I truly wish everyone could have had the same experience that I had with the game, and how it really did change my life. I played this game more than any game past or present. Many newbies might call me 86 and outdated, but so be it. Just remember youngin's, when you play your fancy new FPS, you would never have it without the birth of Quake.

If Quake were a painting, it would be the Mona Lisa. If it were a car, it would be a Rolls-Royce. Or, to put it in the terms of modern parlance, Quake rocks!

Much more could be said of Quake, but I'll leave the rest for you to discover. The hype surounding this game has been almost unbearable, but in the end, Quake deserves every bit of advance - and until now, unverifiable - praise it has received. If you're into action games, and even if you're not, you should be playing Quake right now - it's as good as PC gaming gets.

Just Games Retro
Quake's great fun and the forefather of modern 3D shooters. At the time, it maintained enough FPS conventions to be familiar, but also showed off its new effects well enough to herald the start of a new era. Looking back at it, there's still enjoyment to be had, but the lack of a story or absolutely breathtaking levels leaves just the standard "shoot everything that moves" gameplay that's little different and less advanced than today's shooters. Its step backward in color and level detail also gave "2.5-D" games like Duke 3D a brief chance to hold on, but the 3D revolution was coming, and Quake certainly deserved to lead the way.

First, the game's graphics have more depth: Its dank corridors, twisty labyrinths, and shaky bridges over lethal rivers of flame give you the uncanny feeling of being trapped in a textured, sharp-cornered nightmare, rather than in the flattened-out hallucinations of Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Second, the under-your-skin sound effects and ambient music on the $50 disc were composed by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, who's been known to ponder a few issues concerning sex, violence, and gruesome death. And third, on a simple cost-per-kill basis, Quake is the most cathartic experience you can legally have within the confines of your own home, as you blow away vicious dogs, brutish ogres, and armed-to-the-teeth enemy infantrymen (although, unlike Doom, you can't paste your spouse's face onto a demon's body). It may not be healthy — heck, it may not even be normal — but it is a lot of fun.

Kingdom of Desire

This is a good game, but not great. As far as the Quake/Duke Nukem 3D argument goes, put me down for Duke. When it comes right down to it, Duke was just more fun. The levels looked like something, some of them even recognizable somethings. The weapons were more innovative and there were offensive items as well. But I'm not reviewing Duke in this space. Bottom Line: GREAT game engine and soundtrack. Almost everything else is not quite up to the task. If you're a fan of this type of game, buy it, you'll like it. If you have to make a choice between Quake and Duke, go for Duke.

Shooterplanet

Coming Soon Magazine
ID certainly has come a long way from the good ole' Commander Keen days. Every product that they produce always seems to be a big step ahead of their previous releases. I'm sure that many people have heard of Castle Wolfenstein 3D, but I don't think that many people have played it. Essentially it was a much cruder version of Doom. It was one of the first games that offered high speed, real 3D like movement. They borrowed the plot from the original Castle Wolfenstein game (for the Apple IIe) and pumped up the action. All you had to do was kill everything, get ammo and get out. It was simple, but effective.
