"In 1940, a group of French teenagers discovered a hole that had opened in the earth among the roots of a dead tree. Rocks thrown into the hole sent back deep echoes. One particularly adventurous young man, Marcel Ravidat, later returned with a different group of friends to climb down the hole and follow the echoing sounds. To their astonishment, they came across colorful paintings of animals that covered the walls of the underground cavern."

"Ever wanted to live like a Caveman? Er, nor us. But that’s sort of what’s on offer in Secret of the Lost Cavern, a semi-educational Myst-style adventure set during the height of the Stone Age. Playing as a young lad named Arok, you find yourself setting out on a quest to master they mystic art of cave painting."

"In the world of adventure games, there's one big-name company left, a somewhat recent but aptly named company known as The Adventure Company - though also know as Dreamcatcher Games when they're not publishing adventure titles. I've come to appreciate new titles from them, because with rare exceptions, they're well thought out games that don't include a lot of the old varieties of pixel-hunting and instead focus on making fun puzzles and engaging stories, like reading an adventure novel."

ECHO is a rather short game with a substandard story and skin-deep characters. It represents, however, the Eden’s land of puzzles and it offers you a very good opportunity to experience how people lived 17.000 years ago. In conclusion, ECHO is a worthy game although I could not recommend it to everyone. Those of you who prefer story driven adventures will not find much of interest in this game. However, those of you who like adventures to be rich in puzzles, in quantity as well as in quality, will love this game and should not miss it.

Kheops Studio guides the player through a forgotten world, invoking magical realism, folklore and facts to create an adventure game that is both entertaining and educational.

"The biggest question adventure fans will have when considering “Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern” will be “how does it stand out from other adventure games such as the Myst Series?” Many games seem to completely copy the entire Myst premise but gamers will be happy to know that this isn't the case for this game."

"Echo is not going to set the world on fire. There are no fancy 3D graphics featuring pixel shaders. There are no Hollywood leads in the roles of the characters in the game. The story, though unusually set in the Paleolithic, is not spectacularly unexpected in the direction it takes."

"ECHO: Secrets of the Lost Cavern is a breath of fresh air in what was starting to become a stale and predictable line of adventure games."

Echo: Secret of the Lost Cavern is a challenging, though ultimately very rewarding adventure game that deserves kudos for its unique subject matter. Unless you're a world-renowned scientist or anthropologist, it doesn't look like you're going to get a look at the real Lascaux Caves any time soon, but hopefully this game will help to showcase at least some of the cave's magic.

Ultimately, Secrets of the Lost Cavern will appeal to fans of the point-and-click puzzle game genre, and it will likely really appeal to that small subset of fans who also love archeology and anthropology. As someone who takes an armchair interest in such things, I tended to find that part more interesting than the actual gameplay.

"You are Arok, a young Paleolithic hunter. While out trying to kill food for the clan, you are chased into a cave. Once in the cave, you are reminded of Klem a painter that visited your people when you were still small. You decide to find Klem and learn the art of painting."

"ECHO: Secrets of the Lost Cavern takes the standard problem-solving adventure and puts an interesting twist on things, but ultimately it doesn't stray very far from the standard problem-solver."

"Adventure games are, by and large, a dying breed, and the lamentations of this fact can be heard throughout the halls of gaming’s fandom. While stalwarts await a second coming of the genre courtesy of another epic production like Grim Fandango or Quest for Glory, we have to make do with recent efforts such as Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern."

"Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern is a decent adventure game, filled with a variety of puzzles set in prehistoric times. It's the only prehistoric premise that I'm aware of in this genre and although it doesn't exploit the theme to its full potential it's still unique and begs for numerous sequels to fully explore this premise."

"In the word's most common usage, an "echo" is a sound that repeats, becoming fainter and more distant until it is barely loud enough to be heard. There is often a connotation of solitude; a person alone, perhaps in a cave with no perceivable exit, calls out, desperate to find some hint of humanity nearby, and is answered by only the refrain of his own voice."

WindowsGameSpot
"When it comes down to it, your average adventure game usually boils down to either a murder mystery or some kind of Indiana Jones-style unraveling of ancient, arcane secrets. So the sole fact that Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern is basically about a young caveman learning how to paint sets it apart from the usual fare published by The Adventure Company."

All of this comes together in a manner that builds to a decent finish, but those seeking more than good puzzles may feel let down. The story never gets all that interesting, and the game is over a bit too quickly.
