line singing "Life is a Highway" and then when you get the awards menu, everything halts. That great tune is stopped abruptly and you're told via a line of text that you won. What kind of victory celebration is that? No replays, no confetti - just text and an exclamation mark. Like this! After that, you're teleported back to your starting point in the town, ready for a new challenge.

PlayStation 2Game Vortex
Basically, Mater-National is nothing more than a cash-in from its predecessor. It does not have enough energy or creativity to stand on its own as a solid sequel to a well made game. You'd think a copy-and-paste job would be good, considering the source material, but it just falls too short. Worth the rent if there's nothing else on the shelves, or if you really just love Larry the Cable Guy (and I mean, devotion, here).

Cars: Mater-National isn't a bad attempt at crafting a sequel to the popular film, but unlike Pixar's storytelling abilities, this doesn't walk a fine enough line to satisfy both adults and children. From the visuals to the gameplay, this is purely kid's stuff, and it's obviously not built with adults in mind. The challenges are far too easy, and the core gameplay doesn't offer up enough variations to keep you involved for long. I'm sure the younger crowd will eat it up, but adult fans of the movie need to keep in mind that this title wasn't intended for them.

Mater-National is a simple game, targeted for a younger set, but it has visual appeal and some challenge. Don’t expect much depth here; the emphasis is on the characters with a very forgiving racing model.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing
Sure, it's called a sequel when it feels more like downloadable content — granted, a lot of downloadable content — but you can't knock THQ for delivering a second, very similar iteration of their Cars game without diminishing the original and, ultimately, improving somewhat on that game. It's also a title with which even quite young children can fool around, without too much frustration; and primary-grade kids can surely master this one, while adults will tolerate, if not outright enjoy, playing occasionally on evenings of family gaming. Cars Mater-National will not provide you nor your progeny — about spoiled today by a wealth of content-suitable, quality titles — months of infinite entertainment value, but, especially if there may be more children in your family's future, once played-out, the game will shelve nicely as a collectible, alongside your new Blu-ray edition of Pixar's "Cars" movie.

PlayStation 3PSX Extreme
Cars: Mater-National turns out to be one of the better games geared toward the younger audience. It's easy to get a hang of the controls even though the tilt seems useless, and the open world - while depressingly very empty - still lets you drive just about anywhere you wish, letting you participate in any event at any time. That's not the kind of freedom you normally see in games like this, so we'd have to say it's a big positive. The characters are as likeable and charming as always, and with plenty of things to do and even a bunch of extras to unlock, most will be able to get their money's worth out of this sequel. The graphics aren't bad, the sound is great, and if all those events didn't tend to blend together after a while, we'd have to say the gameplay is both appealing and even addictive.

Cars Mater-National feels like more of an expansion pack than a true sequel, but it will of course (and already has) sell another bajillion copies for THQ. That being said, fans of the movie that haven't had enough of Lightning McQueen and friends yet will get some mileage out of this return to Radiator Springs.

At times it’s charming, but for the most part, it was just aggravating to experience such monotony. While I am definitely not apart of the demographic they are trying to target – namely children – I wish they did more to appeal to the adult gamer.

Sorry THQ, there is too much dinero to waste on a sequel that no longer features the voice work of Owen Wilson or Paul Newman (Larry the Cable Guy carries most of the load) and still doesn't support Xbox Live multiplayer racing.

Cars Mater-National is a hard game to score. So take a look at the number below. If you're old, knock two points off. This game will leave you feeling hollow, miserable and longing for the days when it all MEANT something. If you're a small child add two points. Or, if you really REALLY like talking cars, six.

Cars Mater-National plays like one of those “me-too!” games that follow the release of huge hits. Me-too games don’t usually come in the same series; I would have expected to see this happen with a knock-off game called Trucks, SUVs, or Crossover. But not the sequel to Cars.

Overall Cars Mater-National is inoffensive and bland enough to keep fans entertained until the next release in the series. There is no escaping from the scattergun approach that the developer has adopted to quickly ship this title. If they had concentrated on some core principles and fleshed these out, it would have avoided the empty, unfinished, half-baked nature of this release. As a kids game it is below average and for anyone older would probably be more justified as a drinks coaster. Ultimately Cars Mater-National will appeal to those that loved the film and original title and still remain in single digits when it comes to their age. And unfortunately that’s enough to ensure this game will sell in similar numbers, when more worthwhile titles remain untouched.
