So what can you learn from this semi-rant? If you had any question about getting this enormous expansion, my suggestion is do it. You shouldn't need any other reason, in fact, you should not even bother with reading reviews on it. It is Elder Scrolls after all and the only thing than can go wrong with them is: buying any book that takes away the experience. It is blasphemy. Now, stop reading and start downloading. And - don't let anyone tell you what happens!

The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles is an experience that shouldn't be missed by anybody. Elder Scrolls fans will appreciate the shout outs to Morrowind that await you around every corner (there's even a store called The Missing Pauldron, a joke only fans of Morrowind and Oblivion will get), and Shivering Isles not only lives up to but actually surpasses Oblivion in many respects. It has everything that made the original so fantastic and then some. Depending on how you play, you'll be in the Isles for a good thirty hours and I recommend milking that for all you can. Find all the hidden treasure, complete all the side quests, explore every dungeon and cavern; exhaust it completely and fall in love with it again, because you don't find a game as enjoyable and refreshing as this very often.

There really isn't much else to say. As most would expect, Shivering Isles kicks several different kinds of ass. The map is just as filled with sidequests and random encounters as the main game's map, and here you have the added bonus of the comedy that can only come from serious mental illness. The people who inhabit The Realm of Madness are flat-out nuts, and in quite a startling variety of ways. This injects some much-needed (albeit dark) humor into the game, which is a mostly serious affair in Cyrodiil. And let's face it... Oblivion's world is HUGE. The possibilities presented by a second map, even one that's a quarter the size of the original, are too numerous to count. Shivering Isles is exactly what Oblivion fans have been waiting for and is an absolute must-buy when it's released for the Xbox 360 and PC on March 27.

Coming in at $30, Shivering Isles offers a lot of value for fans of Oblivion, and is more than enough of a reason to dust off your old copy and put it back in your 360. It certainly doesn't revolutionize anything, as most of Oblivion's quirks are still present, but the madness motif works very well, and goes a long way towards supplanting that soulless robotic feeling that originally pervaded the game. It's much easier to believe that NPCs are crazy than it is to project onto them human emotions. Despite being utterly mad, the world of Shivering Isles is strangely compelling, and is as worthy of your attention as any other full-priced release. Elder Scrolls fans would be crazy not to give this one a look.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles is one of the more expensive pieces of downloadable content available on Live ($30), begging the question – is it worth the price? For anyone who has already sunk more hours than they care to count into Oblivion, the answer is a resounding yes. For half the price of a retail Xbox 360 game you are getting a much deeper, and longer lasting experience with a game that has already proven its worth.

With content like this, it?s no wonder that Oblivion is one of the best games of all time and continues to get better. If you?re a fan of Elder Scrolls IV, you HAVE to get this game.

Buy it, play it, love it – I did. And if you loved Oblivion you'll love exploring The Shivering Isles. Just one little tip: if you want that last achievement make sure you save your game just before you decide a matter of rather large importance (hint: it involves you becoming quite high up in rank for either dementia or mania).

That’s fantastic stuff. The Shivering Isles may not have as many side quests of that caliber, but the Elder Scrolls has always been a slow-moving revolution. Each game and each expansion is always just better than their last mind-blowing accomplishment, and here, the camera work and scene integration is the new star. As always, can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store next.

So, is The Shivering Isles worth the 2400 Microsoft points that you’ll need in order to download it. In a word: yes! It’ll keep you busy for hours on end, and it offers an experience that’s unique to the Oblivion universe. Actually, that’s not totally true. When walking around the trippy forests of Mania, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the “Painted Troll” quest from the main game, one of the quests that just about everyone remembers fondly. When all is said and done, I’d say that The Shivering Isles will be thought of in the same way.

Do you really want to stop Order's inevitable march on the realm of Madness? I would suggest that the answer be a resounding 'Yes!' Shivering Isles is an excellent addition to the Oblivion world, and it isn't just a small set of quests or a building that you can use during your travels. It is a fully realized realm for you to adventure in, with a story all of its own. For a 1 gigabyte download, this is well worth the space. Since Oblivion has no online or group play for me to travel with you...I strongly suggest you take a trip yourself and come tell me about it. I'd like to know someday if you chose Dementia or Mania. Will the taint of madness touch you? I know it did for me, and I'll keep going back...

