[Retest] Still indispensable for armchair warmongers.
With a marvellous scrolling map in CGA cyan and magenta, a friendly control system (after a bit of experimenting) and a built-in timer, this version's a joy to use. The computer players may not be the strongest things ever, but they're at least halfway smart and really spice up three- or four-player games a treat.
PC Magazine (Feb 19, 1985)
One of the greatest benefits of the program is its dutiful housekeeping. The computer will not allow players to type in illegal orders. Also, the resolution of all confrontations is controlled by the computer, freeing players from memorizing and applying movement and combat rules. This feature not only makes Computer Diplomacy easier and more fun to play than the original but makes the game move faster. Still, it is not a lunch-hour game. With the full complement of seven players (the only way to truly experience Diplomacy), you can expect a game to run 6 hours.
A faithful rendition of the classic boardgame, its graphics and computer intelligence are not state-of-the-art. Hopefully, the new edition will return this product to the consumer's forefront.
