Synnergist

Thunder crashes, lightning flashes, and howling rain beats vehemently against the fortified walls of a ghastly mental institution looming high above the docks. Chilling screams of terror shriek through the darkness from a room within where a doctor has apparently gone mad. Despite the nurses' objections, he lets nothing hinder the execution of his murderous scheme. Gothic industrial music starts as the title of the game is presented, "Synnergist".

My overall impression of Synnergist is very positive. Here is a game that has an interesting plot with many twists and turns, nice graphics, unobtrusive sound and music, easy interface, and a good number of varied locations to explore. Synnergist has a similar mood and style to Noctropolis, with a little Gabriel Knight–type understated tension thrown in. It ended up being more macabre than I was expecting, which is a good thing in my book. I'm a sucker for any game that's sinister and foreboding without being too over the top. It's a shame that Vicarious Visions didn't follow up Synnergist with any other adventure games. It's a testament to them, though, that the company is still around, unlike a lot of other adventure game developers. Here's hoping that they decide to do another adventure game in the same vein as Synnergist down the road. Maybe next time it will get the attention it deserves.

Als ich begann, mich mit Synnergist zu beschäfrtigen, schreckte mich zunächst einmal die miserable Grafik ab, und ich dachte: "Da hat man mir wieder ein schlechtes Adventure aufs Auge gedrückt". Doch schon nach kurzer Spielzeit offenbarte das Programm seine eigentliche Stärke, die es vielen anderen Genre-Vertretern voraus hat: einen ungeheuer differenzierten Plot, der einem guten Kriminalroman alle Ehre machen würde. Die Atmospähre des Spiels erinnerte mich dabei ein wenig an den ersten Teil von Gabriel Knight und an das empire-Adventure Dreamweb. Wem diese Games zusagten, der wird sicherlich auch an Synnergist Gefallen finden. Diejenigen jedoch, die in erster Linie "etwas fürs Auge" suchen, sollten von Synnergist tunlichst die Finger lassen.

Tyvärr har spelet en riktigt stor nackdel: utseendet. All grafik i liret ser ut som om en berusad femåring löpt amok med sin kritsamling.

Die Puzzles kommen über Durchschnittsniveau nicht hinaus. Die etwas umständliche Handhabung und die eher mäßige Präsentation stören den ungetrübten Genuß der immerhin bemühten Story.