Shivering Isles is like Oblivion unleashed and on some kind of psychedelic steroid. While the gameplay remains the same, the artists and level designers kicked things up quite a few notches. Although the price tag may seem high at first (2400 MS points), the fact that this game is bigger (in every sense of the word) than most other titles currently available on the 360, makes it hard to ignore just how much value the Shivering Isles has. When I look up at the pink/purple crusted, star-ridden night’s sky of the Realm of Madness, I can’t help but be surprised at just how refreshing the game is even though I racked up over 48hours in the original. The unfamiliar mushroom trees, giant waterfalls, and unforeseen dangers that await me, only prove that the current Elder Scrolls IV fiction still has a lot to offer gamers. I can only hope that the next expansion is just as good.

Estimate game time within the isles weighs in at a meaty 30 hours, making this somewhat of a bargain. Furthermore, the smaller play area - a quarter the size of Oblivion - makes things a more focused affair, with the inhabitants, all of whom are consumed by madness, proving endlessly entertaining. The offbeat styling reminds us of Morrowind - and thus makes this a very compelling package, not only adding content to Oblivion but making it feel substantially different. Go buy/download!

Our point is made, right? Whether randomly exploring, grabbing side missions or working out the main quest, which involves saving the islands from being destroyed by a being called Jyggalag and his army of machine-like Knights of Order, this is just the shot of creative energy this game needs. We do wish it was cheaper, and heaven help us, why on Earth did the developers recruit the same handful of voice actors? This is a different country - people could and should sound different. But ultimately, this 15-30 hours of gameplay is a must-play for anyone, even if you didn't finish the main game.

The Shivering Isles is the perfect expansion; it gives you the chance to be good and become Sheogorath's Champion but also lets you be periodically evil, killing and torturing, you can even be the Oblivion version of Frankenstein and create you own monster. The land is as strange as its creator but beautiful in its own way. Indeed, Cyrodiil looks almost pedestrian in comparison. While it's a shame that this expansion is the first and last, Oblivion's swansong was well worth the wait and fans of The Elder Scrolls will not be disappointed.

Those are largely quibbles, though. They are issues, but if you're an RPG fan you're definitely going to get your money's worth here. If you're not an RPG fan, consider watching someone who is play through the game just to see some of the psychedelic and beautiful things Bethesda has made. Although Oblivion's playability hasn't been improved, Shivering Isles storytelling and artistry simply soar beyond anything else the Elder Scrolls team has done. The focus on one storyline wouldn't be enough to carry a full Elder Scrolls title, but this is a superlative effort for an expansion.

One hope I did have for SI that was not fulfilled was that of a new musical score. SI simply carries over the same music its players have grown used to in Oblivion. I feel that this is a fault because SI is such a new, imaginative world that I believe it should have its own unique, imaginative music. Fortunately, however, this was really the only criticism I had of Bethesda's expansion. Some very minor issues could use some tweaking, but they aren't significant enough to warrant description here. But I will say that if I could make my own addition to the game, I'd throw in exotic mounts for players to ride, like the insect creatures in Mania or Dementia's large, undead wolves. But that's just me. I was impressed with the expansion for the most part and I look forward to whatever material Bethesda releases next.

As far as gameplay goes, Bethesda has delivered in just about every way. In fact, I think they've improved what Oblivion had to offer. In SI, players will enjoy a much higher degree of control over the world in which they adventure. Throughout the main quest, which is entertaining and immersive, players will face a significantly greater amount of personal choice than they did in Oblivion; choices that will have substantial and permanent effects on the game world.

The Shivering Isles expansion for Oblivion was everything I expected, and a little more. This expansion into the land of the mad shows us Bethesda’s dark side which sparks more creativity within the plot, characters, and design. Stepping through that portal near Bravil will reignite your passion of Oblivion, and remind you why you’ve loved the game originally. If you’re a fan of Oblivion, Shivering Isles has enough content that is worth the price of the download.

