Witchaven

Witchaven dispose d'un graphisme fantastique et d'une ambiance accrocheuse. C'est quasiment le sans-faute si l'on excepte la config nécessaire !

The game is a mix of a traditionnal role playing game and a "doomlike" or better "hereticlike" game. On the role playing side of the game you find the classic experience points, level of experience which can give access to more powerful spells and better weapons handling. It is quite straight forward, you get experience when you find some specific items or when you kill something. There are some magic potions, health potions, poison, strength, magic rings, amulets, etc. On the doomlike side, you find a freedom of movement, a superimposed map, keys specific to each door, the game divided into levels, protections and powerups, teleports, four difficulty levels with the respawn of monsters as the thoughest.

Wer die mystische Atmospähre modernem Science-Fiction-Ambiente vorzieht und vor kleinen Rollenspiel-Elementen nicht zurückschreckt, darf sich auf spannende Stunden in schaurig schönen Verließen freuen. Doch Vorsicht: Das Niedermetzeln menschenähnlicher Kreaturen könnte nicht nur Jugendschützern, sondern auch sensiblen Zeitgenossen auf den Magen schlagen. Witchaven gehört nicht in Kinderhände.

Witchaven is certainly not a bad game, but it's not that great either. The graphics and sound are above average, but aren't enough to distinguish it from the rest of the clones available. If you are looking for a first-person, fantasy-based shooter, I would suggest Hexen from id Software. If you are looking for a first-person adventure/roleplaying game, try Arena-The Elder Scrolls. Both provide a much more enriching experience.

Unkompliziert und unspektakulär, optisch und spielerisch schier unendlich veraltert und bestenfalls als Sammelstück des Namens wegen ein Kauf wert: Witchaven kann als Spiel niemanden mehr überzeugen und steht zudem im Schatten seines Nachfolgers. Höchstens für Sammler interessant.
