Before this game, the most violent, disgusting, horrible game imagineable was Rise of the Triad. It was meant to be the goriest game ever made. Monolith took a look at ROTT and said, simply, "Watch This!" This is the result of them moving the bar up to 6'11" and clearing it by 70 feet. BLUUUUUUUUUUDDDD is a FPS that camps on B-movie horror films.
Blood has the distinction of being the first game I've reviewed to receive the coveted Adrenaline Vault five-star rating. I know I'm not going to make any friends by saying this, but in my opinion Blood is everything Quake should have been. It offers unparalleled single player gameplay, dozens of beautiful visual effects, tons of new weapons, and killer multiplay. I've had more fun playing Blood in the past day than I have playing any other game in the past year. I waited a very long time for this game, and it was worth every second. And so, on that note, I offer these items to my fellow gamers: one fully charged holoduke, one slightly battered shrinker, and a full box of pipebombs. They can't help me where I'm going.

Blood is the best game to come along (using the Build engine) since Duke Nukem 3D. I'd be pushing it if I said it was better than Duke, but I REALLY do enjoy it a lot more than I do playing Duke 3D these days. It's new and fresh. Well... maybe not fresh, how about stinky and rotten, in the best way possible, considering its content? :-)
It's hard to find fault with Blood, some of the bad guys look too pixelated and the AI is pretty dumb, but all things considered, it's an excellent game with enough differences from the norm to make it stand out from the rest of the first-person games on the market. If you're a horror fan, you will especially appreciate the references and jokes in the game. Bottom Line: Buckets of blood, great level design, and tons of horror references make up one of the better first-person 3D action games to come out in quite some time. If you like games of this type, Blood will make a fine addition to your collection.

Blood is simply one of the greatest first person shooters on the PC. There, I said it. Gory, hilarious and brutally over-the-top.

If you don’t mind getting a few odd looks from neighbors as you cackle along with Caleb at the sight of dozens of monsters and madmen getting blown apart into chunky bits, and have played Duke Nukem 3D to absolute death, give this Build-era game a shot. Duke may have gotten all the glory, but if it’s blood you want and by the gallon then Caleb is your man.

Blood's flaws are easily swept aside when your guns start blasting and the bodies start falling. If you crave a good, violent corridor shooter, this is a great addition to your PC library. It's bloody fun--right down to the last drop.

PC Zone (Aug 13, 2001)
Having said all that, Blood is damn enjoyable to play. Its engine and technology may smack you as being somewhat cheap and nasty in this post-Quake reality, but it does possess a certain charm and a certain smoothness which makes mouse and keyboard manoeuvres both effortless and enjoyable. It's very difficult too - the monsters are relentless, the monks have cat-like reflexes, and some of the gargoyles are stupidly tough. But it contains enough well-designed architecture, enough nice touches, enough secrets, and enough hardware to supply any Fragmeister with at least 20 hours of solid gameplay.

GameSpot (Jun 26, 1997)
But the bottom line is that a ton of blood and clever jokes doesn't make a game fun any more than they make a movie compelling. If Blood relied solely on ultra-violence and nothing else, it would fail just like a bad George Romero or John Woo movie. No, for a first-person shooter to be a winner, it must have a nice arsenal of weapons, a good variety of enemies, well-designed levels, and good graphics. And in almost all those categories, Blood racks up some pretty good marks.
Gamezilla (1997)
If Monolith could have tied the level design and action more closely to a real storyline, worked to smooth the engine a little, and created a few new types of monsters, Blood might have risen another notch or two up the 3D food chain. As it stands, the game is a little too uneven to be successful. There are some redeeming moments of wit and creative level design, but unless you've played all the way through better games like Quake, Eradicator or Outlaws, you may want to try one of them instead.
Despite the quick-draw reflexes of the AI, the tendency to up the difficulty by cramming enemies into small areas, and the crashes and lockups in DOS, BLOOD was still a pretty addition to the family of DOOM-clones.
Power Play (May, 1997)
HonestGamers (Oct 28, 2014)
Your survival depends on immediately switching back and forth between your arsenal for just the right weapon in each situation, scouring the map for all of the secret power-ups, and possibly checking the internet for a list of cheat codes. Don’t worry; I won’t publicly shame you or anything. That’s what Facebook is for. These sorts of hijinks aren’t exactly unexpected coming from a PC shooter of this era, the difficulty simply being as exaggerated as its content – hence in 1997 I would have been playing GoldenEye instead. Horror aficionados should give it a go for all the gooey bits, but veteran space marines will probably find that Blood is exactly their type.
