Discworld

So to conclude my review, I must say that Discworld is a masterpiece of the adventure genre. A gem like this doesn't come around very often. Not only will it bring a smile to your heart, but you'll want to come back and play it over and over again. Or maybe I just liked it too much. Either way, I give this game a straight, honest-to-goodness 5.

To właśnie, że żyjesz tą grą dzień i noc, a nie kończysz jej znudzony po paru dniach, czyni ze Świata Dysku klasykę na miarę "Monkey Island 1". Grafika nie rzuci nikogo na kolana, nie chodzi jednak o to, żeby każda gra była przełomem jak "Doom" czy "Under a Killing Moon". Graczowi będzie z pewnością nieprzerwanie towarzyszyć uczucie satysfakcji, bo rysunki wieloekranowych lokacji cieszą oko i, co tu owijać w bawełnę są po prostu ładne. Przyczepić się natomiast w „Discworldzie" można na pewno do ścieżki dźwiękowej. Grającej w tle muzyczce bardzo niedaleko do przeciętnego pliku *.mid, nieliczne zaś efekty dźwiękowe niejednokrotnie nie są zsynchronizowane z przypisanymi doń wydarzeniami. Całość trzeba jednak ocenić zdecydowanie pozytywnie, bo mamy do czynienia z jedną z najlepszych przygodówek tego roku!

Discworld is a thoroughly enjoyable game. The first three acts are very strong, providing a good combination of entertainment and challenge, and I particularly liked the gentle parody of the fantasy adventure genre throughout the game. Great fun for all the family, but younger players may need some help with the puzzles. I can't wait for the sequel.

One of the computer games company that always amazed me is Psygnosis. Their ability to surprise me each time with their games has no limits and when I look at press releases and sometimes think that one specific title will have poor chances to appeal to me, I always have it wrong. But the first time I saw screen shots from Discworld and had a chance to read the story behind the game, I knew deep inside that this adventure game would stand as a classic as the King's Quest series.

Die Anhänger dieses schwer angesagten Fantasy-Autoren verbindet ein gemeinsames Glaubensbekenntnis namens Discworld- eine Romanserie, die weltweit als die meistgekaufte ihrer Art gilt. Psygnosis, derzeit produktiv wie kaum ein anderer Hersteller, hat das Epos in ein ulkiges Adventure gepackt. Wir wollten u.a. wissen: Was gibt das Spiel für Nicht-Pratchett-Fans her?

So, in the end, Discworld is highly recommended to anyone with an interest in humorous Adventure games of the chatty type. In typical fashion of the time, the puzzles aren't what keeps the player occupied most of the time. It's rather the dialogues which you'll spend most of your time with. If that appeals to you and if you see something in a sword which goes 'ping', you can't go wrong.

Discworld represents an unique effort to bring the work of fantasy novelist Terry Pratchett onto the computer screen. The game is based on the magical Discworld universe created by Pratchett from which a multitude of paperback novels have been published. With the capability of multimedia CD-ROM technology, the beautiful cartoon look of Discworld is brought to life and enhanced by an impressive ensemble of voice talents, including Eric Idle as the voice of Rincewind. Yet, one should not be fooled by the silly look of Pratchett’s magical world, the game Discworld is by far one of the toughest adventure games ever published. Its devilish and cunningly difficult puzzles will test the patience of even seasoned adventure gamers.

Durch solche Puzzle-Aussetzer und die etwas lieblose Grafik verpaßt Discworld den Sprung in die Spitzengruppe. Liebhaber witziger Adventures und Terry-Pratchett-Leser im besonderen werden trotzdem ihren Spaß an dem Programm haben.

For most people, British humor (or humour) seems to be a love it or hate it proposition. Maybe it's due to the more highbrow nature of the comedy, or maybe it's just that most people wouldn't know a good curry joke if it jumped up and bit them, but in most cases people are either instantly addicted, or they just don't get it at all. And I feel sorry for the latter, because they will never know the simple joys of Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Douglas Adams, and Terry Pratchett, among many others.
