Only hardened gamesplayers will be able to get further than halfway through most missions; single players will run out of patience not long after running out of lives. A two-player game makes things easier and more enjoyable, introducing elements of teamwork stratagem. The best dual player shoot-and-run game you can buy.

Dogs of War is essentially an Ikari Warriors, improving on that game with the superb range of weapons and multi- directional scrolling. Although hardly innovative, the simple shoot-'em-up gameplay is very addictive and (as always) more fun with two players. The trouble is, all the missions play much the same, and the action eventually get repetitive.

What you have in Dogs of War is essentially Ikari Warriors with bells and whistles, but unfortunately the bells and whistles only succeed in detracting from the original concept of the game.

Graphics are an improvement on those in the 16-bit version of Ikari Warriors, and there is a bearable soundtrack by David Whitacker. Playability wise this is not up to Ikari standards, but if you have someone else to hand for a two-player game, then it might be worth taking a look...

AmigaAmiga Joker (Dec, 1989)

Looking very much like Leatherneck, Dogs of War is a competent 'shoot everything that moves' type of game. I feel that these type of games are far too similar and too commonplace. Nevertheless, Dogs of War is very addictive, if a little hard, and should keep you amused for some time. If you haven't got Leatherneck or Ikari Warriors, it may be worth your while to buy Dogs of War.