This expansion is a must-have, plain and simple. A gamer on a budget could wait a bit for the price to come down before buying this addition to the game, as exhausting all possible adventures in Oblivion can take a year of real time, but anyone ready for some different-flavored action won’t be disappointed by this worthy addition to the Elder Scrolls series.

Vergessen Sie den Lückenfüller Knights of the Nine.

$30 may seem a bit steep for an expansion pack, but Shivering Isles more than makes up for the cost with amazing content, a weird new world to explore and some of the craziest characters ever seen in a role-playing game. If you loved Oblivion then there's no excuse not to pick up this massive expansion pack.

The Shivering Isles is, by far, one of the best of The Elder Scrolls IV expansions and another reason you’ll be spending even more time exploring this massive world. While it is pricey, the new world you get to explore adds more RPG gaming goodness and enough quests to make this yet another juicy chapter in this already lengthy epic.

While the 2400 MS point price is a bit on the high side, the content manages to provide more swashbuckling, looting and questing for those who couldn’t get enough from the retail release.

Even if you feel that you’ve played so much Oblivion that the game has become stale and samey, you might be surprised at how much Shivering Isles reignites your enthusiasm to play it. It certainly won’t give you a reason to play through the original game again, but everything that was good about that is equally good here and even after a year Oblivion compares extremely favourable to any other game, on both the PC and the Xbox 360. Undoubtedly the expansion is better value on the PC, and you don’t have to worry about logging into Xbox Live in order just to play it, but both packages still represent good value at a solid 20-40 hours of additional gameplay.

It will take you a good 20 hours to complete the major quest line, but there's plenty more to do afterward. With all the side quests to complete and territory to explore, you could easily spend 30 or 40 hours or more losing your mind in Shivering Isles. You'll find that your time with Shivering Isles is well spent. The quests, characters, and world in Shivering Isles are all as creative and intriguing as in the rest of the game. There are many reasons why you should pick up The Shivering Isles expansion of Oblivion. New creatures, quests, ingredients, armor, weapons, spells, and even achievements are just some of the reasons why. The quests are just not nearly as memorable however and you will more than likely blow through the main storyline in a dozen hours. That is just the outer core however, for a $30/2400 MS point price tag; The Shivering Isles is a welcomed addition to avid players and fans alike. I know that you will not be disappointed.

Shivering Isles is one of those few expansion packs that truly adds a lot of value to an already excellent game, instead of trying to make some quick money without too much effort. The developers at Bethesda have managed to create a whole new game world with its own memorable characters that feel notably different from those in Cyrodiil, without breaking the brilliant game mechanics and balance of Oblivion. Whilst the expansion pack may not feel as epic, and the side quests may be a bit lacklustre, fans of the original game definitely won't be disappointed; a shame that the ID bug was not caught before release though.

Shivering Isles for the PS3 is an excellent expansion to the main game and one that will have you loving every minute of this new setting. The Shivering Isles is a truly awesome expansion to an already addictive game. It's certainly a great reason to re-visit the world of the Elder Scrolls and won't disappoint fans of Oblivion. With new weapons, enemies, spells, environments, quests, and a story that makes the Knights of the Nine seem like child's play, the Shivering Isles really delivers on the promise of a great expansion pack. It would have been nice if Bethesda had added a bit more value for the money, but trust me when I say this is no horse armour download. While it's certainly not a perfect expansion, it is most certainly worth your time and money.

This isn’t a completely unconditional purchase. If your own Oblivion adventure has long since come to a close, and you would need an entirely fresh approach to make the trip back again, then Shivering Isles probably isn’t worth the time. The revolutionary gameplay Bethesda develops with every new Elder Scrolls instalment is still here in fine form, but Oblivion was such a long game in itself some players may have reached their personal limit of appreciation. However, there needn’t be any hesitation to burn those points if you're still yearning for some more medieval madness, because the Shivering Isles adds even more incredible gameplay to an already stunning RPG formula.

