Druuna: Morbus Gravis

I wish I could say something positive about Druuna , but it really is a poorly executed 3D adventure game. The interface is so convoluted, and the game play is so limited in its scope, that is just doesn't offer much of an experience. If you really want to view this woman's breasts, then I recommend you buy this game. But if you want an enjoyable adventure game, you should probably look elsewhere.

Heb je zin in een redelijk non-lineaire interactieve film, met een mooi mens en een stevige dosis surrealistische horror, dan zal Morbus Gravis je bevallen. De gameplay in de geheugenscènes, waarin je de meeste tijd zult spenderen, is echter zó beperkt dat je het op dat punt misschien beter bij Lara Croft kunt houden.

Overall, Druuna: Morbus Gravis is a game to avoid. Its puzzle elements are almost nonexistent, and its graphics are mediocre. If a developer can’t get either of those areas right, then it probably shouldn’t be making adventures at all. Yet, somehow Druuna is the highest selling game ever made in Italy (“by far” according to Artematica’s web site), and all I can wonder is why people are buying it, and how it could have gotten a publisher when a game like Simon the Sorcerer 3D can’t.

The first thing that everyone who looks at the DVD box will think is: “Oh, looks like Lara’s days are over.” Indeed, this Druuna girl has no guns, but the rest that she’s got is enough to get the interest of every man, minus the blind ones. And that’s exactly the purpose of the artist who invented her, Paolo Eleuteri Serpieri. I had never heard of this man before, but that tells more about my knowledge of modern adult book art then of Serpieri’s success. Although a search for him on the Internet gives only 24 web pages, less then a search for Testkees…

Druuna had the potential to be an extraordinary game as the atmosphere is very well done and the basic concepts are present. Lackluster gameplay only made worse by a poor navigational and menu system and a lack of setting customization is the biggest downturn of the game. Unless you are a diehard fan of the Druuna comics, you will not derive much entertainment out of Druuna. I really tried to enjoy the game, but simply too much was wrong to make it any fun at all.

En somme, si le pari d'adapter Druuna en jeu vidéo semblait ambitieux ( sans doute trop...) la réalisation qui s'en suit n'est malheureusement pas à la hauteur de l'oeuvre de Serpieri. La belle outre le fait qu'elle ne soit pas totalement dans son contexte habituel se trouve desservie par un gameplay raté et qui multiplie les handicaps pour finalement nous laisser un soft décevant à de nombreux niveaux.

Druuna ist eine junge Frau, hat eine phänomenale Oberweite und liegt im Koma. Woran das liegt, ist ein wenig unklar, aber so wie's ausschaut, hat die Gute etwas ganz Furchtbares erblickt und ist nun total gehirnalbern. Da kommen dann Sie ins Spiel, denn irgendwer muss sich schließlich in das Gehirn des Mädels hacken und mal nachgucken, wo sich die Kleine diesmal rumgetrieben hat - könnte ja wichtig gewesen sein. War's auch.

Die Comics von Druuna sind ja noch ganz nett, aber bei denen hätten die Jungs von Artematica auch bleiben sollen. So schön wie die Spielumsetzung von Fakk2 war - so schlecht ist Druuna. Die Steuerung sollte eigentlich wie bei Resident Evil werden, leider ist auch die total in die Hose gegangen. Auf 6 CD´s werden uns ganz nette Videosequenzen gezeigt, welche immer wieder zusammenhangslos mit vorgerenderten Bildern und 3D-Figuren unterbrochen werden. Hier wartet man dann vergebens auf Gegner, Story oder bedienbare Steuerung. Sehr unangenehm auch die deinstallation, die Möglichkeit dazu ist nämlich gar nicht vorhanden! Somit muss man sich selber darum kümmern dieses Spiel wieder von der Platte zu bekommen und das Verlangen danach stellt sich relativ schnell ein. Schade - man hätte vielleicht etwas ganz nettes draus machen können. Naja, wieder mal eine Comiclizenz sinnlos verschwendet!

There are a number of surefire ways to ruin an otherwise perfectly good game. Unfortunately for Druuna: Morbus Gravis, it features many of these design problems. The game is plagued by poor control, an unintuitive interface, time limits, ugly graphics, grating music, and one of the worst save-game systems ever devised. It not only makes all the wrong moves, but it also finds new and innovative ways to make them.

I looked forward to the release of this game. All the previews and PR teases suggested that we were about to get something astonishing: a game with the visual quality of Myst, the excitement and ease of control of Half Life and the intelligent opposition AI and fluid plot of Deus Ex. Life is full of disappointments. I am very sorry to say it, but unless you're a hardcore Druuna freak, avoid this game.

Drunna is a terrible adventure game, but it also fails to pay off to its most obvious target audience: fans of Sepieri's work and those who want something a bit more racy and adult in their gaming. Apologies go out to all the perverts out there, you're going to be disappointed too. Druuna is merely sexually suggestive and the only nudity takes place on a European beach and the brief sado-masochistic shots at the beginning of the game.

Anyone familiar with Greek mythology should know about the semi-human females that lured ancient mariners to destruction with their sweet song. While the actual existence of Sirens may be in doubt, the message remains the same: Even if it sounds (or looks) good, it may be a false front. This can be said of Druuna.

Der Untertitel des Adventures Druuna lautet "Morbus Gravis". Das heißt schlicht "Tödliche Krankheit". Der Name passt hervorragend, denn das Spiel ist zum Sterben schlecht.
