For a free, first Doctor Who Point and Click Adventure Game, this one actually hits the spot and provides a good chunk of episodic entertainment. We'd like to see a full on, fully realised PC or console (360/PS3) style Doctor Who Adventure Game where it is possible to interact with the TARDIS and explore more than you can, but we're now confident that this kind of game is definitely viable, even though it has some problems it'll be one to get mom, dad and the kids around the PC and playing to guide the Doctor and Amy on their travels, save the Earth and delve a little deeper into the Doctor Who Universe than they could before. Real world facts are sprinkled into the game world, so who says that PC games can't be educational. The City of the Daleks is well worth a download since this story is canon and part of the Doctor Who timeline for 2010, we can't wait to see what the next game has in store for us.

In sum, Doctor Who: The Adventure Games: Episode One: City of the Daleks is quite an enjoyable game. While fans of Doctor Who will undoubtedly relish the experience, non-fans of the show will also likely gain some pleasure playing the game. Compared to previous computer games featuring Doctor Who, this game is definitely among the better adaptations of the franchise.

As the first instalment of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, City of the Daleks circumvents this issue. It’s a great game, successfully fulfilling the family audience requirement that the BBC hope will get families to gather around a PC in the same way that they gather around a TV every Saturday evening to enjoy time travelling adventure in Doctor Who...

Overall, City of the Daleks is a fun diversion for a few hours. It has plenty of flaws, to be sure, but, for UK residents at least, it’s completely free, which makes it hard not to recommend. If you’re a Doctor Who fan, and were considering giving this one a go, I’d say go for it – just bear in mind the shortcomings. If you have kids who love the TV show, this is almost a must-have, though be prepared to be on hand to help out with a few frustrating bits. Bring on the Cybermen in Episode 2!

Ultimately, City of the Daleks represents a disappointing introduction to Doctor Who: The Adventure Games, as repetitive action, a small cast of characters and trivial tasks damage the impact of this first episode. The brilliant music, expansive locales and witty dialogue save the game from completely falling flat, but the developers can’t solely rely on these to carry the Doctor and Amy through the rest of their four-part adventure. While I spent my time sneaking past yet another Dalek, I couldn’t help but wish for more variety and something significant to do. Fans of the show are sure to appreciate the nods to the past, but if you don’t already enjoy watching Doctor Who, you’re unlikely to discover what makes the series so popular from this game alone.

Misschien ideaal voor de onvervalste (jonge, Britse) fans, maar anders zou ik zeggen: "not your cup of tea, my dear!".
