Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty

A darkhorse, as its prequel was strictly a role-playing game. However, this simulation is a wargame par excellance; superb graphics and sound make an enjoyable gaming experience as you take a ruling House in the Dune universe and attempt to achieve dominance. While some of the latter scenarios tend to approach attritional warfare, the overall style and flair of this program cry our for a sequel.

Après le Dune de chez Cryo, Virgin continue sur sa lancée, en proposant Dune 2, développé par Westwoods Studios (Eye of The Beholder 1 et 2, The Legend Of Kyrandia). Dans un genre complètement différent, cette compagnie américaine nous propose un jeu de stratégie tout simplement génial. Entre Civilization de chez Microprose et Sim City de chez Maxis, voici un produit passionnant, qui vous fera évoluer en solo, contre deux autres maisons et l'Empereur lui-même.

Génial ! Dune II est un excellent jeu de stratégie. Même s'il ne fait pas preuve d'une grande originalité, la réalisation est vraiment parfaite.

Ein starker Happen Strategie, der mir persönlich ein bißchen zu hektisch wird. Die Übersicht bleibt allerdings immer durch die optimale Bildschirmaufteilung gewährleistet. Welcher Stratege bekommt da keine Lust ein paar Feinde zu meucheln oder sie in die Falle zu locken?

Während die durch deutsche Sprachausgabe veredelte Soundbegleitung ein echter Genuß ist, bekommt man grafisch außer den schönen Intro- und Zwischenbildern nur gehobenen, aber deftig ruckelnden „Sim City“-Standard geboten. Die Menü-/Maussteuerung und vor allem das enorm motivierende Gameplay sind dafür hervorragend gelungen. Einziger Wermutstropfen: Man ist einfach viel zu schnell mit dem Spiel fertig, wenn man es rund um die Uhr zockt – und das läßt sich in dieser unglaublich packenden Stratego-Wüste kaum vermeiden!

Anyway, overall, the game is amazing for the period in which it came out. It used a lot of new technology, and the developers came up with some great ideas that have become expected from RTS games these days. Unless you’re a masochist, however, I wouldn’t suggest that most people play it now for the first time. Getting used to the archaic command method and limited AI can only bring pain to those raised on games like StarCraft and WarCraft 3. But, hey, some people are into that kind of thing.

Dune 2 ist ein schöner Strategie-Spaß der mittelfristigen Art. Durch ein bißchen mehr Abwechslung und Tiefgang hätte das Spiel bei der Gesamtwertung sogar die 80er-Grenze überschreiten können. Das Programmierteam Westwood muß man sich wirklich merken; die Burschen haben sowohl bei Strategie-, als auch bei Abenteuer- und Rollenspielen ein glückliches Händchen.

Dune II is a masterpiece for its time. It didn't popularize the RTS genre simply for being first, it did so because it did the concept surprisingly well. Unfortunately, while the gameplay is timeless, the interface and the AI are not. These issues alone, coupled with the fact that RTSs really haven't changed all that much since this game's release, limit this recommendation to RTS fanatics and the curious. Later games are far more streamlined, but even with its faults, its still an excellent way to put Dune to a game, and a fitting start to a new weekend General genre.

Der Schreck über das erste Dune-Spiel saß noch tief in den Knochen, als der zweiter Teil in der Redaktion eintrudelte. Das Vorurteil war unbegründet. Glücklicherweise zeigten die amerikanischen Programmier-Kollegen von „Westwood Studios“ ein glücklicheres Händchen als die Exxos-Designer. Sowohl technisch als auch spielerisch macht Dune 2 eine gute Figur.
