It's been a long-time since The Longest Journey was released, with fans of the game wondering whether a sequel could possibly match the original. They need wonder no longer. Dreamfall is an amazing journey that propels players into a world where science and magic and art and music combine to make a whole much greater than the sum of its parts.

The experience of playing Dreamfall is so pleasant and user-friendly that I think it has the potential to be a “gateway” game, a game like Myst or The Sims, which brings new players to computer and video games. I know lots of gamers who aren’t adventure players who are eating the game up with a spoon. The experience of playing this lovely game reminded me of not only why I play adventure games, but why I play any kind of computer games at all. For any true-blue adventure gamer out there to miss this game would be a shame, because they’d be passing on an unusually lavish treat.

The story in Dreamfall is a stunner. It has depth and broad scope, but the telling is the thing. As with the original, lengthy conversations weave you into the plot, and whilst it has its sillier moments, and will at times perhaps leave you bemused and wondering, it's the way it unfolds that rarely lets you go. Part sci-fi, part social commentary, part fantasy adventure, it ebbs and flows between tension and fear, humour and tenderness. It has twists and turns, some very surprising moments, and I was absorbed from beginning to end.

Given the current polarized interest in the adventure genre, few titles have garnered the level of pre-release publicity and anticipation from the gaming community as Dreamfall: The Longest Journey has in recent years. It is the much awaited sequel to Ragnar Tornquist’s critically acclaimed masterpiece The Longest Journey. While the story of this sequel is said to stay faithful to the original, Tornquist has hinted early on during the game’s development that other elements in the game have been completely revamped.

...I'll still go ahead and pronounce Dreamfall a supermodel of adventure gaming. Given that the whole genre (probably more so than any other) is basically a multi-dimensional balancing act, constantly struggling to stay story-driven, yet interactive, emotional but not clichéd, challenging but not frustrating, complex but not convoluted, etc., Dreamfall gets so amazingly many things right that any of its missteps (which are truly very tiny and few) can be summarily ignored. Its engaging characters, gripping story, occasionally off-the-wall sense of humor, brilliant visual style, great voice acting, intuitive and easy to use interface, and most of all, ability to avoid most pitfalls of the adventure genre, propel it straight to the top of the relatively short list of adventure games that have become instant classics.

Warto.

I don't think this game suffers for being an action/adventure hybrid, though that is not to say this game couldn't have been developed in a manner similar to The Longest Journey. The story is compelling, if sad, and in need of completion by another sequel, and I enjoyed the variety in the puzzles. There are timed sequences, some combat, some stealthy sections, one maze, one sound puzzle, several pattern matching puzzles, plenty of conversation (with nowhere near as much swearing as in TLJ), beautiful, mysterious and fascinating environments, enjoyable characters and good music to go with it all. All in all, I had a ball playing this game, and you can add me to the list of people eagerly awaiting the third instalment of the story. I just hope it doesn't take another six years to arrive!

There are games that break expectations in such a profound way they raise the standards for the industry. Some are awe inspiring for their graphics, others for their breathtaking soundtrack. Dreamfall - The Longest Journey is an amazing example of a game that stands to raise the standards in two categories, concept and sound, while maintaining high standards for all aspects of the game itself. Dreamfall - The Longest Journey has an intricate, compelling plot that is told through the expressive voices of a talented acting staff. The graphics are rich and detailed and the gameplay itself is engaging. The game itself is fun and challenging, requiring players to think outside the box as they face the various challenges and puzzles scattered throughout the game.

I probably haven’t been waiting for this game with as much anticipation as a lot of you, but as the launch date grew near I have to confess I was eager to see what Ragnar Tørnquist and his team were going to come up with. After finishing the game I can say I was neither disappointed nor terribly impressed. They team at Funcom can tell one helluva story, but they still need to work on putting gameplay into the game. If you are the type of gamer who mashes the button to skip cinematics so you can play the next level then stay away from this title, but if you want to participate in one of the most interesting and philosophical stories of our time, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is in a class of its own.

