Cars is not the most complex racing game around, but it manages to capture the Pixar spirit very well. Aside from this, it’s an enjoyable game with solid gameplay and a great presentation. This is no doubt thanks to developers Rainbow Studios who have produced solid racing games before. The Xbox 360 version of Cars, thanks to slightly sharper graphics and achievements, is the best version of the game. It’s up to you whether this is worth the $20 premium over the current-generation versions.

If you have a rabid Cars fan in your household, this is a great thing to keep them happy. As kids' games go it's really fun, despite some quirks, and it's definitely something that kids will enjoy playing solo -- and won't bore you to tears as do so many games at this end of the market.

Cars is quite simply one of the best movie-to-game conversions in the history of the sketchy genre. The power of the 360 recreates the visuals of the film to near perfection and the original voice cast gives the limited script and story a complete air of authenticity. Best of all, Cars is just plain fun to play, with races, exploration, and even some tactical stealth puzzles, making this truly a game for all ages. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face, Cars is one of the most delightful games you can play this holiday season.

Although THQ is declaring that Rainbow's Cars adaptation is aimed squarely at "6-12 year olds," it's actually something remarkably enjoyable for anyone with a fondness for Pixar's charming stories and Rainbow Studios' knack for nailing driving-game dynamics.

Cars is based on the recently released Pixar movie of the same name. The story is about Lightning McQueen, a rookie race car who’s on his way to California to enter the Piston Cup Championship race. He gets sidetracked in the town of Radiator Springs, where he meets new friends who help him learn some valuable life lessons. The game Cars takes place a year after the big race, and Lightning McQueen has returned to Radiator Springs to hang with his friends while he gets ready to compete again. The game has been released to all consoles and handheld systems. The main console versions plus the PC game version are essentially the same game, but the handheld versions are all different.

Well, summer is here, and that means a lot more time at home with the kiddos. This obviously also means a lot more time for kids to get bored, too, during a rainy day, and here in Louisville, Kentucky this means that there's not a whole heck of a lot to do except go see movies. Anyways, the latest Pixar film, Cars, was the last one that we all got to go and see, and lo and behold I pop open my mailbox when we got home to find the game waiting there for me. So, fresh from the theater, my kids and I got the chance to sit down and play it and I must say that it's not a bad movie to game title ... especially for the youngsters.

Those who have played Cars before need not proceed to the Xbox 360 version. The graphics have only been given a slight upgrade, and the old camera problems are still present. Fortunately, for those who haven’t played the game yet, that isn’t all that’s been carried over to this port. The excitement of playing the game for the first time, its replay value, and satisfying driving and racing styles are completely intact. If you love the movie Cars, you mustn’t wait another second – play this game now.

"I'm faster than fast, quicker than quick. I am Lightning. I am speed." Cars hasn't been in theaters for much more than a week and already the story is being continued. Though a movie sequel may never be made, the Cars video game (developed by Rainbow Studios) picks up where the flick left off. Minor spoilers follow, as virtually every mission is a result of the events that took place in the film. Set in the massive world of Radiator Springs, Cars has numerous circuit races that take place right there in the middle of town. Once those (and several other missions) have been completed, you'll get the chance to enter NASCAR-style races like the one that launched McQueen's story.

Cars is a game that may be shoved aside because of its kiddy appearance, but once you look past that fact, it provides quite an enjoyable time. It was refreshing to play through a title that wasn't simply a copy of the film, either; the game picks up right where the "Cars" movie left off and lets you decide McQueen's fate. During the summer when good games are scarce, Cars is a great rental and a good buy for big fans of the movie.

Alongside Cars, the newest addition to the ever-growing and consistently high-quality lexicon of Pixar animated films, comes the predictable video game tie-in. But there's something altogether unfamiliar about this version of Cars, something unexpected from the perspective of anyone who's ever played a lackluster Pixar-licensed movie game before. You see, Cars isn't just a middling cash-in on the license. It's a legitimately fun piece of work that combines driving game components with an open-ended gameworld and a host of goofy minigames that aren't broken, tacked-on, or otherwise unpleasant.

