Summary
A very controversial title
The Good
This one I remember from my childhood, from the era of Commander Keens and Epic megagames platformers. Captain Comic seemed like a twisted crippled brother of Keen, had strange graphics, odd sounds and I used to have nightmares about the game. Still, in some odd way, it was addictive. At that time, I was of course unable to understand almost anything about the story or the goals of the game, nor did I get very far in it, but tt wasn't a bad game, it was just... different. I must give props for unique surroundings, idea and visual look :-)
The Bad
Well, to be honest, the controls are quite choppy, which is the worst part of the game. In addition to that, many enemies move in jumps rather than smoothly, so predicting the path of a bird or a ball is a bit hard especially when you take into account the slow speed of the fireball Captain is shooting.
I also hate the fact that enemies regenerate all the time, so it feels rather useless shooting at them. Most of the time I just avoid them while running around in the (mostly) empty levels. You might find a shield or a bottle here or there, but not really all that much as you might guess from the item description screen (and from other games, especially the Keens are full of collectable stuff).
Even after all these years I found Captain Comic quite hard to play, especially the "atoms" and other fast moving enemies are hard to avoid and shoot until one gets the fireball-shooting-thingie upgraded to more rapid fire. Oh, and the sounds are really not good. I enjoy the game more while muted ;-)
The Bottom Line
Hard to say anything conclusive. Some love it, some hate it. But it sure is worth a try.
