Amazon: Guardians of Eden

So all in all this is a great game I completely missed the first time around, and that’s why I’m so glad I got a chance to play it now (especially since no good adventure games are being made anymore). I warmly recommend this game to everybody who loves the adventure genre, because it’s a pure 5-point game.

Rating Amazon: Guardians of Eden is a tough job: the game is a solid, old-fashioned aventure with clever puzzle design, an engrossing B-movie story and very likeable characters. The overall experience, however, is harmed by serious problems in terms of gameplay and interface, not to mention production values that have aged horribly, at least in the absence of SVGA compatibility. The final score must account for all these flaws, and yet this is a game that I can’t help but recommend to old-school adventurers. Not only does Amazon represent a fundamental passage from earlier Access Software titles to the more mature games heralded by Under a Killing Moon, it has much to offer as an adventure in its own right. It may be dated and may be flawed, but it’s undeniably entertaining.

Super-VGA hin, digitale Bilderflut her: Auch mit dem dritten Adventure-Titel schaffen die digitalen Künstler von Access nicht den Sprung in die Rätseloberliga. Dazu fehlen dem Neuzugang Amazon zwei entscheidende Charakteristika, die für ein gelungenes Adventurevergnügen unabdingbar sind: Ambiente und Puzzlepower. Eine echte Spielatmospähre kommt trotz vieler Anleihen bei amerikanischen B-Movies der 50er Jahre und den zahlreichen Digi-Sequenzen nur selten auf. Zudem bewegt sich die Qualität der Puzzles deutlich unter der Gütegürtellinie. Die so hoch gepriesene Super-VGA-Option erweist sich schnell als Mogelpackung. Zwar ist die Grafik dank hoher Auflösung detailreicher, aber dafür der Bildausschnitt um einiges kleiner und auf einem herkömmlichen 14-Zoll-Monitor nur noch mit einer Lupe zu erkennen.
