Just Games Retro
If Underworld sets out to make exploring a dungeon fun, it’s got enough hooks to pull that off successfully. It’s realistic enough to inject some consequences and considerations into your travels, you get a real sense of “getting better” as your character progresses, and all challenges can be bested by making friends with the locals. Its engine was, simply, a revolution, and the list of games and series it inspired is distinguished indeed. I hesitate to recommend it to any and everyone, because there’s not much here to impress a generation introduced through the later Elder Scrolls games. But if you’re interested, there’s a lot more depth here than you might expect, and a real sense of exploration to enjoy.

The DOS Spirit
Umiddelbar klassiker. "Golden DOS Spirit" uten tvil.

This adventure will leave you wondering how other game entertainments can ever stack up against the new standards Abyss sets for single-character adventure games. This is an adventure that PC/MS-DOS games have to purchase right away for their systems, as long as they have the hardware and memory needed to run the program.

PC-Spiele '93

ACE (Advanced Computer Entertainment)
Ultima Underworld is a real knock-you-down game. At first it is truly hard to believe that it's running on a standard home computer. It's not only great to look at, but it also plays superbly and has enough depth to keep even the most experienced dungeon-delving veteran going for months, if not years. If you've got a PC, then you've got to have Ultima Underworld.

Genaugenommen gleich zwei Meilensteine...

ASM (Aktueller Software Markt)

Back in PCF 9 it was the second game to score above 90%, and now that its price has plummeted, it deserves that accolade again.

But as a game (and not a philosophical issue) I can't find any major faults to Ultima Underworld. It may not look like a Rembrandt when up close (it's more like a Picasso), but you spend so much time moving you hardly care a whit. The size may be daunting, but it's more of a challenge than a put-off. The controls are unbelievably easy when you get the hang of them and the whole system is very clever indeed. It's probably not the hardest game you'll ever play and despite the realism, it's easy to live without it, but I can see anyone that does venture into the abyss having a whale of a time. I have heard reports of people already claiming to have completed it, but I suspect these are the kind of people that can play the average arcade game with their feet and still clock it. For the rest of us mere mortals it's a wonderful game and an experience not to be missed.

All Game Guide
Single-handedly clearing out an immense cavern of all its nasty inhabitants is no easy task. No quest is too daunting for the Avatar, especially when the incentive is to clear his name rather than die alone in a stony prison. Origin Systems and Looking Glass Studios have created a very interesting game, although some gamers may feel the plot to be possibly the weakest of any Ultima title in recent memory.

If you're in the mood for a good dose of nostalgia, or if you'd like to take a look back at a golden oldie rpg, then fire up Utima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss. It's still lots of fun opening every door and crossing every chasm to fill in every inch of the maps and make it to your final destination.
