Walkthrough - SCI Version onlyContributed by Black Wolf (37242) on Jan 01, 2006.

Space Quest I: Roger Wilco in the Sarien Encounter is a remake of the original Space Quest. You star as Roger Wilco, a janitor on-board the spaceship Arcada. You have just discovered a race known as the Sariens has invaded your ship and have stolen the Star Generator., but not before setting the self-destruct sequence. Roger now has 15 minutes to escape the ship.

Walk west and wait until a scientist appears and collapses on the floor. (You may have to leave the screen and re-enter.) Talk to him. He says that you must leave the ship and give you the name of the cartridge you must retrieve. Write the name down. Now use the computer and look in your game documentation for the code that corresponds with the name of the cartridge that the scientist said to you. When you are done with this, retrieve the cartridge and walk west (x2). Search the dead body to find a keycard.

Note: When you are walking around the corridors, Sariens will search them for any intruders. If you see a dialog box telling you that some footsteps are approaching, quickly enter a nearby elevator or go into another room. They will appear, search the area, and go back the way they came. When the Sariens see you, they won't hesitate to shoot.

Walk east and use the elevator to go to the floor below, and go through the open doorway to enter the observation room. Near one of the bodies, there is a piece that belongs to the broken Star Generator. Pick this up and leave the room. Go east until you see a yellow-and-black elevator. Enter this elevator to get into the control room. Go east.

Note: Even you can't get away from those bloody Sariens in the control room. If you still hear footsteps approaching, hide behind the joystick. Alternatively, you can turn up the speed, and go east while staying near the bottom of the screen.

Look by the door for two buttons. Look at them and push the one that opens the bay doors. Insert the keycard into the slot next to the door to open it. In the next screen, open the closet on the left wall to find a space suit. Wear it, then open the drawer underneath and take the gadget. Open the huge door to go into the airlock. Enter the pod, then buckle your seatbelt. Press the power button and use the joystick to get clear of the Arcada. Push the AutoNav button.

Note: If you push the middle button, the one that says “don't push”, you will crash-land to a scene out of Robin Hood: Conquest of the Longbow, another fine Sierra game available from your local computer store. You will also end the game. Feel free to try it, but save your game first.

The AutoNav tells you that you are on your way to the planet Kerona. When you crash-land there, unbuckle your seatbelt (you will automatically get out) and get the survival kit inside the door of the pod. Take the piece of glass laying on the ground and go east to get to the ruins.

Note: While exploring the ruins, you are likely to get thirsty, and some dialog boxes tell you so. If you don't, you'll die of dehydration. If you have a fast computer, you'll have no chance of surviving as you'll immediately die of thirst as soon as you enter the ruins. May I suggest that you either disable your CPU's L2 cache in your BIOS or use a slow-down program such as DOSBox to fix this.

On the surface, you find a purple plant laying beside some rocks. Take the plant, then continue east until you see a part of a vertebrae, and walk up the path of it that leads up. The Sariens must have found out that you got away in a pod because they have sent their spider droid to sort you out. Once the droid drops on the surface, its primary objective is to hunt you down and explode when you are within its range. When you get down from the vertebrae, he will follow you. Don't worry, he won't climb the vertebrae, but you'll deal with him later. Continue along the vertebrae until you see a bridge. To the south, there is a piece of bone protruding upwards, go behind it, ad when the droid gets underneath, push the bone and it will crush the droid. Continue along the vertebrae until you see a plate. Walk onto this. An elevator will drop you down to an underground cave.

Take the stalagmite here, and if you didn't get the purple plant earlier, then get the plant underneath it. Walk to the next screen, and you will see a grate on the floor. Approach it. Before you can cross, a monster appears and releases its tentacles out of the grate. Use the plant on the grate. The monster will eat it, and you can safely cross. Walk to the next screen. You will see a closed door with no handle, and you have to find some way to open it. Place the stalagmite on the geyser, and it will open. Enter the open doorway to see laser beams blocking the way. Use the glass on the beams and they will short-circuit. Continue to the next screen. Acid is dripping from the ceiling. Save your game, increase your speed, and try to stay clear of the little holes and get to the other side. If you die, just restore the game. Turn on your gadget and proceed east. A large holographic image of an alien appears before you, explains why he is here and promises to provide transport if you destroy a monster called Orat and bring back his remains for proof, then chucks you back onto the surface.

Note: If you did not turn on the gadget prior to entering the holographic room, the alien will speak in gibberish, and you will not understand what he asks you to do.

Go east until you find the tail of the vertebrae, go north, and enter the skull (make sure that the droid is following you). Immediately hide behind the rock near the entrance. The droid approaches the Orat, and explodes on impact.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION: If you've already crushed the droid earlier, then throw the water canister at the Orat. He will swallow it, then explode.

