Trivia
The Jaguar version received two awards in VideoGames magazine (March 1995) 1994 Game Awards:
- Best Shooter
- Best Music for a Cartridge Game
The game was named the Best Jaguar Arcade Game of the Year in GameFan's 1994 "Megawards" (Vol 3, Iss. 1)
At the time of its release, the music to Tempest 2000 was so popular, that gamers could purchase the CD soundtrack directly from Atari.
Another classic game conversion, Space War 2000, was in production for the Atari Jaguar. This update of the "first computer game" was unfortunately never finished, and the prototype was eventually distributed by B&C Computervisions.
Tempest 2000 was voted #56 in the Top 100 Games of All Time poll published by Game Informer Magazine (Issue 100, August 2001).

Author Jeff Minter was disappointed with the PlayStation port (he didn't do it) and lambasted it on his website.