The unique setting and duality of madness that Shivering Isles possesses provides an excellent backdrop for more Elder Scrolls adventuring. With more of just about everything, Oblivion's first expansion provides the player with over thirty hours of new content. For fans of the series, that's a wonderful proposition, and one they should experience. For everyone else, that's thirty more hours of Oblivion's nagging issues, and they might just come out of the portal to the Isles slightly less sane than before.

Despite the gatekeeper glitch, and a few tolerable crashes at transitioning points, Elder Scrolls IV – Shivering Isles is certainly money well spent. Characters are well developed and the main storyline is interesting. This expansion pack will easily bring around thirty to forty hours of additional game-play to the base Oblivion game. If you enjoyed Oblivion, you won’t want to pass up Elder Scrolls IV – Shivering Isles.

As an expansion pack, Elder Scrolls IV: Shivering Isles never feels like it’s going out of the way to impress, and that’s because it’s not. Still, because the underlying formula behind the Elder Scrolls series is so irresistibly fun, we can’t help but love the game. We wish there were more side quests and we can’t help but wonder why Bethesda took our horse away. What’s more, the game has some flaws it inherits from Oblivion, such as its less-than-amazing combat system. But some minor quibbles aside, this is a great 20-plus-hour adventure. You can’t help but get lost in its immersive and imaginative design. If you loved Oblivion – we know we did – then you’ll definitely like Shivering Isles. It’s more of the same, but who says that’s a bad thing?

The Shivering Isles is an entirely worthy addition to Bethesda's stellar fourth entry in The Elder Scrolls series. It respects a player's ability to make decisions, offers some useful armor sets and weapons, delivers a vivid, more imaginative variation of the traditional high fantasy province of Cyrodiil, and will reinvigorate that addictive itch for exploration inspired by Oblivion. If you've weaned yourself off the Elder Scrolls IV since its release, this expansion is a great excuse to jump back in, if only to experience Sheogorath's bizarre tangential meanderings.

Bethesda Softworks wisely followed the “if it ain’t broke” axiom and left much of the core gameplay unchanged, opting instead to toss on oodles of new content and leaving no stone unturned as to how to make the game that much better. Even for 2400 points, Shivering Isles is a worthy candidate of your hard earned cash, adding dozens of hours of fresh gameplay to a game that we’re sure you already invested far too much time into.

You get your money’s worth out of Shivering Isles, even at $30; however the game does use 10% of your available hard drive space on the original 360. You can spend a nice amount of time (more than a weekend, in between eating) enjoying the area and you’ll always be occupied doing something. If you can get over the price, the expansion is an easy sell really due to the unique setting that is completely unlike old Tamriel– the quests make for a more well-rounded main character, making it great for people just starting out as well as seasoned players.

Falling somewhere between the Morrowind expansions Bloodmoon and Tribunal quality-wise (with the former being the most memorable expansion pack I’ve played in any game), Shivering Isles is a worthy, but somewhat lacking, addition to the Oblivion experience. It’s still well worth the $30 of course, just not up to the series’ usual brilliance.

Even with this in mind, The Shivering Isles is a delight for any fan of the Elder Scrolls series, embodying all of the things that make the franchise great: lovely worlds to explore; fearsome monsters to defeat, interesting people to talk to (and sometimes kill) and, of course, a compelling, if occasionally disturbing, story.

If you played the original to near death, then forgot about it, Shivering Isles is the perfect stepping stone back into what's essentially an incredibly involving adventure game. Never played Oblivion before? Then the original will keep you going for quite some time before you can make your mind up about bolting 30+ hours onto the side of it. And if you're a hardcore Elder Scrolls geek, then you've probably discovered all the secrets Shivering Isles has to offer already. In which case why have you just read this?

Only available as a download on Xbox Live, Shivering Isles will run you about $30, along with a copy of Oblivion required to play it. By finishing the main questline, which shouldn’t take you long, you can nab an extra 250 achievement points on top of Oblivion’s 1000 already in place. From there, it’s up to you on what you do next; there are plenty of side quests to be had, along with plenty of unexplored land to be discovered. With this packed content, and whatever time you may have already spent in Oblivion, Shivering Isles makes for a great value all around, taking what was once a seemingly never-ending world and making it bigger and better.

