While the arcade mode is highly entertaining and very challenging, the replay value takes a dip once you finish the game, and with unlimited continues, you might finish it in one sitting. Still, it's terrific fun while it lasts. There are some other modes like a two-player split screen mode and a "score challenge" mode, but these aren't nearly as exciting.

If you aren’t a fan of the arcade version and are new to 18 Wheeler, then I would definitely recommend this game as a rental. You may not want to spend $40 on 18 Wheeler, but you’ll be glad you rented it for $5. Versus mode is fun, and the game is enjoyable and challenging. A must buy for fans of the arcade version and a must rent for those who like a little vehicular mayhem.

While four levels were plenty for the quarter-munching arcade version of the game, they go by pretty fast at home; the four Score Attack courses and variable difficulty modes don't add much replay. So rent this gem first to see if you'll still want to play after beating it.

DreamcastIGN
In the end, what really kills 18 Wheeler is the lack of gameplay length. Once you learn where and when to slipstream behind certain trucks and what branching paths to take, there's really no point in playing the game anymore. 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker is a blast while it lasts, but when you're done, you won't find much more fun. 10-4 that, good buddy.

18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker might make a good rental game, but make sure you play it at a buddy's house before you buy.

While the Dreamcast controller simply cannot do justice to the wonderful arcade cabinet that is Eighteen Wheeler, the controls are fine. As far as graphics and sound are concerned, the game is a direct arcade port, which in this case, is both good and bad. I would've liked to have seen a second arcade mode added to this Dreamcast version, like there is in Crazy Taxi. It's just that the arcade part of this game, by far the game's best feature, is too short. All four tracks can be finished very quickly on the easy setting, and if the gamer is at all familiar with the arcade model, just as fast on the normal or hard settings. The sound is fine, however, though Lizard Tail's voice can be as annoying as that of 100 purple dinosaurs.

So here’s the deal. AM2 set out to deliver a direct port fresh from the leftovers of the back alley arcades, and they’ve succeeded. However, without any redeemable qualities for a long-term investment, 18 Wheeler is merely a short adventure that was ultimately always destined for the arcades only. Nevertheless, for a rental, you really can’t go wrong.

In no way do I want to suggest that 18 Wheeler is a game you should stay away from, but like the edge of the Grand Canyon, approach cautiously. It is NOT the home equivalent of the arcade version, but it's a reasonable substitute for people who want to bring a piece of the arcade home. As a fun rental, especially for a party game, it promises to delight a crowd and really impress your trucker friends. 'Hey, these gamer types are okay!' My neighbor has instructed me in the secret cabala of driving a truck in such a way as to approximate a veritable Highway Shao-Lin Style. The transmission of this style would no doubt thrill you, but some secrets are too precious to pass on. Play 18 Wheeler for yourself as a rental before you decide if the amount of play is enough to justify adding this one to your permanent collection.

Y'know, 18 Wheeler sells the sort of appeal that Capcom's Cannon Spike depended on entirely: an action-packed arcade experience that will be over in 20 minutes, yet leaves a little incentive to play a few more times. Some people love the concept (and generally also love Cannon Spike), while others can't help but wonder why the developers didn't put in an extra effort to give the home version a real purpose. Now, I won't say which side I'm on, but I will point out that unless you thoroughly enjoyed the full-sized version and wouldn't mind spending around 40 bucks for zero extra single player levels and the same 10-20 minutes of entertainment per play, save your cash for a more fulfilling title. Better luck next time, Sega.

Like teenage sex, it’s fun while it lasts, but it’s over way too quickly.

If you like the Dreamcast version of 18 Wheeler and you still have that system and a copy of the game, save a few bucks and buy something else.

DreamcastPlanet Dreamcast
It isn't that the game isn't solid and fun. It's just that most players will wonder why they didn't just stick a couple of bucks in the arcade machine instead. A little more time adding meaningful extras could have turned this into the kind of game that keeps on truckin', rather than one that stops at a roadside diner early on.

18 Wheeler would be easier to recommend as a budget title; with a price comparable to more lasting games, however, it's probably best left as a rental.

18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker on the PlayStation 2 looks a bit more polished than the Dreamcast version, but much like that game, it is too short to hold your interest for very long.

After several races you'll quickly grow tired of the redundant game play. There's a nice two player game, but even that feels limited, especially in this years gaming climate. In the end the game suffers from too few levels, no online play, and it's lack of depth. Pick it up after you've grown tired of both Crazy Taxis ... but only after that.

DreamcastAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Unless you’re a transport fanatic, it’d probably be best to put the pedal to the medal and blow by this smokey, good buddy. It’s a sad but true fact that Sega ported 18 Wheeler: American Pro Trucker directly from the arcade and only paused long enough to introduce a two-player head-to-head race along with a short and unsatisfying parking mini-game. As might be expected, the majority of the gameplay lies in the arcade mode, but its incredibly short duration and lack of replayability will make gamers wonder why this title wasn’t released as a budget item, when it obviously delivers a budgeted amount of content. As a rental, this would make for a great time, but it’s not exactly the most cost-efficient purchase you could make. Sure, the pretty graphics, crisp sound effects and fun-the-first-time gameplay might inspire you to pull over this trucker for an examination, but you may as well not bother: the trailer’s not even half full on this haul.

Unless it’s been your life long dream to drive an eighteen-wheeler, there isn’t much here worth your time. If you don’t believe me, at least rent the game before you buy it. I’ve even had a few other people play this game, and they all agreed that this game isn’t worth all your time or the full price.

The gameplay is somewhat engaging, though, as your travel the countryside with your freight. Amazingly, your semi can cover the continental US in about 10 minutes. Still, I'd rather just get out and walk.

Without trying to sound like Swiss Tony from The Fast Show, 18 Wheeler American Pro Trucker is a lot like making love to a beautiful woman. It's exciting, sometimes perilous, bouncy with a well-made chassis, but sadly over far too soon. The Dreamcast version just doesn't have enough meat in its sandwich (again, a lot like a beautiful woman).

PlayStation 2Gamezilla
From start to finish 18 Wheeler is disappointing. Poor quality graphics and a really short game length make this one worth a definite miss. If the graphics had been closer to matching the quality of the arcade version it would have been worth getting for fans, but even those who love the arcade version will want to skip the PlayStation 2 release. If you really want to play 18 Wheeler either hit the arcades or find the Dreamcast version of the game and find a cheap used Dreamcast -- you’ll enjoy it more.

If you're in the mood for a racing game on the PlayStation 2, American Pro Trucker isn't really the best of racing titles to choose from for a home console. But, if you have played and enjoyed the original in the arcades, and you do own a PlayStation 2, then you might find that owning the title will suit your fancy like it did once before. However, with very little replay value, and with very little initiative play value for even a first time through experiencing the game, 18-Wheeler: American Pro Trucker is better off as a rental title that should be passed by if you're looking to purchase a game without even glancing back on it once.

DreamcastGame Revolution
18 Wheeler may be a good simulation for diesels, but it's something of a letdown as a game. It's just too short and is not worth the 40 bucks. A rental at best.
50
GameCubeIGN
As an arcade game, this is a novelty, but a thoroughly satisfying one. But if you're considering paying $50 for an hour's worth of racing -- without the added benefit of the arcade cabinet, horn, and steering wheel, I might add -- the novelty factor quickly runs dry. Especially since this isn't even a particularly new arcade racer.
49
GameCubeGame Over Online
Considering the fact that 18-Wheeler only offers around 3 hours of game time, it should come as no surprise that I do not recommend this game outside of a one-night rental. Even then you’ll probably be bored with the game after only your first time through. After racing through five different locales and hearing countless taunts from the rival trucker, you’ll be more than ready to put this game away and not think about it again until 18-Wheeler is re-released on the PS3 in 2007.
49
GameCubeGame Chronicles
18-Wheeler American Pro Trucker is a fun game in a mindless sort of way. The gameplay and controls are super-easy, allowing you to dive right in and transport your loads across the country. Unfortunately, the trip across the USA is a short one, divided into a paltry five stages with each stage only taking minutes to complete. If you must play this game then rent it, or better yet, head to the nearest arcade where you can spend a few dollars and enjoy it in all its intended glory with the big wheel, horn, and bench seat.
46
GameCubeGameSpot
18 Wheeler, which was less than impressive on the Dreamcast, is even less so when presented on the technically superior GameCube.
42
GameCubeGaming Age
18-Wheeler American Pro Trucker is first and foremost an arcade game. Game companies need to realize that bringing certain arcade games onto consoles may have its benefits, and also consequences. Crazy Taxi made a successful transition because the developers decided to add more modes to increase the replay value of the game at home. Unfortunately, 18-Wheeler should have stayed at the arcades. The game at home offers nothing but a quick thrill, albeit a rather cheap one.
42
GameCubeThe Next Level
18 Wheeler is a game very reminiscent of a late Eighties, early Nineties arcade racer, only with much higher quality audio. The gameplay is simple, the graphics are bright and functional, and the fun factor is high while the game is in session. Once the ride is over, you may want another go, or you may not, but you will not be disappointed. If this were a snack it would be a 20-oz. soft drink - not too filling, it goes down well, but it is best accompanied by something else.

