Abandonia
The game isn’t too difficult, so I guess even an inexperienced adventurer will be able to finish it, but some parts will require a bit of cranial activity. Most of the game is shown in static screens with some animation. It’s more like going through an interactive book with nice pictures than playing an adrenaline-pumping computer game. Yet that’s exactly what I (and I guess most adventure fans) like about such games.

Adventure Classic Gaming
All in all, if you are interested in trying a fantasy adventure game, it will be difficult to find a title better than Death Gate. It is among the best games ever created by Legend Entertainment. Even if it is not a perfect adaptation of the canon materials, taken on its own it is a rich, epic experience of fantasy fiction. Nevertheless, the puzzles in this game are far less challenging than those in some of the developer’s previous work, so diehard adventure games fans may not feel fully satisfied. For those who may want to both play the game and read the book, I recommend playing the game first. It will make the gaming experience more enjoyable and surprising. The books include a wealth of extra characters and storylines, so reading them after playing the game allows to dive deeper into the mythology, without having regrets of knowing it already too well.

The Good Old Days
A serious Adventure, a very rare species. That alone would make it worthwhile. Death Gate doesn't need this curiosity bonus at all though!

Just Adventure
Death Gate drew me into its story in a much more compelling way than I would have predicted. It strikes me as the kind of story Fable was attempting to be, and failing so miserably. In fact, the story of Fable is so very similar to that of Death Gate that it makes me a bit suspicious ...

DEATH GATE is a fantastic adventure game. A good sound card compliments the playing of this game by enabling you to hear all the dialogues instead of always reading them. The graphics in SVGA mode are comprised of a bundle of animations produced by 3D Studio.

Legend on hiljakseen virittänyt pelirunkoaan yhä enemmän ”haitek”-suuntaiseksi. Kelvon VGA-grafiikan lisäksi onkin valittavissa SVGA-moodi, jolloin liki koko peli esitetään SVGA-grafiikalla. Tällöin DG kipuaa ketterästi ”kauneimmat seikkailuni” kategorian kärkisijoille. Suurin osa kuvista on stillejä, mutta animointiakin on käytetty jonkin verran, erityisesti hahmojen kasvoja elävöittämään.

The puzzles are for the most part logical - some easier than others. I got royally stuck a few times but mainly it was because I forgot something I had previously read or forgot I could cast a spell. You can die so save often. There are also a couple of timed sequences especially at the end - but if you remember to save it's not that bad. There also were no bugs at all - the game played flawlessly on my 450 with W98. All in all this is one terrific game - I'd give it a 9 out of 10.

All Game Guide
Death Gate is mostly a cerebral exercise, designed to involve the gamer in a solid story with logical interaction of objects and it's large cast of interesting and appealing characters. The gorgeous graphical background art and 3-D effects are complemented extremely well by excellent voice acting and a befitting musical score that enhances game play and atmosphere. This shouldn't be news to fans of most Legend Entertainment games. Death Gate is a worthwhile and satisfying gaming adventure.

Quandary
Legend seem to be creating a niche for themselves converting books to games and all criticism of this process aside, Death Gate is perhaps the best of them so far. All in all a very enjoyable fantasy adventure game that made me want to keep playing it from the moment I installed it on my machine.

Power Unlimited

Just Adventure
Of the three games covered in these short articles, Death Gate was the least irritating overall, and the closest to traditional adventuring. If you can put up with the "cute" stuff, you may find this one worth playing.