That's his loss. Given free range to vent their most outrageous, vivid, degenerate, and depraved fantasies on an unsuspecting player, Bethesda's developers have crafted a unique world that shares the same quality of writing and attention to detail as Oblivion itself. Appropriately enough, only the most insane Oblivion addicts could refuse such an opportunity.

The first full-fledged expansion for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion takes you on a trip to a skewed and psychotic Oz, full of odd people, new magic and killer creatures. And chances are you’ll love it there.

What you end up with is a fresh and imaginative new realm to explore - one replete with strange NPCs and even stranger enemies - and, let the cheers of the gamerscore hungry resound, new achievements to unlock. The scope of this package is impressive, and while Sheogorath's main quest can be completed in a modest amount of time, those getting the most out of Shivering Isles will be more than happy to stop and smell the roses, read the books, and complete the side-quests for a truly robust experience.

Well, almost. Aside from one nasty fight, the new content’s a bit too easy. (If you’re looking for a challenge, it’s probably best to create a new character.) The add-on is really more about dialogue and politics than unbridled brawling, which might not be for everyone. And there’s not enough high-level kit to be found, either.

Shivering Isles retails for $29.99, and it adds several hours of game play. Although the creatures are tougher, I was expecting a bit more of a challenge. With that said, I recommend this expansion for Oblivion fans. Like the original game, Shivering Isles is intended for mature gamers.

While the cost of the parent game is still a little pricey at about $60, the Shivering Isles expansion pack, that lasts about as long as a standard WHOLE game, only runs about $30, and you don’t have to worry about damaging a disk as it downloads directly to your hard drive. The blend of combat, NPC interaction and the ability to wander, complete side quests or rush into the main storyline make a journey to the isles well worth the trip.

The only real problem with this expansion is finding the time to play it. Oblivion is big enough without adding large chunks on top of it and you’ll easily drop 50 hours into the game before you’ve even finished the main storyline quest. The game is designed in a fiendish way that makes you happen across side-quests, no matter what you do. Even if you try to avoid getting sidetracked, eventually, you find yourself in some far flung dungeon looking for a fabled item of ages past.

Whether you've enjoyed Oblivion on the 360 or the PC it goes without saying that you'll enjoy what Shivering Isles has to offer. There's plenty of content here and the surroundings are quite different from Tamriel which is refreshing. The additional treasures, weapons and armour you can obtain are certainly enough to make fans of Oblivion want to have this expansion. Of course it's a little disappointing that the core experience hasn't changed at all but when the original game was so impressive, it's not that much of a disappointment. All things considered, Shivering Isles is a worthy expansion.

OK, so Shivering Isles doesn't reinvent the fireball. But the impeccable design and construction of the original game breathes life into this expansion -- not, as you might assume, the other way around. If you're looking for more to do in (or an excuse to return to) the vibrant world of Oblivion, Sheogorath's kooky kingdom is well worth the $30 entry fee.

In the end, Shivering Isles kind of comes pre-sold to fans of Oblivion. If you enjoyed the original game, Shivering Isles is more of what made you fall in love with it in the first place. Its original problems are still there, but they're more than made up for by the amount of fun to be had in the main quest line. In its current state, the expansion is already fun enough to justify the $30 purchase, and, like the original, we're sure it's only going to get better as time goes by.

And so to the conclusion. I can't see anyone who enjoyed Oblivion enough to get through the main quest not buying this. There's lashings of new fighting and exploring, and it's more gorgeous than ever before. But maybe it was just the artist's turn to smoke the hookah of inspiration. There were plenty of people for whom the easily-broken game mechanics and problematic levelling system of Oblivion was too tortuous to contend with. This expansion does nothing to fix any problems these folk might have had - it's just the same game as it ever was, only this time with a slightly weirder backdrop, and less interesting questing.

Meanwhile, The Shivering Isles is a little bit too right in the head. We expected to have our sanity challenged by talking dogs and barking women, not game breaking, data corrupting bugs. Still, those of you without corrupted save files might consider a trip to the land of madness – it is a strange and bemusing place, and at least it’s more Oblivion. I just can’t figure out what the developers were thinking when they let ship a broken game. Were they insane?
