Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness

But underneath all this macro-management are some wonderfully engaging touches: beautifully rendered graphics, clever character animations, and whimsical sound effects. And despite this meticulous crafting, the game never degenerates into confusion. Rather, Warcraft II reveals itself in its details, and what you find is a world of color, wit, and depth.

There is a simple (and some might say unpleasant) truth: Gamers like bashing the crap out of little things on screen. Most of us started with the simple pleasures of coin-op shooters, then moved on to PCs, where we started to gobble up Doom and Heretic and Dark Forces. And if those didn't satisfy our craving, we'd head over to the heavier stuff like Command & Conquer or Steel Panthers. And as more gamers get into strategy and wargames, we can at least pretend that we're playing something akin to chess, or some other thinking man's game -- while we are, in essence, killing things. Thus starts the introduction of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, the long awaited sequel to the original Warcraft released at the end of 1994 by Blizzard Entertainment. As the first episode, Warcraft II will plunge you into a bloody war between Orcs and Humans through two campaigns that depend on which side you decided to incarnate. These campaigns, divided into fourteen missions, feature various goals as destroying cities, regaining strategic places, escorting units, etc.

Warcraft II is gevaarlijk. Begin eraan en de omgeving rond uw PC verandert in geen tijd in een sociaal achtergebleven gebied. De toevoeging van een zee- en luchtmacht maken WCII nog beter dan het reeds sublieme deel I. Grafisch slaat WCII spijkers met koppen: dit is zonder tegenspraak het mooiste strategische spel ooit op de PC verschenen! De toevoeging van de editor maakt het pakket bovendien zeer volledig en verdubbelt de persoonlijke interesse duurtijd. Gemaakt om u in 1996 geen minuut te vervelen!

Si vous passez à côté de ce soft, consultez un psy ! Il est bon en solo, et c'est un MUST en réseau. Sa richesse et son esthétisme le font figurer parmi les incontournables. Vivement les add-on !

Blizzard Entertainment has outdone itself with this sequel to Warcraft: Orcs and Humans. The development company has become known for highly playable games - including cartridge classics like Interplay's The Lost Vikings and PC greats such as the side-scrolling action game Blackthorne - but the original Warcraft was the first to show Blizzard's penchant for strategic fare. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness continues in the same vein as its predecessor, but adds more depth and features to the formula.

I've got the humans on the run! I'll write the review later... If you buy this game you might forget to eat, you might lose your girlfriend, but WarCraft II makes it all worth it. For fans of the first WarCraft, Dune II for the PC, Command and Conquer for the PC, or Dune for the Genesis, WarCraft II is a must-buy. The rest of you (over age 13) should probably get it also.

Many of you have written me asking for information on Warcraft 2, well, here begins the first of what I hope will be many installments of Warcraft information. It took me awhile to get Warcraft 2 but I must admit that I certainly couldn't have expected anything this cool. Besser geht's nicht.WarCraft 2 hat all das, was wir uns eigentlich von Command & Conquer erhofft hatten. In den Disziplinen Grafik, Animationen und Level-Design ist die liebevoll übersetzte und synchronisierte deutsche Version faktisch stärker, in Sachen Sound-FX, Sprachausgabe und Steuerung mindestens ebenbürtig, bei der schmissigen Audio-Musik hingegen leicht unterlegen.

I had a lot of fun playing Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness. Although the game had its share of shortcomings, I felt that its good points heavily outweighed them.

Es ist aber wahrlich keine Schande, gegen Command & Conquer zweiter Sieger zu bleiben. Aufgrund der vorhandenen Unterschiede kommen beide Programme gut nebeneinander aus, Fantasy-Fans werden vermutlich Warcraft 2 bevorzugen. Dieses hat quantitativ zudem eindeutig mehr zu bieten. Somit gehört Blizzards Fortsetzung eigentlich auf den Gabentisch jedes Echtzeit-Strategen.

Warcraft 2 ist auch heute noch besser als viele neue Echtzeitspiele. Die ausgewogenen Missionen und der ständig anziehende Schwierigkeitsgrad halten die Motivation lange aufrecht. Mir macht es jedenfalls immer noch viel Spaß. Einzig die reinen Kampfeinsätze ohne Basisbau zerren etwas an meinen Nerven

Warcraft II är ett trevligt spel, men det känns lite haltande. För lite strategi och för mycket action, ungefär som att göra schack till realtidsaction.
