Beneath a Steel Sky

Det är inte ofta det kommer ut spel på svenska. Oc hdet är sannerligen inte ofta det kommer ut spel av samma kaliber som Beneath a Steel Sky. Så det finns egentligen ingen anledning att inte genast rusa ut och inhandla ett eget exemplar av det. Jag är fullt övertygad om att detta kommer att bli en storsäljare.

Personally, I am a fan of post-apocalyptic stories and games and a reader of Sci-Fi literature. This game forces the player to travel deeper and deeper into the disturbing world of an overpopulated earth: large cities reminiscent of Isaac Asimov's Foundation and beautiful scenes make this game a classic.

All in all the gameplay is not really complicated, the puzzles are challenging, but mostly logical (so you won’t have to look for the craziest possible solution) and you don’t have to fear that every single mistake will end up in a frustrating death. So the gaming experience is superb and this game is defiantly a gem in its own right, capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the best of adventured Sierra or LucasArts ever put on the market!

Rares sont les jeux à proposer des scénarios aussi bien ficelés, et un monde aussi vivant et cohérent. Les décors et les personnages sont vraiment visuellement superbes, ce qui ne gâte vraiment rien ! De plus, l'interface est maîtrisée en environ une minute, et s'avère par la suite d'une souplesse totale. Si vous aimez la SF, l'humour et l'aventure, foncez, vous ne le regretterez pas !

Some of the funniest dialog ever; simple interface; runs entirely off the CD. The difficulty of the puzzles in the final third of the game is disproportionately high. A slick, funny, and absorbing adventure that will appeal to a wide variety of gamers--two thumbs up!

Överhuvudtaget måste det här vara ett av det främsta äventyrsspel som någonsin har kommit från England, och ger allt jänkarna lite konkurens. Om jag har några reservationer så är det att jag tycker att storyn kan vara lite väl intuitiv, men det kan bero på att jag är en gamal äventyrsräv och fick lite hjälp av spelmakarna själva.

Zugegeben, Beneath a Steel Sky hatte im Jahre 1993 hochkarätige Konkurrenten, aber dass das Spiel dermaßen unbeachtet geblieben ist, ist mir dennoch unverständlich. Das Spiel hat nämlich durchaus die Qualitäten, um mit den "ganz großen" wie Day of the Tentacle mitzuhalten. Fans von Blade Runner (Film oder Spiel) werden dieses Spiel sicherlich lieben, und auch die mit Humor verwöhnten LucasArts-Fans kommen hier auf ihre Rechnung. Eine Rundum-Entfehlung für alle, denen simple Musik und grauenhaft pixelige Grafik nichts ausmachen!

Beneath a Steel Sky already brings along all positive characteristics and stylistic elements, which then should be continued in the first two parts of Broken Sword and which have made the series legendary: An exciting, thought out story is told and the interesting puzzles are well integrated into the game. It's a downright pleasure, to follow the subliminal, slightly uncouth humour and quirky word joke, which are abundant, if e.g. our protagonist and his robot friend are bantering.

Kokonaisuutena Beneath The Steel Sky jättää itsestään sekavan kuvan. Toimiva toteutus antaa mahdollisuudet erinomaiseen seikkailuun, mutta monet lapsukset laskevat kiinnostuskäyrää huippulukemista. Tekemistä kyllä riittää ja ongelmat ovat sopivia, mutta tunnelma on aukollinen kuin rikkinäinen säkkikangas. Viihdyttävä kokemus tällaisenakin, mutta parempaan olisi pystytty.

Parfois drôle mais toujours intéressant, voilà un jeu d'aventure bien dosé, à conseiller aux débutants comme aux spécialistes.

Ein bisschen problematisch stellt sich die Frage dar, wie und nach welchen Vergleichssmaßstäben 'Beneath A Steel Sky' heute zu bewerten ist. Das Adventure ist mehr als nur handwerkliche Durchschnittskost. Es bietet Witz, eine spannende Handlung und eine sehr dichte Atmosphäre. Die Grafik ist veraltet, der Sound auch nicht mehr up-to-date. Aber die entscheidende Frage bleibt: Macht es Spaß? Ja es macht Spaß! Zu seiner Zeit hätte das Spiel ausgezeichnete 90 Bewertungspunkte verdient gehabt. Dennoch muss sicherlich auch der Tatsache Rechnung tragen, dass seit Erscheinen bereits 10 Jahre vergangen sind. Deshalb ist eine Bewertung im 80er-Bereich in meinen Augen durchaus angemessen

Overall, Beneath a Steel Sky is an adventure game that stands alone among its peers. It is also a rare example of a commercial game in which the developer has since decided to freely release it to the community years later. While Revolution Software has repeatedly mentioned of a possible sequel to the game, there has not been any official announcement of it so far to date.

In 1948, George Orwell wrote his dystopian masterpiece, 1984, about a society whose citizens were under the constant surveillance of the Thought Police. Decades later, researchers have proved that our reliance on credit and store loyalty cards, mobile phones and computers could allow our day-to-day lives to be monitored in minute detail. The world has become increasingly dependent upon computer technology, but what if this dependency is abused? This is the premise at the heart of Revolution’s 1994 release, Beneath a Steel Sky. Set in a futuristic environment, BASS pushes our fears to their most chilling logical conclusion — a totalitarian society in which humans have become slaves to progress.

PC-würdige Grafik, neue Bedienung, solide Story, spöttischer Humor, deutsche Texte - Beneath a Steel Sky wird Liebhaber von Grafik-Adventures nicht enttäuschen. Grafik und Story haben im Spielverlauf einige kleinere Durchhänger; das Puzzle-Design ist anständig, provoziert aber auch nicht gerade unbeschwerte Euphorie. Ärgerliche Stellen der Dämlichkeits-Klasse gibt es sehr selten, aber ganz ausgerottet wurden sie nicht. Diese Schwächen sind aber keine ernsthaften Spielspaßkiller.

As Rosemary will attest, I am not a huge fan of wise cracking inventory quests (think Gilbert and Monkey Island); but I did rather enjoy my time as Foster. More than that, there are many newer games with infinitely superior graphics and sound that are inferior experiences to this. It's also easy to see the debt that the Broken Sword games owe to Beneath a Steel Sky. On the strength of this game, there should definitely be more such re-releases, and I will certainly try a few more DOS experiences.

Beneath a Steel Sky es una aventura que parte de un argumento de ciencia ficción de la buena y cuyo guión no supo estar a la altura. Tiene muchos fallos, achacables quizá a la poca experiencia de una Revolution recién creada. A pesar de todo y de que te deja con ganas de haberte sumergido más en su mundo, es un juego muy interesante que no se debe condenar al olvido. Y menos ahora que es freeware (también se puede jugar en Linux, por cierto, y la última distribución SUSE lo incluye en su paquete) gracias al buen ojo de sus propios creadores.

The pace of the game can hardly be termed exciting, and this isn't helped by being a little bit too easy for most players. Say the right thing or use the right object, and progress can be quick without too much thought. It's okay while it lasts, but there's better stuff.
