MechWarrior 2-Mercenaries is a top of the line combat simulator which should not be passed up by anyone who isn't afraid of multiple commands and options...

But the AI enhancements alone make Mercenaries a must-own for MW2 veterans. The breadth of gameplay options and variety make it a must-try for Mech newbies. So what are you waiting for, MechWarrior? Fame and fortune await.

MECHWARRIOR 2: MERCENARIES delivers significant improvements over MECH 2 and CBL, while retaining the high-energy action that made those games great. The improvements aren't just visual, but include new features that greatly enhance the gameplay – and game replay – value of this product.

It's certainly another MechWarrior game, but this time there's a healthy bit of cynicism about it. MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries may have three levels of difficulty to gently ease you into the action, but even at the easiest setting, you still need to be pretty darned quick with the multiple button pressing, joystick and/or mouse twiddling and keyboard whacking. Either that, or pretty quick with the Load Saved Game button.

In the dry desert on Draconis IV, a slight ripple in the sand caused the scorpions to stir, scurrying for any small hills and dunes they could hide their invertebrate bodies in. In the distance, a small Commando Mech, both arms shot off and spraying lethal gasses from its crippled engines ran for its life.

Ich hätte es ja nicht für möglich gehalten, aber Activision hat die Schwierigkeitsschraube doch noch mal ein bißchen weiter angezogen. Waren schon bei „Ghost Bears Legacy“ einige Missionen an der Grenze des Machbaren, geht der Mech-Söldnerverein hin und wieder noch einen Schritt weiter. Trotz allem lassen sich alle Missionen mit einer kleinen Portion Glück lösen. Manchmal bedarf es nur eines anderen Waffencocktails, damit die Welt wieder viel freundlicher aussieht. Am Szenario läßt sich nichts mäkeln, endlich fühlt man sich wie die Halden aus den guten Battletech-Romanen. Daß dabei die Clans auf der gegnerischen Seite stehen und bekämpft werden, muß leider in Kauf genommen werden. Ein besserer Mechsimulator ist zur Zeit nicht in Sicht. Also, anheuern und auf in den Kampf.

Im großen und ganzen hat Mercenaries seine Schwachstellen, sieht jedoch toll aus, hört sich prima an und läßt sich super spielen. Die Story könnte etwas vielseitiger sein und ein offenes Ende haben. Auf der Seite des Spiels an sich hätte man auch einiges mehr machen können, aber Activision stand unter Druck mit dem Release-Datum und mußte das Spiel samt Bugs und anderen Problemen auf den Markt bringen. Na ja, es hätte schlimmer kommen können. Es ist ein guter neuer Mechwarrior-Titel von den Experten und dürfte bis auf weiteres der beste Mech sein.

In the end, there's an awful lot to like about MechWarrior: Mercenaries, and those who liked the first two games are in for a real treat when they open the shrink wrap on this follow-up. All new AI, an amazing network play system that allows players to host their own multiplayer games over the Internet, and some really great pre-made missions ensure that the game is almost certain to appeal to any fan of action or simulation games.

Puh, das ist aber wirklich schwer. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad von MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries ist trotz dreifacher Staffelung, wahrlich nicht von Pappe. Spätestens wenn die Clans auftauchen, will jeder teure Schuß gut überlegt sein. Die "Feuer frei"-Mentalität des Vorgängers sollte man schnellstens ablegen, um nicht vorzeitig bankrott zu gehen. Doch das steigert die Motivation eines echten Mechpiloten erst.

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries is a great addition to anyone’s game library, and an absolute must for fans of giant robot simulations. It’s true that Mercenaries never really received the kind of hype and fanfare that proceeded Mechwarrior 2, but that in no way says anything about the quality of the title’s gameplay. Mercenaries is visually spectacular, and loads of fun to play. It offers gamers something more than just mindless shoot-em-up action, and managing your fledgling company’s finances is almost a game unto itself. Honor is fine, but it doesn’t pay the bills. Show me the money!

Trots den professionella framtoningen på spelet märker man så småningom att Mercenaries saknar de rätta uppdragen och de rätta möjligheterna för att det ska vara ett riktigt bra spel.
