PSO ver. 2, all things considered, is a better game than the original PSO. The various gameplay additions go a long way to making one of the most addictive games ever even more appealing. I will admit, though, I wanted more. I know it was only an upgrade and not a sequel, but there were some noticeable absences in the gameplay department that needed to be addressed. And no one likes paying for something they used to get for free. As it stands, though, PSO ver. 2 is an amazing game. Many of the issues I addressed were fixed in PSO's transition to the next-gen consoles (something that is good for the series, but somehow even more frustrating for me since I didn't get it in this game). For being released only months later, Sonic Team put a lot into this upgrade. But it was just so close to being flawless that it stings!

The first thing you should realize is the title of this game is Phantasy Star Online Version 2 -- not Phantasy Star Online II. Therefore, PSOv2 is entirely compatible with v1, while incorporating a host of new features, both graphic and gameplay oriented. If you have and enjoy v1, then there is a very good chance the $3/month Hunter's License fee to play v2 will be worth it. If you don't have v1 then shame on you. Buy v2 before you miss another piece of Sega history in the making. Finally, if you (understandably) want PSOII, then wait until it's created and released.

If you were expecting a complete redo, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Version 2 is essentially the same game with new material scattered along the outskirts.

So in the end... is version 2 worth it? I say yes, as the new game modes are a lot of fun, and there are plenty of new weapons to keep you entertained. I'd go as far as saying that this is what Phantasy Star Online should have been like in the first place. If these new game modes and the addition of new items to find do not catch your interest, or you do not wish to pay Sega to play online, then I recommend sticking with version 1 which will remain free, or finding another game to play.

Phantasy Star Online Version 2 is a good game, and it does offer new online gameplay, unfortunately you'll have to pay a monthly fee to access any of it.

For all the great additions they've made in PSO Version 2, there are some changes that I think should've definitely been made. For example, the trading system in PSO Ver. 2 still remains the same - both of you drop an item in order for the other player to examine or, whether you like it or not, grab. Furthermore, when we interviewed Yuji Naka at the launch of PSO, he originally had over 16 different characters to select from... couldn't he just added three or four of them to PSO Ver. 2? But we can always gripe about what could've been and rather than do that, we should concentrate on what we have. Sure, you have to give up $15 bucks for three months of unlimited online play in order to enjoy all the new additions to PSO Version 2. And you know what? I can think of a thousand worse ways to waste $15 bucks. The thought of teaming together with some old PSO friends in a game of Chu Chu soccer, or blasting some rival website editor in a battle mode game is well-worth the experience.

If you're already a Phantasy Star Online fan, Version 2 is a no-brainer – it adds more levels for you to attain, a new difficulty, and a Battle mode that is great for proving who amongst your online friends is the PSO king. For the rest of the gaming populace, this just marks the passing of a great system, since waiting for Phantasy Star Online on GameCube may be a wiser choice.

Less than a year after PSO's release, Yuji Naka and Sonic Team follow up on the original PSO with Phantasy Star Online Version 2. PSO Version 2 retains PSO's core gameplay and enhances it with gameplay tweaks and extra modes. Rather than a true sequel, the game is more of an expansion of the original game that is ultimately a more polished product.

Phew. That’s my little rant over with now. So then, in conclusion what does PSO V2 offer to the new PSO player? Well it is a well-structured, beautiful RPG with thousands of players for you to interact with, and must be purchased. For the PSO veteran, V2 offers little on top of what you already have, but you will buy it, you have no choice, you fell in love with the original and you must have more. It’s just a shame that the hackers have ruined it for you, if Sega can eliminate them, add 15% onto these scores, yes, they really take that much from the game! Oh well, I must go. I have to go and destroy some Delsabers with my Maracas...
