The only real problem I found with this game was the inconsistent difficulty level. Sometimes it's so easy it's boring, and sometimes it makes you want to bash your head against the keyboard. Overall, the two extremes balance out and it turns out to be a fun experience. It's one of my favorite platformers ever, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good time.

Both versions, the Genesis and Super Nintendo, are spectacular, but the Genesis version has an additional level (Intestine). Either way, if you're only planning to get one game this holiday season, make it Earthworm Jim.

As good as Global Gladiators, Cool Spot, and Aladdin were, David Perry and his crew reached even higher platform gaming heights with Earthworm Jim. No longer constrained by a license, they successfully blended the charm and beauty of these three games with the radical level design and techniques of Rare's extraordinary Battletoads. Their creation lived its own life, undisturbed by the imposing shadows of its predecessors.

Rest assured, you're not looking at another also-ran character in the action game category. Earthworm Jim carves (digs?!) out a niche for himself as a '90's Sonic or Mario. I'm gonna leave you with a bit of advice you never thought you'd run across in a video game magazine; be an early bird and get the worm!

This game rules and I think everyone should try it. It's got cool graphics, nice sound, lot's of levels and if the games to hard for you there's codes for it so don't give up. I happily give this game.

Once upon a time, there was a worm, and unbeknownst to our friend The Worm, intergalactic battles were taking place millions of miles directly above his wormy little head. A supersuit was the cause of the all the ruckus, and in the midst of the struggle, the suit was dropped, fell to the earth, and turned our friend, the everyday worm, into... (*swell of music*) . . . EARTHWORM JIM (EWJ).

This is definitely a game for anyone with a sick mind and an itchy gamepad finger. If any of you weirdos out there are searching for someone you can identify with, Jim is the worm for you.

So, yeah, Earthworm Jim is another in the endless stream of platform games, but it has what so many others lack: stunning graphics, incredible music, addictive gameplay and a great sense of humor. Hugely recommended. Believe the hype!

Earthworm Jim is ready to set the side-scrolling genre on it's ear...er, head! With great graphics, superb humor and imaginative gameplay, this cart will really worm it's way into you heart!

Console owners look out! The PC is quickly catching up to cause companies the like of Nintendo and Sega to be on their guard. "Earthworm Jim" the extremely popular game on the consoles has been converted to the PC.

What an unlikely hero to make such a big hit. This little worm is larger than life (sort of like Jim Carrey). Just the animations of the character alone are incredible enough for anyone to be drawn to it like a moth to a flame. But it doesn't stop there, the graphics and sounds complement the cool character. There are big levels with different types of scenes to keep you entertained. Simply put - this game is smokin'!

SNESElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Earthworm Jim is a totally unique character, with plenty of animations and unique characteristics, plus this game milks them for all they're worth (along with a few inside jokes). The levels are huge and extremely challenging with hilarious bosses and other assorted enemies. Only gripe: there could be a few more continues. Launch that cow!

WindowsPC Player (Denmark)

EWJ in portable form! What more could you possibly ask for?! Well, how about a portable version that is almost exactly like the console versions. Well pretty close anyway. The most notable lacking feature is the background graphics, there aren't any. Other than that, this game is a 5/8 scale down of it's big brothers. The only real problem is that the Game Gear only has two buttons meaning one button controls the whip and gun. Their solution is acceptable but not perfect. Still, an excellent choice for Game Gear owners.

WindowsWorld Village (Gamer's Zone)
So what's the final verdict? EWJ is a solid arcade game, adding a large chunk of humor and wackiness into a, at times, fiendishly difficult game. Its animations are well rendered, the sounds are great, and how can you not love an earthworm hero?

Even though it doesn't quite match the Genesis version for sheer quality, the SNES version of Earthworm Jim is still a damn fine platform game, with loads of challenges, great graphics, plenty of secrets and laughs a mundo. Bring on the sequel!

Game BoyGamePro
Despite the system's limitations, EWJ is still first-class. It's not easy, though, so be prepared for a fight. Fortunately, this is a fight worth taking on. Last year's classic 16-bit entertainment becomes this year's classic handheld fun.

Game Boy AdvanceGame Vortex
Earthworm Jim is a solid title. It's a good port of a good game to a handheld system, and while I wish that they had improved on the gameplay experience a little more, there's still quite a bit to enjoy in the game. While it won't appeal to everyone, and the controls could use some work, Earthworm Jim is an entertaining platformer that should make fans of the genre happy--and perhaps make a few old-school gamers smile and remember when they played the original on a big screen.

Game Boy AdvanceGamerDad
Jim remains one of the weirdest 2D side-scrolling games you'll ever play, mainly because of the sheer amount of innovation packed into each level. Jim will bounce on tire stacks, use zip lines, propel himself using machine gun fire and utter an emphatic "Dang" whenever struck by the enemy. Power-ups include special weapons and health, as well as free lives, which you'll need because Earthworm Jim is also one of the hardest games you'll find on the handheld. In terms of innovation and creativity, graphics and sound, Earthworm Jim is head, stomach and tail above most titles, but it does suffer more than most from the GameBoy Advance's well-documented lighting/screen problems. Since the enemies in Jim tend to be small and fast, they can be hard to see without a lit screen (so it's better on the new GBA SP). Regardless, this one remains a classic despite the intervening years.