GameCubeGameswelt
40
GameCubeAll Game Guide
Without at least ten more routes in the main game, additional modes of play, bonus vehicles, or incentive to attain high scores other than for posterity, 18 Wheeler cannot be recommended for a purchase. The simple, straightforward nature of gameplay is over far too quickly and the appealing aspect of smashing into buildings and cars is largely neglected. In the end, this payload is too basic to keep players occupied for the long haul.
40
GameCubeNintendojo
I wouldn’t have a single qualm with this game if it were an exclusive rental in a Blockbuster promotion, but because it’s a full-price purchase, this is a different issue. The game is fun, but it just doesn’t last and its replay value is very, very limited. Combine those elements and you’ve got a sad situation. This is a great rental, though!
40
GameCubeGamePro (US)
GameCube owners deserve better than this unimproved port of an inferior Dreamcast game.
40
GameCubeVideo Game Generation
18-Wheeler is the type of game you beat once and then never touch again, and the Parking mode adds very little much-needed variety. The key problem here is not with the quality of the product; it's with how much of it is offered. If they had given us 20+ stages, this would've been a decent purchase. As it stands, it's recommended only for those obsessed with big rigs or if you find it really cheap on eBay.
40
DreamcastGamekult
40
GameCubeGamesFirst!
Look, it's a competitive market out there, even on the Gamecube, and there's not a lot to recommend about American Pro Trucker. It's too short to justify a purchase even if you're crazy about driving games, and there are more appealing games for rent-The Simpsons Road Rage and Crazy Taxi offer a similar arcade driving experience of significantly higher quality, and that's where I'd put my money first.
40
GameCubeNintendoWorldReport
Here we have another port where there’s simply not enough to do, even for a rental, let alone a purchase. The game does have its moments, and it always slightly more fun with another body, but there’s no reason for anyone to own this one unless there’s someone out there who needs to own every single GameCube game. You should try to play it, but don’t rent it unless you’ve got a rent one-get one free coupon around, because you’re better off plunking about $3 worth of quarters into the actual arcade unit rather than having had to pay for this disc to waste space in your GameCube for 5 days.

A game should provide hours of entertainment, not minutes. 18 Wheeler may entertain younger gamers for a short while, but serious gamers should avoid 18 Wheeler like truckers avoid exercise.
40
PlayStation 2Computer and Video Games (CVG)
Only rednecks, road hogs, and mental midgets will find excitement in 18 Wheeler. Plodding along in a truck that feels like it's barely moving isn't CVG's idea of fun, and with only four short levels, 18 Wheeler is a bulky blunder. Okay, it looks fantastic, the characters are funky, there's loads going on and the concept of smashing up highways with a view to delivering your cargo in time is sound. But the gameplay is full of holes. The routes on each level are painfully linear, the challenges undynamic and the replay value is almost non-existent. Even multiplayer is a chore.
40
DreamcastDigital Press - Classic Video Games
There are only four stages at four to six minutes a piece, so it does not take too long to master the game. There's little replay value once mastered, beyond the general arcade desire of bettering scores. Overall, there are better racers and better arcade ports out there for the Dreamcast, recommended only for short play.
30
PlayStation 2Computer and Video Games (CVG)
Some arcade games make for great home conversions – Sega's Crazy Taxi being an obvious example – but 18 Wheeler should have stayed as a coin-op curio, because the home version is a scandalous embarrassment.

DreamcastGame Critics
18-Wheeler fails to understand that and delivers a game that feels false. I understand that releasing a suitable steering wheel controller for the game was unlikely and reinventing the game mechanics from the arcade version is unrealistic, so I question why Sega even bothered to release 18-Wheeler with all its inadequacies to begin with.

To sum things up, the developers tried to implement the same kind of fast paced and frantic action that Crazy Taxi rode to success in 18-Wheeler. The problem is that driving a truck isnt the same hyper-kinetic experience as driving a taxi. Driving a truck has more to do with control and pacing.