Take the Orat's guts then walk your way back to the holographic room. Show the guts to the alien, and you will be taken to the docking bay, where an odd-looking alien provides you with transport to get to Ulence Flats. You will find the skimmer in the room, along with a computer. After the alien finishes speaking to you, insert the cartridge into the computer's slot, then write down the self-destruct code for the Star Generator. Get in the skimmer and you will be taken to an arcade sequence. You can have a go at the sequence, or skip it altogether. If you decide to play it, the object is to drive north while avoiding several rocks, both large and small. You can only crash into small rocks five times before your skimmer is damaged. If you crash into the large rocks, that's it, game over! When you have traveled enough distance, you arrive at Ulence Flats, Kerona's only settlement.

Once you get out, a strange dude with a hat will approach you, and offer to buy your skimmer for 25 buckazoids. Refuse the offer.

Note: On this screen, you may see a little furry guy come out and tell you to follow him behind the bar. Don't do it. You will get mugged if you do.

After he goes, take the keys from your skimmer's dashboard and walk behind the bar. Search the pile of dust on the ground to find 10 or 12 buckazoids. Go back west and the dude should return, offering you 30 buckazoids and a jetpack for your skimmer. This time, accept the offer. Not only do you get the money and the jetpack, you also receive two coupons: one for the bar, and the other for Droids-B-Us. He leaves a happy man, never to bug you again. Enter the bar

Hip place, this. Use the Slots-O-Death on the right and insert as many buckazoids you want to bed (maximum is three per game). Play until you win 320 buckazoids and the machine overheats. If you win, save the game. Restore, if you lose. This is important as you may end up winning three death skulls. After which point, the laser mounted on the ceiling will blast a hole in you.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION: The widget from the Arcada can be used to rig the Slots-O-Death machine. Now Roger can't lose a game, and not risk having three death skulls.

Once you have the buckazoids, quit the game and head over to the bar. Sit down on the empty stool and use the bar coupon to order some beer, then drink it. Do this three times. You'll overhear a conversation. Write down the sector that is mentioned, and leave the bar. Go west to Tiny's Used Spaceships, and wait until Tiny stops talking to you. Walk up to the rocket ship. After Tiny tells you about the ship, buy it from him.

Note: If you buy the blue ship from Tiny from the screen below, this saves you money as it will malfunction and you will receive a “70$ discount”, but since Tiny didn't do his math for a while, you get a little more of a discount.

Now go east to Droids-B-US, and enter. Gives the Droids-B-Us coupon to the salesbug to be entitled to a 20% discount. Wait until the NAV-2001 appears on the screen, then give the buckazoids to the dealer. Leave and go west to the Droids-B-Us pick-up area. Your droid will be delivered to you. Go back west and board your new ship (Your droid gets in automatically). Inside the ship, the droid asks what sector you want to travel to, so use the documentation to find out what symbols correspond to the sector you overheard in the bar, then punch the symbols in. Before long, the ship takes you through an asteroid field to the Sarien ship Deltaur. When the droid advises you to turn back, say no. You will automatically exit the ship wearing your jetpack.

Click the Hand icon the little wheel next to the door and fly in. When you enter, stand next to the door (but not in front of it). When the robot comes in to pick up the broken jetpack, quickly enter the door. In this room, click on the trunk to move it, then use the Xenon army knife to break open the vent. In the vent, go east and north, then crawl to the vent on the right. Kick it open and climb through. You will appear in the laundry.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION: You can also get to the laundry by moving the trunk, using the Xenon army knife on the trunk, then climbing in.

Enter the giant washing machine and watch Roger spin around. When the machine is finished, you will wear a Sarien uniform (you also get some ID). Go east and use the elevator on the left to arrive at a different floor. Go east. Talk to the really big dude who wants some ID. Show it to him (it's in your pockets) and walk west (x2). Use the elevator and go right until you are in the weapons room. Here, show the droid your ID, and he will go on back to fetch your weapon. While he is gone, quickly open the door. Get a grenade and walk out before the droid catches you. When you get your gun, walk west and use the grenade on the Sarien guarding the Star Generator.

Continue walking west. At some point, you will trip and lose your helmet. To make matters worse, the garbagebot here takes it and the Sariens discover who you really are. Quickly before a Sarien takes a shot at you, fire your weapon. Enter the elevator, and make your way back to where that big guard was, shooting everyone along the way. When you get to the dead guard, search his body to find a remote control that operates the Star Generator. Use the remote on the Star Generator, walk up to it, then enter the self-destruct code from the cartridge. You now have five minutes to escape. Walk west until you see an elevator, then use it. On the next screen, enter the elevator on the right to enter the shuttle bay. Then climb in the pod. Game over.
