Instead, the Big N builds on recognition of the Donkey Kong name to launch an ultra-advanced, 32-megabit monster featuring textured, three-dimensional characters, CD-quality music, and backgrounds that look like movie matte paintings. Donkey Kong Country is to most 16-bit games what most 16-bit games are to their Atari forebears. Once you've played it, everything else before it seems like a peewee.

A blockbuster hit, Donkey Kong Country literally changed the face of video games in 1994. Although its gameplay borrows heavily from Super Mario Bros, its groundbreaking graphics and animation blew everything else out of the water.

Absolute 16-bit perfection. It just does not get any better. SGI graphics that make you gasp for air, scrolls out the ying-yang, play mechanics galore, hidden stuff up the wazoo and music to die for!! Donkey Kong Country chuckles at the Jag and 3DO, as it flies by, untouched. The SNES must be a 32-bit in disguise.

With such a strong replay value, Donkey Kong Country is sure to be a colossal hit this holiday. If you want to hit an ape ball in the side pocket, you'll recognize DKC for what it is: the gorilla of your dreams.

DKC was quite simply an amazing game and I certainly feel that it changed the way many video games are made today. The SNES hardware is pushed to all new limits with DKC, leaving what is believed to be very little room for improvement in any aspect. In conclusion, if you are looking for a good platformer to play and you haven’t tried this game yet, then look no further because this is the game you want to play.

DKC is a must have for GBC owners! But for people who own or owned the original DKC, you will not find much new stuff to make you want to buy this. Unless you want enjoy one of your fav games on the road.

So, from the fancy graphics to the new features and everything else, Donkey Kong Country really delivers. It's sure to be up there with MK II as the biggest SNES games this Christmas and could really do good things for ol' DK's career. After years of sitting on his butt, the big ape could use a steady cash flow.

Hello? Is this really the Super NES I'm playing? It's hard to believe the graphics and sounds like this are coming from a 16-bit system. But that's not all - combine those features with an extremely long and playable game and you have one helluva winner. Who needs 32 or even 64-Bit when Nintendo can keep pulling marvels out of the 16-Bit hat? Donkey Kong Country is simply mind-blowing.

Game Boy ColorGaming Target
Anyone who played the original SNES trilogy years ago should still enjoy this title. If you own DKC for SNES and are playing it or just played it then it might not be worth the 30 or so dollars. Also I would like to note that an impatient gamer may be turned off by some really frustrating parts. But for all those people who enjoyed any of the DK games so far (Donkey Kong Country 1,2,3 and Donkey Kong Land 1,2,3) or even similar a platformer like Mario Bros should find this is a good purchase.

Fortunately, Donkey Kong Country isn't a title you'll easily tire of, providing just the right amount of challenge throughout its eye-popping levels. There's an impressive amount of variety in the stage design, as you'll blast across cannon-like barrels spinning through the air, ride inside a mine cart, swim across treacherous waters, and more. It's no Super Mario World, but Donkey Kong Country is still a must-have cartridge packed with fun, if familiar, action. The big ape makes a triumphant debut in the spotlight after years of playing second banana to a paunchy plumber.

Donkey Kong Country is simply a classic and one that translates well on the GBA. Though some of the graphics have been given a downgrade and the soundtrack itself is a bit lacking, the overall quality of the game hasn't changed a bit. The gameplay is intact and is a blast to play through. Anyone looking for some good old platforming games need look no further... Donkey Kong Country has got you covered.

Years later, this faithful reproduction demonstrates that this DKC’s gorgeous pre-rendered graphics have not dimmed with age. Thankfully, neither has the demanding platforming gameplay. However, if you’re prone to frustration, you’ll be happy that one of the new enhancements to this port is the ability to save mid-level. Also, there is a challenge mode that lets you try to post the fastest time through a level, a feature inspired by the Crash Bandicoot series.

Donkey Kong Country is just as engrossing as ever. I remember what a great time I had reliving the magic with the Game Boy Color version, and wondered if another version of the game would hinder DKC's classic status. I should have known better than to question the game's quality. Was Mario any less fun on the GBA, despite having already played through the game a hundred times? Not at all.

What then is the conclusion? What conclusion could there be but that anybody who is a fan of the SNES needs to have this game? If you don't have an SNES, there are ports of this game on the GBC and the GBA, and I'd bet it will be on the Wii for download one of these days as well. Whatever the method, if you are a fan of platformers, you owe it to yourself to try this game.

SNESIGN
Donkey Kong Country is a solid addition to anyone's collection and it has been revisited a handful of times over the years. Its visual style and gameplay design were first adapted to the Game Boy as Donkey Kong Land in 1995, and then the original game itself was ported to the Game Boy Color in 2000. In 2003, it went portable again, ported to the Game Boy Advance before finally hitting the Virtual Console in 2007. Keep in mind, though, that some of your nostalgic feelings may take a hit, as its revolutionary-in-1994 visuals aren't as spectacular any more, now in 2007. But DKC's gameplay is still a lot of fun, and it's still easy to see why this was the game that saved the Super NES.

