It's all right if you're feeling a little uneasy about DRIV3R these days. The project (pronounced "Driver 3", although "Driv-three-er" is more fun to say) has been delayed heavily since it was originally unveiled in 2002; what's worse, previews of the game always tended to paint the picture of an unfinished title. All this added to the series' bumpy history, from innovative sensation in 1999 to slogging disappointment in 2000 to silence for the next four years, and you can see where trouble might be brewing.

In Vice City if things get too tough, you just go for a drive/ride/flight/boatride/shooting spree/package hunt and then find something else to do or try again – the game flows… in Driv3r you have to quit the Undercover mode to go for a chill-out spin. Oh heck - yet another game that suffers in comparison to GTA. Driv3r tries hard – maybe too hard, and sometimes in the wrong places, but there’s undeniably plenty of action to be had.

That’s Driver 3 to you and me. My first foray into the ever-popular open-ended type gameplay came with Grand Theft Auto III. Rockstar’s game was fascinating because of the wealth of options you had at your disposal, which Rockstar later, arguably perfected with GTA: Vice City. I admit that I only briefly played Driver 2 to get a feel of the game, but from what I played; DRIV3R is a much improved game.

There has been a lot of fuzz around Driv3r lately. Some say it is good while others say it is the worst. I thought it was time for a honest and impartial review that will let everybody know how the matter stands. After all, that is what Fragland is all about.

Reflections are clearly very clued up when it comes to classic car chases, in fact these sections are so good that the on-foot portions don’t manage to make enough of an impression in comparison, poor on the spot AI doesn’t help the cause. All that said the on-foot bits are adequate enough (and better than The Getaway), but feel a little more forced then they should thanks in most part to the 3D waking of the GTA series, surely sticking to car chases only wouldn’t of harmed the games mass appeal? Whatever the case, DRIV3R isn’t too bad at all.

DRIV3R is without doubt a fun game. The driving sections feel very cinematic, and, like the other Driver games are lots of fun to do, even if they do suffer from the inherited sameness and silly time limits. The on-foot sections really let the game down, but some other new features make the game more interesting. The game also suffers from some dodgy bug problems at times, but, by and large, the game holds steady enough for you to play. Due to the massive hype campaign it had following it, Driv3r will undoubtedly be picked up by a fair few people without even reading reviews, either fans of the series, or people who believe the hype. Some people will read reviews trashing the game, and avoid it completely. Some smart people will read the reviews, and then rent the game to decide for themselves. Driv3r has its problems, but are not intrusive enough to make me want to melt the disc, and if you persevere, there’s a lot of fun to be had, and a lot of stuff to be smashed.

A good attempt but a disappointment for most driver fans. If you would like to star in or direct an action film then give it a go but remember: This is no GTA 3.

This game has taken a very long time to reach the consoles. I know many have been waiting for this game, but personally I had not really put any thought into the game nor did I have high hopes. I first saw what Driv3r had to offer at E3 and was pretty impressed. But this was from a point of view that I was just watching somebody else playing it. I never really picked the controller up and had a go at it. So the time had come and Driv3r was released for the Microsoft Xbox and the Playstation 2 systems. I asked Mike personally if I could review this game because to be quite honest, I heard some bad things about this game. So I wanted to see for myself how bad it was. Having a very bad taste in my mouth from the horrible port of Mafia to the Xbox, I was ready to clear the air and see what lied before me with this game. So read on and hopefully you will get something out of this review that you could not get out of other reviews that are floating around the net.

DRIV3R will go down as one of the biggest disappointments on Playstation 2 alongside Enter The Matrix - another Atari game. With more spit and polish this game could have been up there with Grand Theft Auto, sadly it isn't even in the same league. Having said that, those looking for something to keep them entertained until Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas comes out in three months, will get some joy out of this title - if you can stand the glitches and unbalanced learning curve.

Basically, Driv3r attempts to offer something for everyone. It has lots of action, lots of drama, and lots of thought. In doing this, Driv3r is rising that there are people who desire all three of these in one title. A bit of the joy provided by each of these individually is always diminished by the other two, so it seems to me that this is not a very enjoyable style of play, but there certainly a few people who will enjoy it. Anyone looking for pure Vice-City mayhem, be forewarned, the two games are not comparable, Driv3r attempts to take some sort of moral high ground, embedding a massive plot line and several dull, over-realistic missions. In doing so, it has seriously compromised the playability of what could have been a great mafia game.

