So, is the package worth your hard earned $39.99? Honestly, no it’s not. The sad part is that the worst element of the game, the emulation, could have easily been prevented. It’s just horrible, and could have simply been fixed if more time had gone into it. But does it make the game not worth owning? Hell no. If you plan on getting a Dreamcast, it’s well worth it to pay an extra $20 for the Smash Pack (if there’s any left that is). My advice if you already own a Dreamcast and you want this package, wait for the price to drop to $19.99 or so. What it all comes down to is that a great package, full of some truly classic games was just butchered in the conversion process, but it just goes to show how great these titles truly are when it’s still worth owning. Nevertheless, one thing The Smash Pack Vol. 1 really does well, is it give me high hopes for volume 2, just don’t mess up the emulation next time Sega, please.

Mouth-watering checklist isn't it? Makes us wish that Sega had released Volumes 2 and 3 right afterward (the humanity!). Brought down by only one curious glitch (i.e., the sound synthesis sounds like it's being played through a gigantic tin can because of the boosted power and processing speed of the DC's sound chip), and appropriately priced (Free with the spanking new Dreamcast Smash Pack System, and set to be cheap as dirt when it hits retail in late March) there are more reasons to get your hands on Smash Pack – Volume 1 as soon as possible than not.

Beyond the Genesis games, the wrestling game has nice graphics (for its time) but terrible animation. It's fun to play a few times, but that's about it. Virtua Cop 2 supports the Dreamcast light guns, so at least you have an excuse to dust those off. Overall, Sega Smashpack Volume 1 is sufficient for casual players, but longtime Genesis fans should stick with the originals.
