At the pilot selection screen in the control center, highlight the dead pilot’s name. Double click on the name and double click on the pilot’s shiny section of his harness buckle. Now click “ok” and the game will freeze for a bit. When it unfreezes, click ''ok'' to return to the control center. The pilot will no longer be deceased and will now be “pining for the fjords''.
