Battle Isle 2200

Battle Isle 2 is, quite simply, a masterpiece. I must admit to some trepidation when I first began to play it. How could Blue Byte possibly packed more features into such a classic game without ruining it's instant appeal and accessibility? But they have do so with ease. Furthermore, the little presentational extras, like animated sequences and a slicker interface only help to absorb the player more into the game. If you played and loved the original, then this is going to keep you happy for a long time and, if you're new to Blue Byte's creation, you are really in for a treat.

It has the most important qualities of any good wargame: It's easy to learn yet tough to master. Only one unit can attack an enemy at a time; the graphics and sound are average. A wargame you can jump right into, but that offers plenty of challenge.

Bei Battle Isle II hat man noch einmal "einen drauf gesetzt": Zahlreiche Anregungen der Kunden wurden umgesetzt und die Komplexität erhöht, ohne die Spielbarkeit zu erschweren. Der von Karte zu Karte ansteigende Schwierigkeitsgrad mit der allmählichen Einführung neuer Elemente weist Sie behutsam in die Möglichkeiten des Programms ein. Wechselnde Wetterverhältnisse und die Notwendigkeit, die Stellungen des Gegners zu erkunden, sorgen für zusätzliche Spannung. Zwar ist die Kartenansicht nicht gerade pompös, doch die Animations-Sequenzen sind bislang einmalig für ein Strategiespiel. Der Mehrspieler-Modus mit seinem Warteschlangen-Syndrom erfordert hingegen Mitspieler, die sich zwischen ihren Zügen problemlos mit anderen Dingen beschäftigen können und ist daher nur mit Vorbehalt zu genießen. Abzuwarten bleibt, was aus der angekündigten Netzwerk-Option wird. Abgesehen von diesen Kleinigkeiten ist Battle Isle 2 für Fans von Taktikspiele unbedingt die erste Wahl.

Although it is a bit sad that the great two-player mode was dropped in favour of a more classic 'hotseat' approach, Battle Isle 2 is undoubtly a worthy successor to the classic first part. Blue Byte successfully (but carefully) brought the series to a new generation of players who were used to different user interfaces and presentation already. Quite impressive on its own right!

Battle Isle 2 är ett strategispel jag varmt rekommenderar. Den enda negativa kritik jag egentligen har är att spelet kan bli lite segt i de större kampanjerna.

Battle Isle 2 is truly one of the best strategy games of the era, though one of the most difficult ones. If you have tons of free time and like a challenge, you should try defeating Titan Net.
