As with all Sierra's recent adventures, the parser can deal with most likely inputs, and interaction is very good. The car is tricky to control at first and the sound lets the game down slightly, but Police Quest is a large adventure with more than one solution and should keep even hardened text-only-adventure-players amused and involved for quite some time.
Adventure's Planet
The DOS Spirit
Many elements of this first game were based on actual experiences Walls had, while on the force. The evolving mystery of The Death Angel was particularly gripping, true-to-life or not. An amusing Sierra classic...
Adventure Classic Gaming
It is enjoyable to play an old classic such as this game that is partly reality based. The VGA remake boasts better graphics and enhances the player’s immersion into the daily danger of police work. Overall, Police Quest: In Pursuit of the Death Angel is a good police story and a well paced adventure game that keeps the player’s mind working and challenged.
Adventure Gamers
Police Quest 1 is a delightful throwback for nostalgia nerds, to a time when this sort of dramatic content was new ground for games and an adventure could make a kid want to be a police officer when he grows up. Twenty years later, both the original and the remake are still fun and easy to play, and required playing for adventure game historians.
Just Games Retro
I watched a video of the “Making of Police Quest” where Ken Williams made the claim that this game was used as a training simulator in police stations. I can’t see how. The story, in terms of realism, is a step above the complete fantasy of King’s Quest, and an attempt at requiring procedure and showing the consequences of ignoring it is undeniably present. However, the game has about as much use in preparing you to be a policeman as The Oregon Trail has in preparing you to set off from Independence, Missouri in a wagon. If you’re expecting a game that plays exactly like the other Sierra Quests, but with a little more grounding in reality, you’ve got the right idea. It’s certainly a fun adventure, satisfying if you want to play as a street cop/temporary detective, and probably about as tedious (in terms of simulating procedure) as any casual gamer would want it to get.
