Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom

Like its immediate predecessor, released just over a year ago, Wing Commander IV comprises cinematic interludes in which Blair shoots the interstellar breeze with colleagues on various space stations and hyperkinetic, first-person-perspective space-combat sequences. The cast does a creditable job: It's especially fascinating to watch Hamill's Blair mix it up with the duplicitous Admiral Tolwyn, played by Malcolm McDowell looking exactly as he did in Star Trek Generations (have two more diminutive actors ever shared such a cramped screen)? Most of the video clips hover resolutely above B-movie level, a remarkable achievement considering the C-level production values of most so-called interactive movies. But as accomplished as they are, Wing Commander IV's live-action elements are blown out of orbit by its animated deep-space dogfights; I found myself skipping impatiently through crucial plot developments just to get to the next battle.

Speaking of combat, with this being a Wing title the story remains the same: if you liked previous Wing Commander games you'll love it; if you're a devoted X-Wing fan you almost certainly won't. For the definitive game in the Wing series get Privateer 2: The Darkening (PCZ #44, 94%), which is the best space combat game in the whole world ever (yes, it's even better than X-Wing). Of all the games in the series, this one is easily the best, seeing as how Wing Commander V: Prophecy was something of a disappointment.

The space combat is everything Wing Commander fans have come to expect, and there are plenty of options for novices including the ability to make yourself invincible if the battle gets too tough. The varied missions add to the suspense of the story, seamlessly blending the two distinct areas of the game. Wing Commander IV is a great chapter in this excellent series, and will prove an enthralling experience for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

De mate van detail in de beelden en het uitstekende acteerwerk van topacteurs als Malcolm McDowell en Mark Hamill geven het spel dat beetje ´extra´ waar de concurrentie eens mag naar kijken. Mijn leven heeft nu weinig betekenis tot de volgende Wing Commande uitkomt of de film in première gaat. Mogen de space-goden met u wezen.

If you thought Wing Commander 2 or 3 had a good story line, you will love this. Origin spent an estimated 10 million dollars on this game and it shows. The story line graphics are outstanding, the actors are great, and the story itself is comparable to that of an actual movie. In fact, you have 6 CD's worth of story line, and all of it good! In addition, you have the more options to make decision in the story line. The decisions are bigger that just what to say to someone, they include the option to defect to the Border Worlds, the option of which sector of space to fly missions to, and what to tell the Great Assembly in the end--and your life depends on saying the right thing. As far as simulator flying goes, it is good also, although not a whole lot different than WC 3.