Since Cars is primarily aimed at children it is an easy game to play. Although it doesn’t compare to the superior functionality of the Burnout series, the controls are simple and handle well with turbo-boosts, power-slides, and short jumps in the air to clear obstacles. You take on the role of Lightning McQueen, a young hot-shot race car who gets lost on the way to a championship race and meets some down-on-their-luck vehicles in need of business. The developers have created Radiator Springs, the ghost town where the majority of the movie takes place, in every detail. Free-roam capabilities allow you to talk with characters and accept racing challenges.

I can see this title being a lot of fun for young fans of the film that aren't familiar with more advanced racing games. The story mode offers a lot of gameplay and features characters kids are sure to enjoy. For gamers familiar with the speed and thrills of something like Burnout or Mario Kart, however, it just doesn't offer anything new at all. Recommended for the 12 and under crowd, but more seasoned gamers should steer clear.

The main Story mode takes place in a free-roaming Radiator Springs. All of the characters and many of the events of the film are re-created within the game. You won’t always play as the same car, and each one can be taken to the paint shop to get a different exterior. Basic gameplay involves driving from point of interest to point of interest, participating in a variety of minigames and races.

It would be nice to say that Cars bucks the trend, but the truth is that it's a completely unenthusiastic effort that falls squarely into the latter category. However, there's more to question, given that Cars is a children's game based on a children's movie; while it certainly doesn't break any new ground (indeed, the new ground is far off on the horizon for Cars), all it has to do is hit the notes that a child obsessed with Pixar's excellent movie would care about. Does it manage that?

TT1 , 2 & 3 persistently badger me for access to the PS2 when they have a game they love. They were initially excited at the prospect of playing Cars but it just didn’t have that “come back again” factor. There were no gentle taps on my nose at 6am asking to go on the PS2 as there was when they got Nintendogs…

Cars is a game that's not only fun for players, it's beneficial to the industry. It's easy to understand mechanics, inviting world, and friendly demeanor makes this a shining example of everything the industry can do right. It's almost a shame the younger set will be the majority playing this one.

Cars is quite simply one of the best movie-to-game conversions in the history of the sketchy genre. I wasn't expecting much more beyond a straight port from the other systems and that is exactly what I got with the Wii. The graphics aren't as good but they don't disappoint either. And while Rainbow put in a valiant attempt to add motion control they messed up with a bad and non-configurable default control scheme when it came to the button assignments. Despite these minor glitches, Cars is just plain fun to play, with races, exploration, and even some tactical stealth puzzles, making this truly a game for all ages. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face, Cars is a fun diversion for Wii gamers and a hint of things to come for the racing genre.

While it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination Cars is certainly among the best licensed games we have seen on the PS2 and one which younger audiences will love. It's fast, colourful and retains the sense of fun created by the movie. If you were a fan of the movie then you will probably enjoy this game, and it's definately worth a rental, if not a purchase.

What does detract from the Wii game a bit is that it happens to cost $20 more than its Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube cousins. If the Wii happens to be the only system in your household, Cars is a worthwhile interpretation of the film that's perhaps best suited for a younger kid but still holds some appeal for older fans of the film. But if you do own another platform that the game happens to be available for, the cheaper price tag and less intrusive minigame controls make it a better option than the Wii version.

Xbox 360GameSpot
Though Cars will almost certainly take you well under 10 hours to complete, there's two-player multiplayer to mess with, as well as some bonus materials to check out, and those pesky achievements which, while attainable by playing through the normal course of the game, can't be collected in a quick-and-dirty fashion. Not to mention that the quality of Cars' content is enough to make up for its relatively short stature. However, it can't quite make up for the amount of time that's passed since the older console versions of Cars came out, and the higher price tag of $49.99 at retail. If you skipped out on the game back in June, have a young Pixar fan at home, and an Xbox 360, the game is still a good one. But you might be better off grabbing one of the other versions, since the changes made here are so negligible.

