NESPlayer One (Nov, 1990)

Obviously, you’ll want to rock this game with another person. One player is still enjoyable, but lacking. Still, this is the best basketball game I’ve played on the NES so far – that I can remember anyway. It’s been awhile! Long live Konami and long live DA-BU DARIBERU!
NESTilt (May, 1990)
NESNES Times (Apr 14, 2006)
So how does Double Dribble measure up to the later b-ball titles on the NES? While it can't compare with more advanced titles like Tecmo NBA Basketball that have more modes and options, Double Dribble does succeed where it counts, with fun, fast-paced gameplay that has stood the test of time. The 1P mode may not offer much lasting value, and the CPU teams may have an unfair advantage, but you'll still have a fun time. More importantly this game is great for quick two-player jam sessions. Overall, Double Dribble is another excellent Konami title, and still one of the best b-ball titles on the NES. If you want a simple yet fun hoops title that two players can enjoy, slam this cart into your system.
NESVideoGame (Jun, 1991)
NESThe Games Machine (UK) (May, 1990)
Double Dribble is a good way to acquaint yourself with one of America's biggest and best sports. Graphically the game is a little disappointing; the sprites are colourful, but they lack detail. Though sound is a mixture of jingles and spot effects, they blend together nicely to create the right atmosphere. Recommended to fans of the sport.
Both offensive and Defensive plays have an authentic feel. Double Dribble makes for an exciting end to end challenge with lots of baskets. A quality sports simulation.
NES1UP! (Jul 31, 2009)
NESThe Video Game Critic (Aug 02, 2005)
As you might expect from Konami, there's a terrific halftime show complete with cheerleaders and mascots. Although somewhat uneven, Double Dribble still provides for a very fun and easy-to-play game of hoops.
NESPower Play (Apr, 1990)
Game BoyVideo Games (Apr, 1994)
The cinemas are good, but this game becomes frustrating very fast. 5-on-5 could use more control too.
WiiIGN (Dec 13, 2007)
So, overall, Double Dribble earns itself a solid rating of "pass it by." It can be fun and nostalgic to sit down and compete with a friend in two-player mode, but it's just such a basic and old design that even any early appeal it might have won't last long. What's most encouraging about Double Dribble coming to the VC, though, isn't anything about this particular game – it's that it's a sports game from Konami. And old-school players know that sports games, from Konami, from the NES, also include Blades of Steel. That's a title that's aged much more gracefully over the years, so let's hope that Double Dribble's Wii Shop debut is a sign that the Steelers will be skating again soon. And maybe we'll get a better basketball game somewhere in the next 200 VC releases.
WiiGameSpot (Nov 28, 2007)
Sports games are typically made obsolete when the following year's update hits store shelves. Thus, a 20-year-old basketball game for the Nintendo Entertainment System had better be amazing to warrant the 500 point Virtual Console download fee. Unfortunately, Double Dribble is far from amazing.
Game BoyTotal! (Germany) (Mar, 1994)
40 (UK) (Nov 24, 2007)
Better than Nintendo's own NES Basketball, certainly, but only worth the points to the hardiest retro sports fan.
WiiNintendo Life (Nov 17, 2007)
This is the first basketball game to come to VC, and unfortunately for us, it's not very good. While Double Dribble was fairly popular back in the day due to the graphics (There are some cutscenes with fairly detailed stuff, like a crowd marching into a stadium or a player making a slam dunk) it hasn't aged very well.
