But the real allure of this game is its emphasis on brainy Beltway analysis, as typified by the creepy sequence in which you use a ''Kennedy Assassination Tool'' to chart the path of the Red Square assassin's bullet; process a grainy photograph of the assailant in a suspect-identification program; and, in a gruesome touch, deduce the weapon used to blow off half the candidate's head. The apparent realism of the game seems almost beside the point; the only measure of a great game is whether it keeps you glued to your PC, and in this respect, Spycraft faithfully fulfills its mission.

"Spycraft", the new-world Espionage thriller set at the end of the Cold War looks to redefine gaming standards set by Software Houses to date. With the best user interface I've seen in a long time and with the assistance of William Colby, former director of the CIA, and Oleg Kalugin, former major general of the KGB, "Spycraft" could well be the beginning of a roaring comeback by Activision.

SPYCRAFT does suffer a few interface warts. First, you must read all the text – and there's a lot of it – yourself, rather than hearing it read aloud, and you can't change the text's typeface or size. Worse, on one of my machines, the text was improperly aligned, so that sentences ran off the right side of the window. You must always start the game from CD #1, saving your game is a minor pain, and Activision's funky sound drivers play far too softly. Still, there's nothing here that should keep you away. SPYCRAFT is an excellent, groundbreaking adventure game, setting a new standard for plot depth and realism. When you're finished, you'll be eager to head to Arlingron and put those sleuthing skills to work.
High Score

Spycraft is a classy piece of work; it's entertaining but at the same time manages never to insult the player's intelligence, unless it's on purpose (“Absolute crap!” is one of the charming evaluations your handiwork may receive over the course of your training.) A caveat: Realism, acting and game quality aside, Spycraft is essentially a mystery, and hence has as much replay value as finding your car in a mall parking lot.
Just Games Retro
It would have been interesting to see how this game would have been if it came out after 24, or if the show made a game in this fashion. With a little grit and a more intense execution (time limits, anyone?), this game could have been a serious winner. Instead, you're mostly jockeying a desk; lazily unraveling a plot that never seems all that dangerous (this is the only game you'll play where capturing a nuclear bomb is a little pit stop from the actual plot). It's a fine choice at a bargain price, but not much of a thriller.