Developed by Rainbow Studios, the software house that brought you the MX vs. ATV series, Cars has been given more focus on actually being a quality product than we've seen from most licensed games as of late, and that alone has kept us interested for the past few months. Though the final product might not be all we were hoping for, we're still quite happy to report that Cars is still leagues above the norm, providing a pretty solid iteration of the franchise that will accompany the movie quite well.

If you want to get to the good stuff, it's a good idea to dive right into the story mode. After an easy introductory race which turns out to be a dream, you're free to drive around Radiator Springs as the sporty, red Lightning McQueen, chatting up fellow talking automobiles and looking for events to enter and mini-games to play. The game gets off to a slow and simple start that might put off experienced gamers, but the gentle learning curve gradually ramps up, and you'll find yourself driving backwards, using turbo-boosts, leaning into corners, and having a bit of fun.

After being burned by titles like Catwoman, any game meant to promote a film is met with no small amount of doubt and fear. But Cars, at least as it appears on the Xbox and PS2 consoles, is different. The developer is Rainbow Studios, responsible for quite a few great racing games. They've added a free-roaming "sandbox" element, allowing you to drive anywhere in and around the film's town of Radiator Springs. Together with some great racing, the elements add up to much more than an eight-hour commercial for a film.

They may be a fundamental part of our industry, but licensed games often get the bad wrap when it comes to solid production value and core gameplay. After all, unlike the majority of top-tier games, licensed games oftentimes succeed or fail not because of the quality of the product itself, but the license it represents. Why continue to push game after game in the SpongeBob series or Power Rangers franchise? Simple. It makes cash. So when a game like Cars comes around that goes out of its way to attempt what others in its category stray away from, we pay close attention.

Based on Disney/Pixar's film of the same name, Cars happens to be a pretty good game. It captures the spirit of the film in its visuals and tone, there aren't any glaring technical issues, and it has thoughtful touches that make it an okay game to play. There are straightforward races, mini-games, and an easygoing story to follow. You can choose a Full-Size or Compact version of the story, with Compact offering a shorter and more forgiving experience geared towards younger gamers, or you can do the same activities with another player in Arcade mode. Even though the game is aimed at a younger audience, anyone interested in the movie will probably have a good time with it.

With all these head scratching gameplay decisions, compact story mode, and simplistic goals, it is very clear the audience Cars is shooting for is kids. Those who consider themselves racing fiends or love games like PGR3 and NFSMW should avoid Cars. The lack of polish in the controls, the simplistic A.I., and abnormal controls will aggravate you. Cars is one of the few licensed games ever to hit the market that can actually compete with mainstream titles based on its quality alone. Even more surprising than the fact that the game made it to the Mac is the fact that it is only available as a Macintosh/Windows hybrid set. Regardless, bolstered by an interesting story, simple (yet pleasurable) racing action, and a variety of mini-games, Cars achieves its goal of furthering the Cars experience that began at the theater. Overall, Cars is an honorable attempt at converting a children's movie property into a working racing game. The developers had the right ideas in place, they just weren't executed as well as they could have been. The open environment serves little purpose other than going from point A to point B, the controls (supposedly the Wii's strongest asset) are difficult to get acclimated with and the tractor tipping (while cute) is both frustrating and not very fun. I would cautiously give a thumbs up for parents to buy this for their kids, as long as they can get acquainted with the controls.

Cars for the Nintendo Wii brings out the fun factor of using the Wii remote while driving along with all the elements to make the game as enjoyable as the movie. Although, Cars has been released for all the other consoles it might be the most fun on the Wii given the motion sensitive controls. Keep in mind Cars is a turtle compared to the rabbit-like Excite Truck, so if you have a need for speed look elsewhere. If you're fine with a shell and four legs, Cars is a fun light hearted game that can be enjoyed by all ages.

"Cars" é um jogo simples, voltado a um público mais novo, daí seu nível de dificuldade moderado. Não que o game não possa ser apreciado por jogadores mais experientes, pois há muitos extras para destravar e também há desafios mais puxados, mas, em geral, a vida útil é curta. Como extensão da experiência do filme, o título obtém sucesso, mas analisando apenas o jogo, falta um pouco de profundidade em sua mecânica.