One of my favorite things to do with my friends a few years ago of course was to play PS on weekends, staying up late and going through any number of driving, sports, or action titles throughout a Saturday and Sunday evening. One of these that I particularly enjoyed was the original Driver, as I remember friends and I would constantly try to see who could use the glitches the best and do things like shoot our own cars or cop cars 400 feet in the air and things like that after head on collisions. Well, here we are again, getting another installment to the Driver series with Driver 3, but unfortunately I think it’s safe to say that this version has definitely taken a wrong turn somewhere.

Back before Grand Theft Auto III revolutionized the action genre with its free-roaming world, Driver 2 was an astonishing and innovative game that featured the main character getting out of his car to take control of another that just happened to be parked in the massive streets. Its mixture of driving and “borrowing” cars was an interesting idea and it made the game all the more entertaining. Now, with this third outing, DRIV3R brings back Tanner for a game that means to change the way we see cinematic car chases in a game. Get behind the wheel because the wheelman is back.

Grand Theft Auto is a nonlinear action-oriented Mafioso franchise. Driver isn't. Grand Theft Auto has let players go where they wanted, when they wanted, to choose from a long list of things to do. Driver hasn't. Grand Theft Auto uses a covey of satirical pop culture references in a mature but fun-about setting. Driver doesn't. Driver has been one of Atari's leading franchises for the last five years now. Not just because the first Driver topped the charts, but because it's really one of the only successful competitor's Grand Theft Auto has ever shared a garage with. After its inaugural entry in 1999 however, Driver 2 drove into stores a year later with its hinges falling off and its engine stuttering.

Reflections has been at this a long time, this crash-'em-up, bash-'em-up destruction derby driving type thing. The Newcastle, England-based developer is good at making cars that drive fast and crash into tiny bits of flying metal and I've had a hell of a time playing their games over the years. But what surprises me most about the team's progress from its humble origins to a million-plus game-selling development studio is that DRIV3R, the third in the once venerable series, is almost exactly like Driver in design, and more importantly, in its aim.

Driv3r. How does one pronounce such a sassy title as “Driv3r”? Drivv-three-are? Is it meant to be read as “Driver 3”? No, the game is officially pronounced “Driver”, exactly the same pronunciation as the first title in the series, named simply “Driver”, leaving any number-noted coolness far from its title. So Driv3r is simply Driver with a slight visual alteration as an update. This is a direct metaphor for the game itself. Driv3r is Driver, or perhaps more like Driver 2, but this metaphor still holds: the new Driver game is an old car with a new coat of paint. That would be fine under some circumstances, but the engine on this car isn’t running like it used to; a paintjob isn’t what we were expecting here. For a game that spent years in development hell, Driv3r doesn’t bring much new to the table.

We have left-field games like Katamari Damacy, with relatively low production values but great gameplay. Then there are beautiful games like DooM 3 that many found disappointing once they dug their gamer claws in. DRIV3R manages to fall into a third category, one where the initial impression is one of hip excitement, pulp cinema, and burnished presentation. Heavyweight voice actors, an intriguing introduction, and muscle cars sweeping through hairpin turns in exotic locations--what could possibly go wrong?

In the past few years, the open-ended crime simulation subgenre has exploded, due in no small part to the success of Grand Theft Auto III. But back when GTA was still just a 2D game in an increasingly 3D world, Reflections released a PlayStation game called Driver. While it didn't offer the sort of weapon-based, on-foot thrills that you'd expect from a modern game, Driver sort of set the tone for what was to follow by giving you a fairly open city with a lot of potential for, well...driving. But times have changed. Driver 2, which came out in 2000, went ahead and added some carjacking and other out-of-car experiences. Today's popular crime games mix free-form driving sequences with a healthy dose of on-foot action complete with a whole lot of gunplay and gritty subject matter. And Reflections has put together such a game in the third installment in the Driver series, which once again puts you in the shoes of Tanner, an undercover FBI agent with a lead foot.

If you noticed a cold, forced indifference throughout this review, that’s because it’s a struggle for me not to lay into this game harder than I’ve ever ripped into a game. (Although re-reading the review, I ended up laying into the game pretty hard.) I was so horribly disappointed by Driv3r, being a fan of the previous two games on the PSone. The hype was so high that I’m coming down harder on Driv3r than I do on most games. The game is buggy, and incomplete. It should not have been released in my opinion. I had real difficulties playing the game long enough to get a fair review. I dreaded playing it after the first hour or two. 1999 was a year of both great sadness and great joy. At the start of it there was only one thing on my mind and I can clearly remember my best mate and I struggling to talk about anything else until around mid-spring. I am of course talking about the fact that after 16 years in the wilderness we were finally going to see a new Star Wars film, and thank the maker for that. Episode 1 was surely going to be the best film ever, wasn't it? Yeah sure it was, after all, how could George possibly get it wrong after all this time? Tch, it didn't even bare thinking about. In fact, I remember going to see a little movie called The Matrix purely because it had the Star Wars trailer before it. When the trailer finished (a two-handed lightsaber? Oh wow...) I nearly left the theatre right there and then. I'm so glad I didn't.

