Centurion: Defender of Rome

Strategy games are rapidly improving in the presentation department these days. Centurion is no exception, containing far more gameplay and lasting appeal than its famous predecessor.

A graphic tour de force, but a historic tour de farce. Chariot racing, gladiatorial combats, and detailed military battles would seem to be the answer to an Emperor's dream. However, its relation to historical verisimilitude might be more accidental than coincidental.

Centurion is a lot of fun to play. If Electronic Arts could drastically improve the speed of the gladiator section and improve the prebattle planning option, it would have a five-star offering on their hands. As it currently stands, the game is certainly worth your time to demo at your favorite retailer.

Schade, ich, als Liebhaber von Monumentalfilmen, hatte mir von der Spielidee mehr erwartet. "Centurion" sieht anfangs auch ganz prächtig aus. Da ist alles vorhanden, was das Römerherz begehrt. Plündern und Rauben, kernige Schlachten zu Wasser und zu Lande, diplomatische Winkelzüge, Arena-Kämpfe und Wagenrennen à la Ben Hur. Besitzer von EGA- und VGA-Karten kommen in den Genuß von mediterraner Farbenpracht. Doch leider, das allein macht noch kein gutes Strategiespiel aus. Bei "Centurion" fehlt mir einfach die Langzeitmotivation. Auch die netten Actionsequenzen helfen da nicht weiter. Spätestens nach der zehnten Wiederholung beginnt das große Gähnen. Man drückt einen Knopf und wartet, bis die Pixel-Legionäre sich gegenseitig abserviert haben.

As it is, Centurion is a mish-mash of game styles that will satisfy no-one.