I find this cart to be both frustrating and a blast to play. A postscript, folks: this game spawned a sequel aptly named Earthworm Jim 2, Not to mention a cartoon series on Kid’s WB. Where is it now? There was also a line of some pretty cool looking action figures that are collector’s items now!

I liked playing this game. If you have played any of the Earthworm Jim games, you will enjoy this one. If you have not played any of the previous games, this might be the perfect time to start. I would recommend this game to anyone who has played or ever wanted to play an Earthworm Jim game. There are some things lacking in the way the game was set up that bring its overall score down. If you don't want to play from the beginning every time, you will need to use cheat codes to play from your last stopping point. Ordinarily I do not like to recommend this type of play but the lack of savegames or passwords, which are popular in a lot of games nowadays, leave you with little other choice. The only other option is to get through on your exceptional talent. I for one am not that talented, so the cheat codes will have to do. This is a fun game -- not much new or unique, but true to the Earthworm Jim character.

All in all this is a very good translation of a good game. So, if you haven't already worn out all your Earthworm Jim fun on the original, then you should probably give this one a try.

Game Boy AdvanceGameSpot
For fans of the original Earthworm Jim games, this is a real treat that provides an exercise in nostalgia while still being legitimately fun. For first-timers, Jim introduces a whole new generation of gamers to his bizarre brand of off-kilter platforming action. Either way, Earthworm Jim proves two things; 2D platforming isn't dead, and it's OK to laugh.

Earthworm Jim is back as brilliant as before and even more frustrating. Dang!

The keyboard serves as a decent controller for this side-scrolling game, but to skillfully dodge and shoot the biggest bosses you'll want to play this one with a gamepad. The game is Windows 95 native, so it integrates smoothly into your desktop and there's no installation. Now all Activision has to do is convert the rest of my favorite SNES and Genesis games to PC, and I'll be completely content.

On the GBA, I’d say the difficulty has escalated threefold. If you’ve played the original, you know full well that this game was tricky enough to begin with. Furthermore, without additional material, why play it again? Especially if it’s going to kick your butt up and down each level.

But you might be better off looking for the sequel to show up instead of diving into Earthworm Jim's underground world with this first release. Earthworm Jim 2 is a more solid experience on the gameplay side of things, while retaining the positive visual aspects of this original -- this first Earthworm Jim is pretty and likely to stir up nostalgia for many, but just doesn't handle well enough to really be a fun game to play. Invest your 800 Wii Points with caution, because your memories of Earthworm Jim as a character and cartoon hero might be making you think this first game adventure was better than it is.

Overall, this portable Earthworm is fine for fans who want to take their EWJ show on the road. But the controls may just send you crawling back into the dirt.
70
Game Boy AdvanceIGN
Earthworm Jim made for a great character in a decent console adventure, and the Game Boy Advance version came out rather pretty well. The real problem is that a straight-forward conversion isn't portable friendly -- because there's no save game points in the GBA version, it feels like it's near impossible to accomplish anything in the adventure since it'll all go away when the batteries die or when you have to shut the system off. If Majesco grabs the rights to Earthworm Jim 2 (a much better game than the original), I hope that they'll consider at least a password system to give the kids a break.

And the game is challenging. Graphically, it does a nice job mirroring the cartoon in an arcade format. Though the game may lack game boards filling the screen with lush environmental graphics, it does have a few sight gags scattered about the levels. The sound is somewhat elementary, but does a nice job supporting the graphics. The controls are very easy to learn, allowing players to jump right into this wacky world.

Game Boy AdvanceGaming Target
The biggest disappointment of this game is the save feature, or lack there of. There is absolutely no way to save this game. While in the 8 and 16-bit era gamers were often sitting down for an hour or two to tear through a game, the handheld gaming time allowance is different. Rarely will people sit down and play GBA for a hour straight, add that to the fact that EWJ is a surprisingly difficult game and you can see why no save feature was a bad idea.

GenesisThe Video Game Critic
The bosses are interesting but some are far too difficult. The very first boss (which is really a sub-boss) is outrageously hard. But Earthworm Jim is more than platform jumping and shooting. In fact, the variety of challenges in this game are remarkable. In one stage you must guide an oblivious pup to safety, and another puts you in a bungee-jumping contest with a huge ball of snot. There are even 3D stages where you race through a space tube while avoiding asteroids. But where's the password feature? Having to start each game from the first stage is a travesty! The audio is a collection of eclectic tunes that perfectly match the game's unconventional tone, and the sound effects are top notch. Earthworm Jim is certainly one of a kind, though casual gamers may find it somewhat frustrating.

Game Boy AdvanceGame Informer Magazine
I can’t say anything very bad about Earthworm Jim, but I can’t really say anything good about it either. The graphics are about what I expect out of a GBA title now, the gameplay is mediocre, and the control is average. If I was really bored and had nothing else to do I might play EJ, but that would be about it.

Game GearElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
Earthworm Jim has finally gone portable for Sega and I'm sorry to say that it just doesn't cut it in the way it's 16-bit counterparts do. I will say, of course, that the graphics are pretty good, but that's about the extent of the brownie points I'm gonna give. On the other side of the coin, the play control isn't what it should be, namely because of the limit of only two buttons on the Game Gear. Maybe if the game were simplified just a tad. The game was a bit hard.
