The bongos, at first glance, seem like little more than a gimmick to grab attention, but 2D platformers have been gone from the console scene for years. Now it takes something that seems like a gimmick to bring one about, but even without the bongos Jungle Beat would be an excellent 2D platformer with a great sense of style and humor. With them, it's an amazingly energetic chunk of gaming joy that physically engages the player in the action more than a brisk round of button-pressing could ever hope to.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat isn't a Donkey Kong Country game, and it doesn't pretend to be one. The game does not have many levels by platformer standards, and its bosses are a let-down, but the levels are undeniably well-designed. Arcade-style gamers who appreciate time trials and score meters should most definitely buy this fantastic game, and anyone with a pair of DK Bongos should give it a rental.

Yet despite this brevity, Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat remains a must-have title for the Cube, if only for the fact you’ll be grinning through the pain of your throbbing palms. In this age of samey FPS’s and yearly updates of continuing franchises, isn’t it refreshing to have someone come up with a quirky idea, and a company having the balls to follow it through?

Donkey Kong has to brave the dangers of the jungle to rescue his simian pals! Feel the beat of a completely new gaming experience as you drum through an incredible jungle adventure with Donkey Kong! Run, jump, battle, swing on vines and collect bananas and baby apes as you explore beautiful side-scrolling environments. You'll also have to hitch rides on parrots and bounce off pinball-like obstacles. Create sound waves that can stun enemies, jump off walls and even spar with other apes.

Nintendo games are surreal. Think about it. Where else will you find blindingly colorful worlds filled with giant-sized mushrooms, stretching rainbows and man-eating plants? In what other titles do "Super Happy Tree Fruit" grow wild? And how many other publishers can claim that one of their biggest mascots is little more than a blubbery, pink blob of gelatinous goo? Over the years, the Japanese-based development studio has churned out hit after hit, each one testing our skill and -- perhaps even more -- our imaginations. More recently, the software house has endeavored to provide us with new ways to play games, including the handheld Nintendo DS, which uses two screens, one of them with touch functionality.

Boss gripes aside, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is a fantastic platforming game with plenty of new ideas and a great style to call its own. The game also features beautiful graphics which are reminiscent of the technical qualities of Rare’s Star Fox Adventures. It’s been a long time since we had a great action game starring Donkey Kong (I’m not counting DK64), and Jungle Beat makes a strong case for this big ape to stick around for many years to come. As much as Nintendo has done for 3D gaming, here is evidence that they still know how to make excellent 2D platformers. Mario, you’re on deck.

Although not all negative points from the original have been removed this does remain a game we gladly suggest to check out. Everything that made it so good is still present. The possibility to use the bongos would be nice but those that have the original game can just as easily put that disc in the Wii as there's no new reason to get this one. If you don't have it yet, there's no reason to buy it now, though, as the 30 euros price is no excuse to let this one pass by.

I'd be lying if I indicated I didn't miss bongo support for this once- wholly-unique 3D platformer. I do. I've still got my bongos so it's downright disappointing that I can't plug them in and play with them. But that said, the 'new play controls' work very well and, besides, they do sometimes add welcomed precision and responsiveness. The amazing graphical presentation -- great for four years ago and still great by Wii standards today -- holds up beautifully. And best of all, the engaging level designs will still suck you in and the combo system will keep you coming back for more. With it's reduced price tag -- less than $29.99 online -- DK Jungle Beat is a fantastic platformer that discerning Nintendo fans shouldn't be without.

Back in the days of the 2D-age, Donkey Kong was one of the most well-known game characters. Together with his friends he would go out on typically 2D-sidescrolling platform adventures and whoever dares to deny these were super cool is a total idiot. The first announced Cube game featuring Donkey Kong was Donkey Konga (not counting the cancelled Donkey Kong Racing), a music game that needed to be controlled with drums; de DK Bongo's. Some found it a bit sad not to get a true adventure, others (like me) enjoyed very much of the happy drumming. Now, Nintendo has released Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, a sidescrolling adventure with flashy 3D graphics, controlled with the bongo's. Read on to find out whether it's worth something.

Merci Nintendo ! Vraiment, merci !

One of the better and more intuitive New Play Control titles. If you pick up any New Control Play game out right now, make sure it's this one.