For those of you that missed out on the DKC phenomenon six years ago, now is your chance to see what all the fuss was about. Rare has done a fantastic job transferring the game to the GBC. They even added some bonus modes of play to make the package more appealing. You can now play Funky's Fishing and Crosshair Cranky with a friend via the link-up cable or against the computer. If you already own the original DKC there's not much new here, but at least now you'll be able to play on the go. The game still plays as good as it always has. It's great to see a company truly push the GBC to the limit and I can't wait to see what's next from Rare on Game Boy Advance!

Overall, DKC is capable of standing the test of time, at least 10 years after its original showing. The games action and excitement is still retained on the pocket-sized version of the game, even if it is a bit difficult to see, though I'm sure if you can afford a fancy-shmancy GBA SP you're problems are solved. I refuse to change though and by the system, just as Nintendo refuses to make good original games anymore.

I had fun playing this game and will continue to do so in the future, as well as eventually trying out its sequels. However, the game lacked that extra something, that rare spark that makes me want to play something over and over again, no matter how many times I’ve beaten it. For me, Donkey Kong Country is very enjoyable as a new experience, but it’s certainly no Super Mario World. However, that shouldn’t stop you from picking it up on the Virtual Console, because it is certainly worth the price. Few games can attain perfection, but this very ambitious SNES title is definitely a valiant effort.

Game Boy AdvanceNintendoWorldReport
Overall, Donkey Kong Country is a pleasant surprise. While I was expecting the worst from the initial screens and media (even up to the release), I was surprised and pleased when I actually played the game. I'm still unsure about the day-glo palette used for most of the levels (make the levels darker for DKC2, Rare!), but the classic DKC gameplay and additional modes more than make up for this problem. It's great to meet up with K.Rool, Winky, Diddy, and of course, Cranky again -- and sadly, it makes me want a Donkey Kong Country 4 even more, which I know is highly unlikely. First-time platform gamers will enjoy this, but veterans expecting a perfect port may feel a little cheated at first.

In fact, the sheer number of different threads to keep open in your head - KONG letters, secret rooms, camera icons, animal icons, etc - means that you'll often play each level plenty of times, and there's something about their design that makes even the ones that seem infuriatingly tricky the first time through comfortable and easy to explore under the more relaxed conditions of a treasure hunt.

Game Boy AdvanceIGN
The game design of Donkey Kong Country on the Game Boy Advance doesn't stray at all from the game Rare established on the Super NES almost a decade ago back in 1994. Players take control of either Donkey Kong or his chimp buddy Diddy Kong, as they set off on a quest after King K.Rool stole the ape's banana hoard. To get all those bananas back, players will have to hop and bop kremling thugs and other threats through more than 30 levels of jungle areas.

Game Boy AdvanceGameSpot
Donkey Kong Country doesn't play any better than other adventure games available for the GBA, but it certainly looks great and offers plenty of variety.

A small yet popular portion of the Game Boy Advance library consists of remakes of Super NES games. Breath of Fire, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Island are just a few of the many games that have been bought back to life on Nintendo's diminutive handheld system. The latest to join the roster is Donkey Kong Country, which was originally released in 1994 as a joint project between Rare and Nintendo. By and large, it's a faithful port of a fondly remembered platformer.

Back then, the game leapt off store shelves to the tune of more than 8 million copies sold, because it combined familiar characters and traditional platform-jumping gameplay with a graphical technique that was relatively uncommon at the time.

Game Boy AdvanceDigital Entertainment News (den)
In the end, Donkey Kong Country's sound and graphics fare as "decent" overall, and with the splendor of the original essentially gone, what players are left with is a simple platformer. Fans of the original may enjoy this game for whatever nostalgia hasn't been sucked out in the transition to the GBA, and the game is still a decent platformer, but there are numerous alternatives on the platform that are much more deserving of your hard-earned money.

Game Boy AdvanceGamePro
Released in 1994, Donkey Kong Country is a historically significant game, and this GBA port is a window back to that glorious age, when Nintendo was undisputed king, Rare was its prince, and all you needed to build hype was to mention Silicon Graphics on the box.
65
Game Boy AdvanceGameSpy
In the SNES days, few developers could afford to give the attention to their platformers that Rare could, but these days it's par for the course. DKC doesn't have the true enduring spirit of creativity that its brothers-in-arms, the Mario games, do. But it's got that certain something that draws people back to it, a personality which is lacking even from the Crash Bandicoot forays onto the GBA, despite their own solidity. DKC is a simple, fun game. But if this is your first time to play it, you may not understand what wowed everyone and sold so many millions of cartridges back in the day. Like an aging starlet, DKC is now relegated to a supporting role -- it's no longer a box office draw.

55
SNESKingdom of Desire

As a whole, this game is quite average. You're unlikely to find much of anything remarkable about it at all.