The game lasts about 6 to 7 hours for an adult and perhaps 10 to 12 for a younger audience. That includes unlocking every achievement and completing all the mini-games. While the game is an enjoyable romp through Pixar's cinematic creation, it doesn't hold a large amount of replay value. The multiplayer mode is entertaining the first few times through, but fails to hold attention any longer. I can only recommend renting this title until the game falls to the $20 range.

Then again, I’m completely forgetting about the ket demographic – kids. Other decent racers lack the immediate appeal that Cars has – and not just for its license to the movie. Characters are charming and the visuals are bright, clean and welcoming. The game offers a solid gameplay structure, but is easy enough for anyone to get through. There’s even a Kids Mode offered before you get started, ensuring that even the youngest, greenest of gamers can enjoy the downright fun in exploring while not getting put off from the difficulty of racing. So while Cars is far away from racing excellence, it’s a great middle of the road solution.

Cars, is an entertaining game and certainly holds true to the movie which will please fans no end. I encountered no real issues other than it was perhaps a little lacking in content, but that’s from an experienced older gamer point of view. Ultimately, Cars is aimed at kids and I think for the younger ones especially there is a lot of fun to be had here especially as it won’t induce fits of rage, tantrums and bouts of controller throwing. For any parent wishing to keep the kids quiet for a few hours then this game most certainly will fit the bill as there are no guns, blood, swearing or sexy babes to cause concern. It’s a fun peace loving game with themes about racing and that’s pretty much it.

Cars is surprisingly ‘okay’ for a film tie-in, but is ultimately let down by clearly being aimed solely at the younger market. But anyone out there thinking of getting a child a nice present should definitely look at this rather than something like Over the Hedge or Chicken Little.

Cars on Wii does a lot right: It looks good, it's clever and upbeat, and it's well-balanced for the target audience. The remote just doesn't add much to what's already come out on other platforms, and in fact brings down the overall game in some areas. This is the last console to get Cars, and that's the place it finishes in as well.

Cars features a truly huge game world with dozens of racing events and mini-games, so there is plenty to do. The presentation is also nice, with good-looking character models and lots of voice acting from the movie's stars, including Owen Wilson, Paul Newman, and yes, Larry the Cable Guy. There is plenty of bonus content, such as high-quality video clips from the movie. All of these things would make the game easy to recommend except that the racing gameplay at its core is simply too frustrating, the controls too inconsistent, and the races far too long.

The Xbox 360 version of this game has two positives over the original Xbox version. First, the wandering camera problem seems to have been fixed. Whereas the camera might randomly start looking at something a little off to the side of the road in the original version, here it seems to stay mostly where it’s put. Second, the already-impressive graphics have been given even more of a boost. Everything looks shinier and better in this version of the game.

Pixar don't go wrong with their children's movies, but the video game adaptations of said movies are rarely anything to get excited about. Strangely enough, Cars hasn't been as unanimously praised as previous Pixar movies, but the game is one of the best movie licensed products in some time. Cars the video game follows on from the movie, and is set in the same fun world where cars talk and interact as if they were people. While obviously targeted at a young audience, players of all ages will like the free-roaming gameplay and plethora of fun mini-games, even if a few problems with the actual racing prevent it from being the game it should have been.

Summer? Check. Kids’ film from Disney/Pixar? Check. Rubbish videogame to try and cash-in on the film’s success? Che-…oh, wait.

The attempt to cash-in on the almost-guaranteed success of Cars might be there, but the actual game itself, shockingly, isn’t rubbish. What’s gone wrong?

If you have a young one that’s still a Cars fan, and you haven’t picked up another version of the game for him or her yet (with the possible exception of the ultra-simple PC version), then this makes a decent purchase when looked at on its own. However, given the less than ideal Wii Remote & Nunchuk support I recommend the GameCube version, which can of course be played on the Wii and is a better value at $20 cheaper.

What the crivens is this? A Pixar game-of-the-movie not based on familiar kleptomaniaical platforming jolliness? Currently number one in the nation's charts, you say? Outselling Grand Theft Auto while borrowing its sandbox game structure? Someone cancel E3! What? They did? Hurrah!