WindowsAlternative Magazine Online
Dreamfall is a flawed game that has nonetheless stood the test of time. It takes risks that don’t always pay off but fundamentally, it’s a well told story crammed full of emotional and magical moments. The plot has only been touched upon lightly in this review – as it should be – but by the end of your 10-15 hour journey with Zoë Castillo, despite some bumpy action sequences along the way, you won’t want it all to be over. The plot threads left loose may displease some players, but there is still just enough resolution offered to make Dreamfall a satisfying self-contained experience rather than simply the middle part of a trilogy. Ragnar Tørnquist, if you’re reading this – you’ve released your MMORPG The Secret World. Dreamfall Chapters next please!

In my opinion, the reason why you should get Dreamfall is the story. The game really plays like an interactive movie, complete with drama, light moments, mystery, and danger. For the fans who played the original, it might be slight disappointment because the story lost some of the charm, but they will still no doubt enjoy the story almost as much as the original. Overall, a very decent and enjoyable game, and recommended.

Adventure games, by and large, are a dying breed amongst most gamers. Very few are released every year and even less of those go on to be popular with a large number of gamers. They are more plot and less shooting; more characterization and less explosions; more art-house and less Hollywood. More often than not you’ll find yourself moving slowly throughout a detailed backdrop than blasting your way through invading aliens. It is unfortunate that adventure games don’t draw in the crowds like FPS or Platformers do, and yet a few quality titles hit the shelves in spite of this.

In the end, regardless off all the brilliant work that has gone into it, Dreamfall remains cursed by the simple fact that it does feature long stretches of dialog, less action than most games, a mature and well-thought out plot, intelligent characters and, and here’s the clincher, is an adventure game. While it may not be the genre that is dying, it now seems to me that it’s the audience that is growing incessantly less patient and demands to be slapped in the face more often by games. This is too bad though since Dreamfall (and its inevitable sequel, since it follows the Empire Strikes Back story-arch) is truly one of the best gaming experiences one could demand. Well told, brilliantly portrayed, hauntingly memorable (although a few more hours at the end would have given so much more closure), it stands as a landmark to the emotional and storytelling depth games can aspire to.

Dreamfall is in just about every aspect a lesser game than its predecessor, but that does not mean it is a bad game. If you enjoy games with a great deal of character interaction and an almost complete focus on the storyline, you should still not miss Dreamfall. Days after you complete the game, you may still find yourself thinking about the story. As long as you do not go in looking for an unforgettable classic, you may come to realize that Dreamfall can be a very enjoyable game.

In a nutshell, while Dreamfall might not be the most challenging adventure game you've ever played and the action elements might not be comparable to good action-adventure games, it still is a treat for adventure fans. It offers an engaging and imaginative storyline, smooth gameplay and compelling environments for players to lose themselves in. Sure, Dreamfall might not have a lot of replay value, but at $40 bucks, it's definitely worth a purchase if you are a fan of adventure gaming.

Что значит "Undreaming is unchained"?

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is, first and foremost, a great work of science fiction. Such a complex plot, endearing characters, and imaginative settings and situations are highly uncommon to gaming, or any medium for that matter. Those familiar with the game's predecessor might expect no less, since it's widely considered one of the best adventure games ever made. Judged as a follow-up to a beloved classic, Dreamfall does not disappoint, for the most part.

It exhibits the unique attention to detail and terrific presentation that made The Longest Journey so remarkable for its time. But Dreamfall also does an excellent job drawing in new players as well as those fans patiently awaiting this sequel. The actual gameplay is a blend of action adventure conventions, but it clearly isn't the main draw. It's there to help make the story more engaging, and that's more or less what it does.

Dreamfall is a multimedia feast for the senses and a compelling interactive movie. As an action-adventure game, it doesn’t offer much of a challenge beyond furthering the story, but it is certainly a story worth experiencing. Unlike in other video games, Dreamfall’s realistic characters are treated intelligently, making players actually care what happens to them beyond just losing a single life. Although the game’s ending leaves several loose ends that will have players wanting more, it’s still a fun ride that offers a special and entertaining experience for players.

