Leisure Suit Larry 1: In the Land of the Lounge Lizards

Leisure Suit Larry was created together with Police Quest 1, as a new addition to the adventure genre. In 1991 Sierra launched a remake of Leisure Suit Larry 1. The game was in desperate need of some VGA assistance. There is not much more to say about the first Larry game. It was meant as an introduction to the "quest" game style, although it is very different from the other three series (King's Quest, Space Quest & Police Quest). Have fun with this big VGA gem.

As Larry travels around in Lost Wages by cab or on foot, you will find a rich and humorous story that will surely keep your attention. Larry gets to meet a lot of beautiful women in this game, though not many (if any) pay much loving attention to him. There is a lot of hidden humor that can easily be missed. This is a rather short game. When you are stuck at a dead end, you can always save and reload to restart, and the “climactic” ending at the end will definitely leave you wanting for more.

Make no mistake, Lounge Lizards VGA is a fun game, but much like Quest for Glory its source material holds up a lot better than that of the other remakes. Your enjoyment level is pretty much going to boil down to whether you prefer Sierra's classic EGA adventures or their later point & click offerings.

Die Grafiker und Programmierer zeigen, was man mit Liebe zum Detail und Elan aus dem angegrauten Schwerenöter Larry machen kann. Comicartige Animationen sorgen für Heiterkeit, die Musik nudelt nicht mehr megahertzgetaktet gerunter; der ganze Kerl wirkt smarter und witziger denn je. Das Spiel selbst wurde gottlob nicht geändert; Leftys Bar steht immer noch, "Ken Sent me" ist immer noch das Paßwort und das Kondom gibt's immer noch im Drugstore.

All this would normally add up to nothing more than a low brow distraction or worse, a Japanese dating sim. The premise, however, is rescued expertly by the wit of Al Lowe who injects so much humor into the world of his loveable loser that you can't help but root for him as you laugh at his latest failure. Larry's failure, that is, not Al's.

Das etwas schlüpfrige Thema und der damit verbundene weniger subtile Humor der Larry Spiele ist sicher nicht für jeden geeignet. Manche Leute werden das Spiel wohl nur im dunklen Kämmerlein spielen oder nicht mal mit der Kneifzange anfassen wollen. Trotzdem macht Larry, besonders in der VGA Version, viel Spaß und bietet kurzweilige Unterhaltung. Leider ist das Spiel aber auch sehr kurz und kann locker in ein paar Stunden durchgespielt werden. Zudem fällt negativ auf, dass man in Sackgassen geraten oder sterben und dann nur noch auf seine gespeicherten Spielstände zurückgreifen kann. Im schlimmsten Fall muss man so also alles noch einmal durchspielen, um das Spiel erfolgreich zu beenden. Eine Option, die den Spieler direkt vor seinen Tod zurückgebracht hätte, wäre wünschenswert gewesen. Alles in allem bleibt ein Spiel mit einigen Schwächen, das aber schon alleine aufgrund seines Kultstatus einen Blick wert ist.

All in all, this game is a classic in the adventure game genre, and deserves to be so. But if you really want to experience this game in all of its glory, be on the lookout for the VGA remake, created in the SCI engine with 256 colors and point & click interface, and find out why people are clamoring for the new entry in the series later this year.

El mérito de este juego es indudable, aún así el remake podría haberse explayado más en cuanto a duración, en lugar de limitarse a reconvertir los gráficos y la interfaz del primero.
