Path A: Tex is seen brushing his teeth. While he is doing that, Chelsee pops into the office and starts messing up his stuff. Tex sees Chelsee, and the two of them start talking about their relationship and Phoenix. Feel free to use any conversation response while talking, just don't choose "Total slam" or "Not interested in love" when they appear as choices. If you do, Chelsee will leave the office right away.
Tex notes that he needs to do something with that untranslated letter, as well as the note scraps that Emily gave him the night before. Let's deal with those note scraps first. When you gain control, examine the note scraps and assemble them, reading how you can control each piece at the bottom. The note should look like this. When you are done with that, look near the front door and get the mail laying on the floor. Examine the prize letter and you will put $100 in Tex's pockets. (This item only appears if you mailed the crossword on Day One.) Leave the office and go into Rook's Pawnshop.
Rook is still in his cheery self. Select any dialogue response, then ask about the Yucatec Language. Looks like Rook has a book on Yucatec called Yucatec Made Easy. Pay $30 for it. Combine Yucatec Made Easy book with the untranslated letter, then examine the translated Yucatec letter. Bring up your travel map, select the North America section, and travel to the cabin.
The cabin belongs to David Wright, according to the note from Malloy's apartment. There seemed to be a struggle here. Papers are scattered on the floor and a chair is knocked over. Get the crumpled page near the tree in the corner, and examine it. It is the "Puzzle of the Month" contributed by someone named A.E., and it gives directions to solve the CD puzzle that you face later. When you are done, get the CD from the open drawer in the end table. Climb the stairs and move the painting beside the door. Look at the security keypad. It is a 4-by-4 grid that contain squares. Travel to Tex's computer room.
Insert the CD that you got from the cabin into Tex's laptop computer. A 4-by-4 grid similar to the keypad's appears on the left, as well as four different colored tiles on the right. Fill the grid with the squares according to this. Once you have done that, the combination to Wright's security keypad appears. If you are a good drawer, make note of it. Otherwise, go here. There are also two buttons labeled Next and Exit. Click on Next and read the various notes, articles, and excerpts. When you are finished, click Exit and return to the cabin.
Climb up the stairs again and move the keypad to get a close-up view, then enter the combination to gain access to Wright's Projection Room. Inside, move the loose floorboards to see what's left of David Wright. It seems that someone came in here and demanded Wright to tell him Malloy's whereabouts. When he refused to do so, he was murdered and hidden under the floorboards so that nobody could find him easily. Pull down the movie screen on the back. There is a cabinet next to it. Open the door on the left and get the 16mm roll of film that you see here. Insert this into the movie projector, and turn it on. You will see a short film which shows a live alien being operated on by military personnel. You're done at Wright's cabin, so travel to the Police Station on your San Francisco map.
Talk to Mac Malden using any conversation path until you get you Offer/Ask About list. Offer Mac Emily's threatening note to be told that the note looks like the work of the Black Arrow Killer. Leave Mac and travel to the Brew & Stew on your Chandler Avenue map. Inside, Louis informs Tex of Chelsee's departure. Talk to him more until you can ask about the Black Arrow Killer. Louie says that the Bay City Mirror is covering the story. Ask Louie about the Bay City Mirror to be told that Rook throws out his old copies of the Bay City Mirror. You may have luck in one of the trashcan in the alley. End the conversation to end up back in the street.
Head into the alley behind Rook's Pawnshop. There is a trash can sitting just to the right of the drain spout on the brick wall. Open it and take out the newspaper. Examine it and read the article on the Black Arrow Killer by Lucia Pernell, who gets added to your Ask About list. Open the back door to Rook's and enter. Ask Rook about Pernell to receive her business card. Return to Tex's office and go to your desk. Examine Pernell's business card to add her number to Tex's vidphone directory. Turn on the vidphone and select Lucia Pernell from the list, then click Dial.
Open your conversation with Pernell by choosing response C: Straight to the point. (This adds one good guy point for Path A.) From here, choose responses A, B, A to arrange a meeting with Pernell at the Brew & Stew. Leave the vidphone by clicking the Exit button. Travel to the Brew & Stew.
Watch the long cut-scene where the Black Arrow Killer is discussed and the NSA's involvement. After his meeting with Pernell, Tex returns to his office to see someone suspicious on the roof of Rusty's Fun House. Go down into the street and go toward Rusty's. Look at the front door to discover a cop lock on it. Travel to the Police Station.
There, ask Mac about Rusty's Fun House and Rusty's Key to receive the key. End the conversation and return to the street on Chandler Avenue. Go to Rusty's and use the key on the door. The Cop Lock Interface appears. Listen to Tex's instructions on what to do in order to deactivate the cop lock. As always, here is the solution if you get stuck. After you deactivated the cop lock, Rusty's door opens. No clown laugh is heard this time.
Go to where the shelves are and crawl. There should be a pedal on the floor between the two shelves. Move the pedal and a secret door will open. Climb the only ladder here that leads up to the roof. Once you are on the roof, look at the water tower to discover that it is secured by a Meister Lock padlock. The person that you saw from your office has gone to do something, but he left his jacket behind on the cooling unit. Pick it up and examine it. Tex will search the jacket and find a cufflink and some photograph scraps. Examine the cufflink. It has the initials DH engraved on it. Examine the scraps and assemble them, making sure to flip a scrap the same way you did for Emily's note.