Dreamfall is a teeter-totter of a title. Good one minute, not so good the next. If you're a fan of adventure games, you'll probably want to consider picking this one up. It probably won't suit the average gamer's taste, but that doesn't mean it's not without merit. In fact, underneath all the trappings of trying to do too much, it really is a good game. With a confirmed sequel in the works, hopefully they will return to the journey's roots, but at the very least address the issues that plagued this iteration. Now if only Lucasarts would announce Grim Fandango 2....

WindowsThunderbolt Games
Some may claim Dreamfall’s story to be clichéd, this is to be expected when yet another game uses a ‘secret world of magic parallel to ours’ as its main foundation for the narrative. However it is so much more than this, what makes the game so special are the intricate details and characters that engulf you into this surreal fantasy world. As director Ragnor Tornquist explained “Games are not art – at least not yet, but there is art in games”. Dreamfall is clearly an experience rather than just a game, if you have even the slightest interest in adventure/story-based videogames then you owe it to yourself to see what exactly Dreamfall has to offer.

How much you like Dreamfall is going to depend on what you play video games for. If you're one of the diehards who insists a game is meant to be played, not watched; if you're a twitch junkie with the hand-eye coordination of a brain surgeon; and if you enjoy a great deal of caffeine with your gaming; then this is not your game at all. It may actually give you a slight rash. If you're one of the advocates of games as art, a believer that sometimes a game can rise above the level of simple entertainment and tell an actual story, and tell it well, then Dreamfall is a must-play.

If you're a fan at all of a strong sci-fi or fantasy storytelling, Dreamfall should be right up your alley. Even with the flawed gameplay, Dreamfall's excellent audio, breathtaking story, and outstanding environments put it on the top of the current adventure heap. Dreamfall is relatively short, about ten hours, but chances are you'll play through it a second time to get some of the references you missed. Quite simply, if you like an excellent story in your games, go out and pick up a copy of Dreamfall for the PC or Xbox.

Enfin une suite à The Longest Journey !

XboxIGN
Anyone who played the original The Longest Journey for the PC back in 2000 couldn't have resisted its unyielding charm. The story, sounds, wildly creative environments and stunningly authentic character interaction were enough to make it a true classic. Six years later, the sequel finally makes its appearance, and things have clearly changed. Though Dreamfall: The Longest Journey retains a few of the best parts of the original, it tacked on a lot of unnecessary gameplay elements while stripping down traditional adventure mechanics, leading to a decidedly less satisfying experience.

WindowsIGN
Be warned, if you don't like watching lengthy conversations or if you generally disregard a game's plot, you'll be absolutely dissatisfied with Dreamfall. However, if you're in the mood for one of gaming's best and most recent narratives, by all means pick this one up. Just be aware that Dreamfall's appeal lies largely in its narrative and characters, and not in the gameplay.

WindowsGame Over Online
I think if one were to put together a list of the best adventure games of all time, Funcom's The Longest Journey would, if not win, at least be a significant part of the discussion. And if one were to restrict the entries to only those released in a year starting with a '2,' then The Longest Journey would easily be in the top two (for me, the other top game would be Syberia).

WindowsGame Freaks 365
Contrary to what the title states, this game is not at all long. I beat it in 7 hours. Like I said before, the game is easy. There is no replay value, no unlockable content. If you are going to pay over 30 bucks for this, you might just feel ripped off. While it emphasizes a great storyline, anyone with good sense will find it boring initially and might never get into it. The addition of the new modes of gameplay are very annoying. Unlike the last game, this is not at all long. Game developers should focus on expanding the original game's vision and not try to broaden the audience. Unless you can get this game in the bargain bin, you should pass.

Overall if you’re looking for great gameplay then this is not thebest game. But if you’re looking for an interesting story that willkeep you enthralled then pick this game up. It won’t take more than 15hours and then you’re pretty much done, there’s no hidden story orEaster eggs to find in this game, just flat out solve the mystery. Iwould personally wait until the price drops, or maybe even buy thefirst one and play through that if you haven’t already. Either way,it’s an interesting story, just lacking in production value and efforton the developers part.

Still, it’s important not to understate the delightful storytelling that precedes it (silly Kian bits aside), the wondrous nature of the game world, and the countless ideas that Funcom bring to their game. Dreamfall is hugely flawed, often systemically broken, and dreadful in its concluding minutes. But rarely have I been so engrossed by a game, or so emotionally affected by one - and that, ultimately, is what leaves the lasting impression.

