It's obvious id, Jamdat, and developer Fountainhead were intent on making this an epic game for the mobile space. The final coup-de-grace is DOOM RPG's length. After three and a half hours, I was nowhere near the end -- and that's twice as long as most finite mobile games take to beat. That's a good thing, because you never want your hellish Mars "vacation" to end. In DOOM RPG, the role you play is happy gamer.

Whether you are on the go a lot or not, as long as you have a compatible cell phone, the DOOM RPG is a must have for any fan of the original game.

J2MEWireless Gaming World
DOOM RPG is a huge game for mobile phones not just in size but in meaning. For such an important franchise to make it onto a wireless handset and be pulled off so exceptionally well, it speaks volumes as to the quality of games that can be made. It has hours of game play, loads of secrets and inside jokes plus long lasting replay value. I just had to finish the game in one sitting because I was so enthralled, but you can play it at your leisure. If you can download games onto your mobile phone, and it’s available on your carrier, you must experience this game.

Doom RPG is a compelling and engaging game that stands on its own on the mobile platform. Nothing has been done quite like it before this on the platform, but this game is so well done that imitators are almost guaranteed.

DOOM RPG is a superbly playable mobile RPG. The game starts off with a good, easy level for players to get acquainted with the set-up and the general flow of game play, but wade a few levels deeper into hell and the game spirals out of control -- but in the good way. Monsters get brutish and aggressive, better weapons produce splashier bloodstains, and the puzzles deeper. Never a dull moment. Like I said above, although this is based on a game from 1993, DOOM RPG is a fresh experience for mobile. Very casual gamers might not get into this, but traditional vidders looking for an entry point into the mobile arena need look no further. Hugely recommended.

It's something of a rule here at Pocket Gamer that we don't start our reviews with references to other games. This time we're going to have to make an exception, however. Whether it's the classic PC original, the recent Hollywood movie, or even the slightly alarmist press coverage it's garnered over the years, we're going to assume you've heard of Doom. We're also going to assume that you probably have certain expectations of any game or film attached to the title, namely that it'll include exploring mazes and shooting at monsters, that there's plenty of blood and gore and that the experience is scary, yet somehow intensely entertaining. The good news is that Doom RPG delivers on all these expectations; even better news is that it adds a few neat twists of its own.

Overall, Doom RPG is a great piece of mobile software. It's an interesting game, and while it may feel slightly unfair at times, it's longer than most mobile games, it looks and sounds better than most mobile games, and it feels like a great fit for its platform. If you're at all interested in Doom, RPGs, or some sort of crazy combination of the two, Doom RPG is definitely worth your time.

This is what mobile gaming is about, accepting the limitations of the mobile and caressing the game into the mobile mould.

Ultimately Doom RPG can be an addictive and rewarding experience, and while it may not boast quite the same style of level design as the games that inspired it, the Doom look and feel is very much apparent, albeit with an extra air of freshness about it. With humour, style, fun gameplay and a decent amount of longevity for a game that costs a fiver, this is definitely what we look for in mobile entertainment.

I’m never really sure from sales numbers how DOOM has fared on mobile platforms such as the Game Boy or PDAs but I imagine it’s not that successful. Thus, DOOM RPG is a good design gamble. It won’t necessarily win new audiences but it turns DOOM’s twitch action into a slower paced game that plays more like PC RPG classics such as Might and Magic. This pace is more palatable to mobile gaming and a refreshing twist on the classic that coincides with the release of a new DOOM movie.

I thoroughly enjoyed playing through the game, and would not be surprised if a sequel or two came to follow up on its success. It's not too challenging, but it certainly is fun, and it helps pass the time in many boring situations. For a one-time cost of six dollars, it's also a reasonable purchase. If you haven't checked out the mobile gaming market yet, don't let yourself fall too easily into the skepticism that all the games are bad by default. On the contrary, I found the Doom RPG to be an enjoyable pastime from day to day, and I'll probably replay it a few times to find all the various secrets the game has to offer. I'd recommend the game to just about anyone.

More so than any of its predecessors, Doom RPG Mobile is supposed to inspire us to strategize and solve puzzles to reach its end, but even with these sophisticated elements it degenerates into a mindless shooter. I suppose that's fitting because it would have really sucked if the developers attempted to craft something totally different (like Doom RTS or DOOM the dating simulator). But even though this game loses much of its focus it still provides a hell of a good time and on a cell phone, no less. Sequels should follow, and if id Software is smart, it'll include the axe in its next first person shooter.

Doom RPG certainly isn't the same Doom, but it wouldn't be nearly as much fun if it was. Compromises have to be made when bringing a game over to mobile, and it's to Doom's credit that most of these don't feel much like compromises at all. It plays to the strengths of the platform while gracefully overcoming the shortcomings, which is the most that anyone can ask. It's probably not quite as much fun as playing classic Doom at home or on more dedicated gaming devices, but it's hands down one of the best games to be found on a cell.