The only real issue is that it’s a short play; around four or five hours from start to finish. That time can be increased significantly should players choose to replay each kingdom stage with an aim to earn a higher score (which will also unlock a few bonus levels), but this is the sort of challenge that typically only appeals to hardcore platform game lovers. The bottom line is that it’s fun but brief. Even with its relatively low price tag, the new Jungle Beat might make a better rental than purchase.

Those waiting for the Revolution may be surprised to learn that it's already here. We're all keen to see just what Nintendo has in mind for its next generation console, but if the goal is as professed - to level the playing field and invent new ways for us to interact with and enjoy console games - then the Revolution's already taking place on high streets around the world.

Whenever an unusual, game-specific controller hits the scene, the expectation is that you're dropping a hundred bucks, sometimes more, on something that will only work with one specific game. Gran Turismo 4, Steel Battalion, Ace Combat 5, and Samba de Amigo as just a handful of examples of games with high novelty value that also come at a higher price.

Dance Dance Revolution may have a monopoly on exercising the lower part of the body, but the bongo-driven GameCube titles surely give the arms and torso the most frenetic workout on the market today.

If you've already purchased Donkey Konga, there's no reason for you not to pick up Jungle Beat. You'll still need something to do with those bongos until Donkey Konga 2 hits. Besides that, it's simply a fun game to play. Even though there's no multiplayer option, it's still a fun game to enjoy with some friends. Pass the bongos back and forth between stages and have a blast drumming Donkey Kong on his journey.

GameCubeThe Video Game Critic
It's fairly amazing and certainly original. Jungle Beat is strictly a single player game, and there's only one playing mode. That's fine, because with the constant pounding and clapping, you'll want to keep your play sessions brief anyway. Beware - this game will give your arms a workout! For the record, I tried using a normal controller but that just sucked. It's easy to write off Jungle Beat as a novelty item, but this game is too fun to resist.

Let’s say that you are playing the original Super Mario Bros., but your sturdy, reliable NES controller has undergone some modification. Each time you press a button, there is a 75 percent chance that it performs the desired function. The other 25 percent of the time, it acts as though you either pressed an entirely different button or no button at all. Naturally, this situation would present some problems if you were trying to perform any precise tasks like hopping on an enemy or leaping an expanse of bubbling lava. Now, all you have to do is replace Mario in this scenario with a hulking gorilla and you have Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

Overall, Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is a scream...for the first eight levels. Once you've seen what the game has to offer, though, there's not a lot to come back to. Anyone with moderately developed action game skills will finish this game in one day, probably without actually dying once. That makes this a rental, at best, but if you're shopping for young children that like to smack stuff, or if you already picked up the bongo drums and are desperate for anything else that uses them, you could make a case for adding this one to your permanent collection.

I can easily say that Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat is one of the more interesting games that I’ve played in recent months, and if you already own a pair of bongos, you really owe it to yourself to give this game a shot, because it will provide several hours of non-stop fun. The question of whether to buy Jungle Beat is something of a dicier proposition, however. The current price of $60 for the game bundled with the bongos is extremely high, and even $40 for the game by itself (if you already have the bongos) is pushing it for a game that will last no more than a couple of days, unless you love it enough to hunt down every last crest. If only the game weren’t so expensive, the added cost of the bongos notwithstanding, I’d be able to recommend it in a heartbeat, but the relative brevity and light difficulty keep me from being able to recommend Jungle Beat as anything other than a solid rental.

GameCubeCheat Code Central
Jungle Beat is a clean looking game, maybe a little sterile looking. The jungle environments are a little too sparse in places. Some of the graphics are too angular making the jungle appear as though it's been constructed from origami but at least there are no jaggies, slowdown or clipping. The giant creatures that DK runs into are well rendered and smoothly animated. If you're not fighting or avoiding them you can sometimes jump on their back and go for a ride. The level designs are imaginative but a little more variation would be welcome. The tunes are cheery and the sound effects are right on the money but the pounding of the drums can get on your nerves after a while.

Like a barrel hoisted from the heavens, the life of the infamous ape Donkey Kong has seen its share of highs and lows. No one will ever forget the dark December day when this would-be Kong lost his bananas and went on a violent spree through Westchester Construction Yard. Oh, the humanity!