Dreamfall: TLJ is a good game and would be great for anyone who likes the genre. The game contains a good story combined with interesting puzzles to solve along the way. Dreamfall: TLJ does well with its level of detail in character building, but is let down by a very poor fighting system that shouldn't have been included. If you can ignore the few fights in the game and get through them, then you won't be let down by Dreamfall: TLJ.

Imagine a majestic bald eagle soaring through the sky, not a care in the world except for where its next furry meat-snack is coming from. Now imagine that same eagle trying to flap its wings with a brick tied to its talons. That's pretty much how we'd sum up Dreamfall: The Longest Journey - a high-flying adventure that's been weighed down with several unnecessary and awkward fighting sequences.

The very epitome of the snazzy adventure sequel, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is bigger and better, yet somehow exactly the same adventure. Sadly, this includes sharing the same faults that probably stopped the original from bothering your hard drive.

With all of the negative elements in the game, suggesting a purchase of Dreamfall to anyone is a difficult thing to do. With sub par combat, stiff controls and camera, and repetitive gameplay, Dreamfall is not the type of game on which to spend forty hard earned dollars. With that said, the story in Dreamfall is alone worthy of at least a rental for any fan of the adventure genre. Dreamfall sadly didn't live up to the standards set by its predecessor, but with a story that will not soon be forgotten, it wouldn't hurt to check it out.

Is the adventure game dead and buried? It’d take a bigger man than I to make that supposition, but if the naysayers are right, Funcom are aiming to pull off a resurrection. Dreamfall has everything going for it right from the off. It’s the sequel to the 1999 adventure game The Longest Journey, one of the most beautiful adventure games I’ve ever seen. It focuses on the story of April Ryan in the two worlds of Arcadia and Stark. Arcadia is a world of magic while Stark is a future version of our planet. It’s a beautifully realised setting that continues into Dreamfall.

It’s a shame that with such outstanding production values and such a beautifully realized story and world, Dreamfall doesn’t do more as a video game. It adheres quite strictly to its adventure roots but fails to provide a satisfying challenge. I suppose some dreams just aren’t mean to come true.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey is the sequel to the PC’s original The Longest Journey, which was critically applauded but largely missed by the consuming masses as it slipped unnoticed beneath the quality radar. As with most adventure games that rely heavily on story, characterizations, dialogue, and puzzle solving, The Longest Journey series is perhaps best appreciated by those gamers with infinite patience and a willingness to slip joyously into deep narrative waters. However, gamers more suited to the general immediacy provided by the vast majority of today’s videogames may well find themselves fighting sleep within the opening thirty minutes of Dreamfall.

Videogames can be brash affairs, with their guns and cars and tits and stuff. Pop culture entertainment and big name brands bound together with startling technical wizardry and graphics-as-porn. Forty quid gets you 15 hours of in-your-face fun. Have some of that, you monkeys!

Adventure gamers like to get all nostalgic, and can you blame them? The point-and-click era passed into gaming history more than a little while ago. If asked, many of them will point to The Longest Journey as the genre's swan song. That was six years ago, a time when the recommended system was a 266MHz Pentium II with 64MB of RAM. In picking back up the series -- a sequel of sorts -- the goal was to embrace the advancements since then and with them evolve the form of the adventure game. But natural selection is as hard at work in the videogame environment as anywhere else and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey finds itself right back at the top of the endangered species list.

God, I miss adventure games. On the other hand, I miss Betamax, reel-based home movies, and sepia-colored shag carpet--that doesn't mean you should. Unfortunately, The Longest Journey sequel Dreamfall has my problem: numskull nostalgia, to the point of wrecking an otherwise uncommonly well-written story.

The longest journey may well be the excruciating reach down to turn on the Xbox's power supply to play the third-person adventure Dreamfall. Although the game holds an intriguing and extremely likable protagonist in the plucky slacker Zoe Castillo, the rest of the game, in the gritty parlance of the streets, blows monkey chunks.
