Albion

All in all, Albion is one of the best RPGs ever. A gripping story, a wonderful world, interesting characters, very good sounds and good graphics make this game a must-have for any RPG-fan, as well as any other player. It deserves a clear 5, though I would give Albion a 10 if I could.

A good but short game, pretty short, which is probably the reason of the last part of the game, a pair of tediously long dungeons, so long and tedious that I ended having to use cheats if I didn't wish to expend days fighting my way.

Albion is a breath of fresh air for the RPG crowd. It offers something old, something new as the cliche goes. Though it may not offer enough CD-chrome to impress a new generation of SVGA indoctrinated gamers, those who cut their teeth on the likes of Might and Magic, Wizardry, and Ultima may find that the future looks a little brighter because of this latest offering from Blue Byte.

Albion bietet solide Rollenspielkost. Die Story hebt sich erfreulich vom Genre-üblichen "Vernichte-den-Tyrannen"-Schema ab. Blue Byte hat viel Wert auf kulturelle Besonderheiten unterschiedlicher Völker gelegt. Die späteren Dungeons sind durch erhöhte Monster- und Rätseldichte extrem fordernd, die Grafik im 2D-Modus allerliebst. Selten habe ich so phantasievolle und detailverliebte Interieurs gesehen. Apropos Detail: Durch die Auflösung von 360 x 240 Bildpunkten kommen selbst kleinere Gegenstände gut, ohne daß das Spiel auf einem DX2-66 zur Ruckelorgie verkommt. Negativ: Der 3D-Part wirkt aufgepropft und veraltet. Besser man hätte auf das trendige 3D-Element verzichtet. Spielerisch stört ein wenig, daß man weder eigene Charaktere kreieren noch zünftige Keilereien anzetteln kann. Wen solche Schönheitsfehler nicht stören, der hat garantiert wochenlangen Spielspaß.

Albion stemmt sich gegen die Trends zur spielerischen Leichtigkeit. Ein grundsolides Rollenspiel deutscher Produktion, das Fans komplexer Hit-Points-Sagen zu schätzen wissen.

Spillet afslører fra starten en række særheder, som man lærer at leve med, hvis er fanget ind i rollespilseffekten og den detaljerede verden. Det er der utvivlsomt mange, der bliver, men Albion rummer for mange svage punkter til at kapre en rigtig god karakter.

In Blue Byte's hybrid role-playing game Albion, nothing is as it first appears. On the surface, the game has a look and feel that eager RPGers will take to at once, despite the fact that the story unfolds in deep space, instead of the familiar caverns that most other role-playing games call home. Casting yourself in the role of the game's youthful and handsome space jock, Tom Driscoll, is a pleasure. The opener: A scouting mission gone afoul finds you crash-landing on what you thought was a desert planet, in the company of a peaceful, alien race a-revel in a flora and fauna world that's anything but dried up. The danger - and the game's fair-enough premise - is out there and approaching fast, in the shape of your own mother ship, whose hazardous aim is to land on the planet and set up shop. Its arrival will spell disaster for the newfound habitat. Hey, Tom, you can't let this happen. And so you begin.

Wieder einmal sind die Eindrücke sehr verschieden. Programmtechnisch macht Albion nicht viel her, es mangelt sowohl in den Punkten Grafik, Sound als auch Spielkomfort, selbst wenn das Handling wirklich anwenderfreundlich ist. Dagegen steht eine interessante, wenn auch nicht völlig neue Story und viele knackige Rätsel, an denen man sich oft die Zähne ausbeißt.

Despite a strong plot and a variety of play styles, Albion feels as though it's all on the same level - much as a true desert world would be. If there's a sequel - and I hope there is - the makes will need to rev up the engine.

Totalt sett är Albion ett riktigt kul spel för de som har gott om tålamod, för det tar lång tid att sätta sig in i spelet. Personligen föredrar jag rollspel som kastar in mig snabbare i handlingen, me ndet är ju en smaksak.
