IndyCar Racing II

Stunning graphics and sound; very detailed car physics. The replay mode is really excellent. You'll still need a fast Pentium to enjoy the SVGA graphics mode. Racing simulations don't get any better than this.

This is, as you haved guessed, the enhanced version of IndyCar Racing. If you have never heard of it, this game is a very realistic racing simulation of the Indycar '95 season, including all the drivers, cars and bodywork layouts, and tracks of the past season. You can choose among fifteen different tracks, some to your liking, others maybe less, but that is what the season is made of. Very different tracks indeed! For example I'm a big fan of Laguna Seca, it's a great track with lots of banked curves and many overtaking possibilities. The Loudon in New Hampshire is a classic oval track bordered by a wall, but is in fact quite easy. The Cleveland race takes place on a track designed on a airfield. This was my first time on such a track. No banked curves, no walls to guide you, and nowhere to go, it is in fact very hard and surprising. It is important on any other track that you know where you are and where you are going.

Auf jeden Fall sollten Sie das Angebot der Programmierer nutzen, mit diversen Optionen den Schwierigkeitsgrad tüchtig zu senken. Selbst bei Aktivierung aller Schummeloptionen ist die Pole Position nur mit höchster Konzentration zu erreichen. Einsteiger sollten besser erst einmal intensiv mit dem Vorgänger oder NASCAR Racing üben; für Profis ist Indy Car 2 dagegen eine reizbolle Herausforderung.

Indy Car II est un soft qui ravira ceux qui avaient adoré le premier volet, ceux pour qui course est synonyme de simulation. Les autres n'auront qu'à se rabattre sur Screamer !

Papyrus hat von seinen Erfahrungen mit NASCAR Racing einiges gelernt: die Steuerung ist nun wesentlich exakter, die Fahrzeuge liegen satt auf der Piste, und durch den vernünftigen Verzicht auf grafische Details ist nun auch der SVGA-Modus wirklich rasant. Für ein Action-Rennspiel ist das Gebotene zu wenig, wer eine reinrassige Simulation sucht, ist mit IndyCar Racing 2 bestens bedient.

Indy Car 2 heeft veel vooruitgang geboekt t.o.v. zijn kleine broertje. Deze keer zijn ze toch beleefd genoeg om in een keer alle 15 circuits mee te leveren (dus geen datadisk deze maal). Voor amateur racers is Indy Car 2 eigenlijk iets te moeilijk. Voor al wie zich enkel occasioneel eens op een computer circuit waagt, zou ik zeggen: wacht op Grand Prix 2, die heeft hoogstwaarschijnlijk meer ´hulpmiddelen´ voor minder getalenteerde racers. Voor de echte race-freaks is ICR2 echter een pareltje, waar ze vele uren aan zullen spenderen om een optimale wagenafstelling te bekomen en er daarna mee in het strijdperk te treden...

IndyCar 2 is quite a lot of fun, especially against human opponents. There will be better race sims, better race games, possibly even in the not too distant future, but for the intended audience and niche, IndyCar 2 performs admirably. The strong points of this game tend to at least balance with the weak ones, so while I can't give this second incarnation of IndyCar an unequivocable thumbs up, I would give it an 80 out of 100 -- buy it if you want a great model of Indy car racing, but approach with some caution if you just want a slick, pretty racing game.

In summary, IndyCar II will certainly appeal to diehard racing enthusiasts, and to this group I will heartily recommend this product. Be warned, however: most casual gamers will find IndyCar II simply too difficult to be fun,