In the end, all Driver 3 does is prove that a huge budget, tons of development time, Hollywood voice acting, and all the PR in the world don't necessarily mean a game's going to be good. Many of the problems could be fixed by another six months development time, but then that would put the title up against Grand Theft Auto, where it would get killed. As a result of the all-mighty dollar, Atari and Reflections have shoveled out a buggy, unfinished and uninspired game (2.5 million of them to be exact). Don't waste your money purchasing this game, don't waste cash renting it, and don't waste your time borrowing it from someone.

Driv3r has been a long time coming and many are bound to wonder what they were waiting for. Tired gameplay, recycled missions, sluggish controls, and dull mini-games do not lead to award winning software. Where the developers of the Driver and GTA series have been poking fun at each other for years it seems as though Rockstar will get the last laugh as the two-and-a-half year old GTA: Vice City is a far superior game in every aspect. Sure GTA: VC may not be the best looking game ever created, and the damage modeling and physics may not be perfect, but it excels in the only facet that really matters: gameplay, and when it comes to that it appears as though Atari’s series will never catch up.

The Driver franchise has the unfair reputation of being a GTA clone when it’s actually focused more on simulating 70s-style car chases. Gelijkaardige historie zagen we bij Enter the Matrix.

You have to feel sorry for Reflections. The developer always comes close to greatness with its video-game creations, and then ruins them in the last six months of development. Which is a shame for those wanting a playable version of Stuntman that wasn't tediously difficult, or a successful and different take on the "freeform" style of GTA play -- which DRIV3R isn't. Instead, we're "treated" to an overly ambitious effort to re-create three gigantic metropolises, in which vehicles can realistically careen into each other in spectacular collisions, and a single-player plot following the tribulations of the grindingly monotone-voiced and slightly overweight Tanner; the least interesting video-game hero since Trevor McFur invaded the Crescent Galaxy.

Nine months separate the PC release of Driver 3 from the release of its console counterparts. A sane, logical type of person might assume that the large gap between the borderline-broken console versions and the newly released PC edition was used to fix the game's serious problems. But those people would be mistaken. Driver 3 for the PC is just about as broken as it was on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 last year, and thanks to the ill-conceived introduction of a mouse and keyboard into the mix, it manages to be even worse, overall.

Driv3r is many things. As the “3” clumsily inserted into the position where the “e” should be indicates, it’s the third game in the well-known Driver series. It is also a game based on driving and shooting. And it’s a port from the consoles to the PC. That’s what Driv3r is. You might be more interested to know what Driv3r isn’t though – a good game.

Pop psychology tells us that when men get lost, they refuse to ask for directions. Something to do with pride and ego and an innate desire to lead our people to the Promised Land, I think, though I don’t really subscribe to the theory. Once you’ve gotten lost alone in Cracktown, East Oakland, you learn pretty quickly that pulling over and asking for directions is a WAY better idea than relying on some sort of amphibious instinct buried deep in your caveman brain to find your way North again. Especially at two in the morning.

The main problem with this game is that even the rare exciting and fun moments in it have been ruined by... well, by practically everything else. And it's frustrating, too, in a bad way. It's as simple as that.

As much as Atari and Reflections may think we've got it in for Driv3r, we really haven't. We wanted it to be the pinnacle of mission-based driving games as much as the next man; we didn't sit around plotting its demise and wonder how many clever sentences we could put into our review. We really did think that with all the talent and experience of the team that this would be one of the games of the year. Were these unreasonable expectations? We're sure the many millions of Driver fans the world over were expecting the same after four years in development.

The third game in the Driver series gets off to a good start. A fantastic pre-rendered cut scene introduces the story in cinematic style, with names like Mickey Rourke and Michelle Rodriguez popping up amongst the opening credits. Once again, you take on the role of Tanner, a maverick undercover cop who infiltrates a worldwide car-theft-ring. Starting out in Miami, his home city, you'll eventually make your way to Nice and Istanbul. As the music plays on, accompanying the unfolding action, you really get the feeling that this is going to be one hell of a good game.
