Fantasy General

Die Fantasy-Variante erweitert die Grundidee von Panzer General beträchtlich. Helden, Zaubersprüche, Forschung und Arena zeigen, was in dem Spielsystem steckt. Netterweise hat man die nutzlosen Kampf-Filmchen weggelassen und statt dessen schönere Einheiten-Icons eingebaut. Zwei Dinge nerven jedoch: Bei der Kampagne darf man zwar die nächste Schlacht auswählen, doch deren Beschreibung sieht man erst nach der Wahl - weshalb wird dann nicht gleich gewürfelt? Außerdem ist der Mehrspielermodus so enttäuschend wie beim ersten Teil.

In its long tradition of developing strategy and role-playing games, S.S.I. acquired a formidable experience throughout the years, which translated into the creation of the Five-Star Series. "Panzer General" and "Allied General", the first two titles to be published in this series, both show perfectly what S.S.I. meant by their new label, synonym of quality and excellence.

Overall I was truly impressed with this game and, to be frank, the depth far outweighs any modern RTS game. Fantasy General will be on my hard-drive for a long time to come.

S.S.I. has a long history of producing excellent RPGs and wargames, but their latest title in the Five-Star Series, Fantasy General, is a strange hybrid that combines the most unsavory elements of both. Backed by some sharp, if lifeless, visuals and a soundtrack that's designed to keep ‘em rockin' in the cathedrals with out-of-place pipe-organ and sopranic arias, Fantasy General seems aimed at a bizarre and very unlikely audience.