Once assembled, the photograph shows the front entrance to Autotech, which was mentioned in your meeting with Pernell. You do not know its whereabouts at this time. Go back down into the street and head into the Electronics shop. It has a new proprietor named Zack Williams, who is a no-nonsense guy. As soon as Tex walks in, Zack checks him out and discovers that Tex's bill is overdue. For this, Zack zaps his credit card and tells Tex that everything is cash only. Use any conversation path until you get the opportunity to pay the $1,230 you owe. (no stalling, no complaining.) You should get control of the game again.
Look at the displays. There are two things that you can buy now. One is the Visual Analyzing Apparatus (V.A.A.) (Tex calls it a photo analyzer), and the other is the Robco battery pack. Talk to Zack again and buy both of them. End the conversation with Zack. Combine the assembled photograph with the V.A.A. Examine the V.A.A. and photograph to get a close-up view of it. Turn on the device and the photo is ready to be analyzed. Click on the street sign at the far left of the photo to select an area to magnify, then click on the "Zoom +" button for a close-up of that area. You will see the name on the sign. Click the "Zoom -" button to return where you started, click on the front door just below the Autotech sign to get the street number. So Tex recognizes the address as 144 Barcelona. Autotech is added to your San Francisco travel map. Return to Tex's office.
Use the vidphone to dial Lucia Pernell. Ask her about Sandra Collins and Pernell will give Tex the address. End the conversation and click the Exit button. Go to your San Francisco travel map, and go to Sandra Collins' House. There, open the drawer in the nightstand next to the bed and get the resume, then examine it. Get the Autotech security card on the floor near the sewing table. Travel to Autotech on your San Francisco travel map.
You arrive at the lobby of Autotech. Get the hairbrush from the coffee table, and the curtain cord hanging from the blinds. Get the visitor's pass from the floor near the two chairs, then examine it. Take a note of the number you see on it. Now open the sliding window to the reception area, and move Tex around until you can see the clipboard on the desk. Look at the clipboard. Combine the hairbrush and the curtain cord. Use the brush-with-cord on the clipboard to get it. Examine the clipboard and note down the access code that corresponds with the number from the visitor's pass. Go toward the security door and look at the keypad/scanner next to it. Use the visitor's pass on the keypad/scanner to bring a close-up view of it. Enter the access code and click on Enter when done. Go through the door.
It is not safe to hang around the hallway, because occasionally, a security guard will patrol the hallway. If he spots Tex, the game will end. So you must do things as quickly as possible. If you want to deal with him straight away, look here.
Find the door to Dag Horton's office and look at the nameplate to add Dag Horton's name to your Ask About list. Unlike the first door you came across, this one does not require a visitor pass or code, so just open the door and enter.
Go to the bookcase near the door and get the key sitting on top of it. Examine it to discover that it is a Meister Lock padlock key. With this baby, you should be able to gain access to that water tower. Go to Horton's desk and move the book. Get the sticky notes and examine them to add Gary Lee to your Ask About list. Now open the CD player and get the file cabinet key from inside. Open the bottom desk drawer and get the necklace. Examine the necklace. It belongs to Sandra Collins. Go over to the file cabinets and use the file cabinet key on the one on the right. Open the drawer and get the Llama matchbook tin. Examine it to get some surveillance photos. Examine the surveillance photos. Two girls are featured in the photos. One is Emily and the other must be Sandra Collins. Travel to the Brew & Stew on Chandler Avenue.
Louie asks you about that reporter that you were hanging around with. Follow any conversation path with him until you get the Offer/Ask About list. Ask Louie about Gary Lee. He goes by the name of Crazy Gary, and he can often be found in the alley. Let's go there.
As soon as you enter the alley, you should hear a voice. Follow that voice and you should meet Crazy Gary. Talk to him until you find out what "blessed potation" Gary wants for information, a fine, single-malt scotch. Leave the alley and go around the side of the Slice O' Heaven, now out of business. Open the door marked "Exit" and enter. Climb the stairs and go to the end of the passage where there are boxes. Move the top box on the left and then open the box underneath. Remove the bottle of scotch there and return to Gary. Talk to him and select A: Make a donation. Offer Gary the bottle of scotch and he will now be happy to answer questions. Ask Gary about Dag Horton and the newspaper photo of Malloy. Ask about Malloy's key to receive it. Exit the alley and go into the Fun House.
Go into the secret passage and climb the ladder to get onto the roof. Now you have the Meister Lock padlock key handy, go ahead and enter. When you get inside, turn on the viewing device.
This triggers a cut-scene where Tex notices someone inside Emily's apartment. He rushes down into the street and heads toward the Flamingo. Emily goes up to her room, only to get attacked by the Black Arrow Killer. Before Tex can enter the Flamingo, he bumps into Gus Leach. Tex explains that there is someone up in Emily's room and that she is in danger. If you're playing the game on Path A, Leach lets Tex pass and he is able to save Emily's life. On Path C, Tex tries to explain but Leach doesn't buy it, and Emily gets killed. The cut-scene ends with Tex looking for the Black Arrow Killer.
The first thing that you should do is go to Rook's Pawnshop and talk to Rook, who says that he heard some footsteps up on Rusty's roof. Leave Rook and go back up to the roof. Save your game at this point. Hold the [Ctrl] key down as you make your way toward the stairs. The Black Arrow Killer is here, looking occasionally in your direction. Tex gets shot if he is seen. Proceed down the stairs and hide behind the cooling unit. Rise up carefully and peak over the top of the cooling unit. Wait for the Killer to face you. As soon as he turns away from you, run toward him.
Tex and the Killer struggle on the rooftop for a bit. A moment later, a Black Avatar speeder appears and watches the action unfold. Some device falls to the ground during the struggle, and Tex is able to throw the Killer off the roof.
