Star General

Auf dieses Programm habe ich gewartet - ein Strategiespiel, das Flottenkämpfe, Ressourcenverteilung und Planeteneroberungen gleichermaßen betont. Schiffe allein werden keiner Welt gefährlich, also braucht man Bodentruppen. Doch diese kommen ohne starke Flotte gar nicht erst bis zum Einsatzort; der Mix macht's. Auf nicht umkämpften Planeten darf man seine Einheiten jederzeit neu positionieren, um zukünftige Invasoren sofort an Engstellen zu stoppen.

After the heroic-fantasy universe on which the great Fantasy General was based, it's now science-fiction's turn to make its entrance into the Five Stars Series with Star General. Developed by Catware, the latest S.S.I. title takes war to new heights, offering players memorable galactic battles and planetary conquests. Star General, however, doesn't simply feature brand new graphics with different sounds as you would expect, but contain additional possibilities such as limited resource management, a two-level combat system, diplomacy and last but not least, multi-player support.

Sometimes, when you get a game design just right, it's okay to coast for a while. That's what SSI has done to some degree, and who can blame them? Panzer General was a slick, sweet design that became the best-selling war game of all time. It was easy to learn, hard to win, and very well-crafted.

So, on the whole, Star General is just another pretender to the Grail title. An interesting approach for sure - if anyone were to pick it up again, betters map and unit design could make the game a real winner. It could work - anyone?
